My Top 10 Years In Gaming

Over the years I have created top 10 lists for my favorite games on most of the systems I own. Then I did a best of the best list, and a top 10 developer/publisher list. Now, I am going to take a look at all the games that made those lists release years, and see which years happened to produce my favorite games the most often, so I can find out my top 10 favorite years in gaming!

Okay, so as predicted, this one is like the development list, and there is a whole lot of ties, so that there is actually only 9 rankings. So every year that produced some of my favorite games will be honored in this list…at least for now!

#9

There are two years that tied for ninth, with one game from each year.

1989

1990

#8

Three years tied for the number eight spot with two games from each of these years.

2015

1999

1987

#7

A four-way tie here, three games from these years.

2006

1988

2014

#6

There’s another four-way tie for the number six spot, four games from each.

2008

1991

1998

1993

#5

Another five years tie for the five spot, with five games from each year. Triple fives baby!

1992

1996

2004

2001

2003

#4

Pulling back a bit with a slightly smaller four-way tie here, six games from each.

2007

2010

1995

2009

#3

Only three years tied for this one, seven games each.

2012

1994

1997

#2

In the big leagues now! No tie here! Just one year managed to represent eight great games!

2000

Go millennium!

#1

We don’t have a clear winner here. In fact, four years tie up for the number one spot with 9 games from each year!

2013

2011

2002

2005

That’s all for now. Maybe one day this list will become more clear cut.

Rambo Series Ranked/Rambo: Last Blood Review

I never thought in my life that a new Rambo movie would come out. The third one released about a year before I was born, so for a very long time, I thought that was it. I remember always thinking, ‘I wish they would make five, so that they could be even with the Rocky series.’

In 2008, the impossible happened. A fourth one came out, along with it, the possibility of another sequel, but eventually it tapered off, Stallone basically saying he was too old for a fifth. And then one day, nearly 11 years after the fourth one came out, my brother informed me that he was indeed making the film, and showed me some set photos.

I was floored. It seems in less than a week, I will get my wish at long last. Five movies to match Rocky, even though thankfully that series has increased in number as well. But I am not  going to wait for a sixth one, for that just isn’t ever going to happen. I am satisfied completely with the fifth one. The trailer alone makes me confident this movie is going to be intense and incredible. I just watched it again, and it gave me chills

So to celebrate this monumental occasion, I will be ranking all the movies from my least favorite to my most favorite.

So away we go!!

#4 Rambo

rambo

This movie is incredibly moving and emotional, due to the fact that it very accurately portrays war in third world countries and the cruelty of humanity. Each weapons effects on human bodies is realistic and brutal, which really brings into light how horrible war is and why Rambo tries his best to get away from it.

While I find the movie to be utterly fantastic, it also has a bit of disappointing parts in it. I wasn’t thrilled that Rambo wasn’t doing pretty much everything on his own, despite the fact that I really like all the mercenaries he works with.

I also don’t like that there isn’t any cool stealth kill parts like they have in the first three. That is definitely missed.

The final thing that bugs me is that during the finale scene, Rambo just sits behind a machine gun mounted on a truck the whole time, which is cool, because he shreds up all kinds of stuff, but it is also boring in a way.

#3 Rambo III

rambo 3

This movie is a masterpiece. It’s got intense action throughout most of the movie, and even has Colonel Trautman doing a bit of fighting, which is something many people have wanted to see I’m sure. While Rambo does receive a bit of help in this one, it really just focuses on him, and actually the help hinders him at times.

Rambo faces his most vicious and largest enemies yet, fearlessly taking on an entire army that culminates into the best finale in the series. He drives a tank into a helicopter for God’s sake. This move is the epitome of 80’s action.

#2 Rambo: First Blood Part II

Rambo-First-Blood-Part-II-Soundtrack-2CD

If the third one is a masterpiece, this  is just a little bit more so. The action, the hate, the betrayal, the message… Everything about it is amazing. And when Rambo starts to fall for someone, she dies immediately, as if the movie is punishing itself for daring to be anything other than awesome. The “Murdock, I’m coming to get you,” scene is one of the most badass scenes in history.

#1 First Blood

rambo first blood

This one is just slightly more of a masterpiece than 2 & 3. The whole calm, sad Rambo being pushed to take on a whole town theme is amazing. How he takes down every cop in the woods, incredible. Showing off his survival skills in said woods and in the mine is fun to watch.

I really like that a lot of the movie is just music and not a whole lot of talking goes on. Trautman’s ridiculous warnings to Teasle really hype up Rambo’s deadly skills. Just every second of this film is either tense, action packed, or awesome in some shape or form.

As a whole, this series is one of the best out there, despite it’s ridiculously inconsistent titling. I could watch these every day, they simply blow me away like all the stuff Rambo blows up in his life. I am completely confident that the fifth will be able to stand among these four incredible films. I already like it better than the fourth one just from watching the trailers!

Last Blood Review

The movie is pretty darn incredible. I’m just going to go right out and say it. It shows Rambo in a new light, a brighter one, if you will. One where he is actually content with life, which is something we have never seen before. And then by the end of the movie, we have never seen him so angry. For now, he’s not fighting in someone else’s war. This time, it’s just personal…and it’s awesome.

The first 2/3 of the movie is more like a super violent Taken, and then the last third is just everything you love about Rambo to the extreme. The ending is mind blowing. If you like hardcore action, then this will float your boat, I’m sure. If you are someone who doesn’t like unnecessary violence, well then don’t watch this.

The music is great as well. They take all the themes from the other movies and adjust them to the mood of the scenes going on, so that it actually reminded me a lot of the Rocky series, and actually succeeds in enhancing the emotions being felt or the themes being represented in each scene.

Interestingly enough, being as Rambo is a quiet, hardly talking maniac of death and destruction, this is probably one of Stallone’s best performances. The emotion he gives off, the hate, the rage, the hurt…all excellent. You can practically see an aura of rage floating around him like he is a Super Saiyan by the end. Again, this really enhances the viewing.

Some parts of it are a little slow, but that’s because they are plot building, and I was itching to see Rambo go nuts. And he does. Believe me. It’s worth the wait.

They never describe how Rambo is actually related to the girl who refers to him as “Uncle John,” nor how she is related to the other woman who lives with them. This isn’t really a big deal, but the viewer is pretty much left to assume a whole lot about them, but overall, it’s not really important. The movie makes this clear. All you need to know is the young girl, Gabriella, is like a daughter to Rambo. And this Gabriella has the most beautiful, big brown eyes that kind of make your heart melt. This is fortunate, because she does a lot of crying, and those eyes just make it so much sadder, on top of her being adorable and crying is something you never want to see her do.

As for ranking this…I don’t know…I really don’t. It’s definitely better than 4, but I can’t really say where it falls among the first 3. Sometimes it’s my favorite, sometimes I like it less than 3 or equally as 3. I would just consider it a masterpiece like the first 3.

Watching this made me realize how different all 5 films are. Each brings your attention to a different real world problem, and never really holds your hand doing it. They never hold back from the violence that exists in this world, showing you the cruelty of humanity, something Rambo tries to separate from himself and protect others from. This is a constant theme in the entire series, Last Blood being no exception. And with the advancements in technology, the fourth and fifth film are especially effective in showing how destructive people and weapons can be.

So what I have learned is that the Rambo series doesn’t need to be ranked. They are all so entertaining, educate you in a brutal way, and have an interesting, tortured soul he turns into a volcano of fury and then murders everyone in his way as the lead role. And a credit to this film, there is a slight 80’s action movie feel to this film at times, which is a nice throw back to Rambo’s roots.

Bottom line, if you love Rambo, you are going to love this. If you like action movies, you will like this. If you are expecting a movie with a deep twisting plot, involved, fleshed out characters, and a deep sense of meaning that will leave you feeling like a better person…then you clearly have never seen a Rambo movie before. These films have always been about awareness of global issues and intense action entertainment. And this one delivers on that.

P.S.

It’s better the second viewing.

Top 10 Worst Eminem Songs

In my opinion, Eminem is by far the greatest rapper to ever live. I’m just going to say that flat out. If you disagree with that, okay. Makes no difference to me.

But nobody is perfect. While 99% of Eminem’s songs are good to incredible, he has slipped up a few times over the years. So I thought it would be fun to compile a top 10 list putting a spot light on his 10 worst songs (in my opinion).

-Okay, it was actually hard to find 10 bad songs, so I have to stretch it a little bit.

#10

“On Fire”- Recovery, 2010

This song isn’t bad at all. I actually like it. I just don’t really like the chorus that much, and compared to the rest of Recovery, this song jumps out as the worse by far.

#9

“Jimmy Crack Corn”- The Re-Up, 2006

Again, this isn’t a bad song whatsoever, I just don’t love the rhythm he raps with in the first verse, even though it is reminiscent of the actual Jimmy Crack Corn song. And it has 50 Cent on it, and I absolutely hate him, so that doesn’t help. The chorus is a tad annoying too, but nothing that really hurts the song.

#8

“Yellow Brick Road”- Encore, 2004

Yet again, this isn’t a bad song. It’s just kind of boring. He tells a story about his origins at a slow pace with an unexciting beat under it. This is all fine, it’s not one of his best, and again, it was hard to find actual bad songs.

#7

“Maxine”- Infinite, 1996

I expect you’re tired of hearing this, but this is not a bad song either. The issue is that half the song is a phone call with Maxine, who is a prostitute basically, and you can barely hear anything she says. And I guess just rapping about a whore isn’t great source material to me. But yeah, it’s still a decent song.

#6

“Ass Like That”- Encore, 2004

This song isn’t horrible either, it’s just okay. And weird. It has some indian beat, and he raps with a slight indian accent or something. The lyrics are kind of all over the place as well.

#5

“Untouchable”- Revival, 2017

This song borders on being bad. It just has not a lot going for it. I don’t really like the beat, the chorus is maybe okay. But the main body just sounds messy at times, especially at the end of the song. It’s also weird that he talks in the perspective of a black guy, which makes it difficult to take the song seriously.

#4

“Nice Guy”- Kamikaze, 2018

I don’t know what he was thinking with this song. The song features Jessie Reyez more than Eminem, and she has the worst voice I’ve ever heard. It is scratching on a chalk board in human form. She is a terrible person and should never sing again.

But anywho, it’s a very short song, and half of it seems to be intentionally weird and bad, which makes it almost forgivable. It’s pretty obvious they didn’t take the song seriously or put a whole lot of effort into. So basically, they should have just cut it, cuz intentionally bad is still bad.

#3

“Mosh”- Encore, 2004

This has a slow, marching beat to it. So like Yellow Brick Road, this is a very boring song. And Em gets all political, complaining about war and whatever, which doesn’t really suit him. On top of that, the song isn’t catchy at all, there isn’t any great rhymes. It’s just…ugh…

These next two…these are really the only two songs I can truly say are absolute terrible.

#2

“Rain Man”- Encore, 2004

What was he thinking with this one? This song is just stupid. It’s like he wrote half a song, went into the booth and just muttered a bunch of stuff in between to make a full song. It’s just 5 minutes of bad. But it does have one of his most offensive lines of all time in it, which is both hilarious and really mean.

#1

“Big Weenie”- Encore, 2004

This song makes Rain Man look good. That’s how bad it is. I have no idea what he was trying to accomplish with this one. It has no purpose, there is no message. He just says random things,  the rhymes aren’t great, the beat is slow and boring. There’s nothing redeeming about this song at all.

There you have it. I probably would have been better off doing a top 5 worst songs, since I like most of the ones on this list, but oh well. 5-10 bad songs over a 20+ year career is a pretty good record, I’d say.

My Top 10 Developers/Publishers

Over the past few years I have made top 10 lists for my favorite games on most of the consoles I own. I have recently ranked the #1 games from each list against each other to decided the best of the best.

But now it is time to pick the 10 publishers/developers that most often appeared in those top 10 lists, #1 being the company that most often made it.

I can tell you my top three developers by personal opinion right now, but I won’t. I am curious to see if those three make the list and in what position.

So here we go, the 10 most recurring companies that made games that are on my top 10 lists!

Okay…So there was a LOT of ties, but here goes…

#10 There’s A Handful

Not nearly as many as the number 10’s though. These next companies made it into the top 10 lists twice.

PlatinumGames

Ubisoft Montpellier

Sucker Punch

Square EA

Raven Software

Camelot Software Planning

Game Freak

There ya go, not too bad.

#9 A Few Here Too

The next companies appeared three times in my top 10 lists. This is where the companies really start to shine in my eyes.

Ubisoft

Konami

SCE Santa Monica

Blizzard Entertainment

#8 Another Handful Here

These next companies appeared an impressive four times on my lists!

Namco Bandai (or Bandai Namco)

Retro Studios

SquareSoft

Alphadream Corportation

Inti Creates

#7 A Few Here As Well

The next companies appeared 5 times on the list. Now we are starting to see the cream of the crop!!

LucasArts

Square Enix

Sonic Team

#6 Intelligent Systems

There’s just this one! The great development team behind Paper Mario is the only company to appear 6 times!

#5 There’s Only Two Here!

These two companies showed up seven times with amazing games!

HAL Labs

Sony Computer Entertainment America

#4 Rare Ltd.

Woo! One more company stands alone! Rare has made the top 10 lists eight times!

#3 Sega

The guys behind Sonic and a few other amazing titles make the number 3 spot, due to appearing a whopping 10 times on my lists! As it would so happen, I actually consider them my third favorite developer!

#2 Capcom

The company that brought us Mega Man and Resident Evil has appeared 19 times in my lists! Wowsers!! They would actually be about my fourth favorite developer in my personal opinion, but clearly they deliver more of my favorite games than any other company except…

#1 Nintendo

These guys are absolutely my favorite developers. Practically every game they have ever made has been incredible, and the ones that aren’t are just plain good. This company has destroyed the rest, taking a massive 82 spots on my lists! They are indeed my favorite video game company!

That’s all folks!

I always update these lists if new games make the top 10’s, which really doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I will update this list as well, which has the potential to change this entire thing drastically. Who knows what the future will hold? If this list does change, that just means I have discovered some truly incredible new games!!
