Games That Most People Love, But I Don’t

I thought it would be interesting to see just how many games I don’t like that most of the world quite adore. This is nothing fancy, just a running list I was inspired to write by the very rare times I’ve bought games simply because everyone was raving about them. Of these times I’ve done so, I wound up not really seeing what all the fuss was about half the time. So let’s take a look and see how much I disagree with the world…

 

Going to start out with an old classic…

  • Tetris: It’s a fun game overall but it gets pretty boring really fast. Hardly anything amazing outside of 1985.
  • Every basic racing and sports game. Series like Need for Speed, FIFA, Madden, Gran Turismo, F-Zero. They are all fun for a bit, but get old fast, which I guess is why they releaseĀ  some every year.

 

  • Halo Series. I remember playing the first one when it came out and thinking it was the worst fps I ever played. I’ve only played the first 3 and was equally unimpressed with them all.

 

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: I really tried to like this game, but it got boring real fast. But admittedly, it isn’t really my cup of tea. It’s the only game I’ve played in the series and the only one I intend to.

 

  • Shantae: Risky’s Revenge: This is one of the games I bought simply from constantly reading how everyone found it to be absolutely incredible. Yeah, well..it’s not. It’s just an okay platformer. It is the only one in the series I have played and I’ve no interest to go beyond that.

 

  • Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat/SoulCalibur Series: These are games I really tried to like, but I just don’t like fighting games, so I guess that’s on me.

 

  • Speaking of fighting games…Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: I thought this was the coolest game ever when I first played it, but it got old real fast. Again, I don’t like fighting games, but this one did it a tad better than most, but still…meh.

 

  • Animal Crossing Series: I’ve only tried two games and got unbelievably bored within a few hours. I guess I hate sim games, like the Sims. That crap is boring. Why would I want to live a basic life in a game? I have enough with my own real life.

 

  • Assassin’s Creed Series: I’ve played everyone up to 3, and only liked Brotherhood and Revelations. The rest are horribly boring and stupid and poorly executed in my opinion. And the two I do like, it’s not a strong like, just like an “okay, that was good enough” kind of deal. Plus the ending credits in each game are enough to make you want to kill yourself.

 

  • Call of Duty Series: This is a weird one. I actually enjoy all the games very much. But I play the campaigns only, whereas virtually everyone but me and two others I know of play for the online play, which to me is when the series started to decline heavily. The games under the “2” title are some of my favorite fps’ ever made, cuz that was before all that online hooplah and they actually put real effort into the games.

 

  • Elite Beat Agents (DS): While this isn’t like a huge game to most people, everyone who has played it claims it’s so amazing. I don’t know, I got like 3-5 missions in and found it to be just so very boring.

 

  • Grand Theft Auto Series: The series is good for mindless slaughtering of innocent people for a half hour, but the actual games, like the campaign and all the meat, is just rather long and boring.

 

  • Star Fox Series: I actually like all of these games but not to the extreme level that most people do. And I find Star Fox 64, probably the most popular one, to be okay at best and one of the worst in the series.

 

  • The World Ends With You (DS): The only reason I bought this game was because I heard some of the characters were going to appear in Kingdom Hearts 3D. And with this game being called the best game on DS by pretty much everyone, I thought “what could go wrong?” Well, the idea is cool, but I thought the gameplay was rather terrible and the game seemed to never end.

 

  • Final Fantasy Series: I do like most of the games, and some I don’t like I find okay. Others I despise. But most of them are just miserable to get through regardless of whether I like them or not, often being littered with unbelievably annoying factors and dumb development decisions. The series as a whole is one of the most overrated things I’ve ever heard of. 7 is not nearly as good as people make it out to be either, though I do enjoy it.

 

  • Super Mario Bros (NES): People always talk about this to be one of the greatest games of all time. Sure in the sense that it is responsible for kickstarting everything we play today and all that, but that is entirely different from how the game plays. Yes, when it first came out, it was jaw dropping. But today, it’s crap. I like the game, but it’s still crap and definitely one of the worst in the Mario series.

 

  • Going along with that is Super Mario 64: Again, this game is more famous for being revolutionary. I remember being blown away by the 3D graphics and seeing Mario’s world in all new dimensions, but then I was disappointed by the gameplay and the game itself and I found myself missing 2D suddenly. Again, I like this game, but it’s nothing spectacular.

 

  • Donkey Kong 64: Like SM64, this just made me wish they made another 2D instead. By the time this came out, the 3D wasn’t exciting anymore, so it didn’t even have that going for it. It’s a good enough game however.

 

  • BioShock: I don’t know about this one. I played it for like 3 hours and then stopped. I loved the commercials when the game came out and was excited to play it, but I just found it to be a boring mess. I have no interest to play the others either.

 

  • Borderlands Series: I’ve only played the first two, and actually I had no interest in buying them, but my two brothers wanted me to play it, claiming the second one is one of the best games ever, and so they bought them for me, and I wished they just saved their money. The first one is just barely playable, and the second is just barely okay. They are more annoying and monotonous than fun, and though the games have great humor, I am to miserable playing them to actually be amused.

 

  • Tomb Raider Series: I haven’t played the rebooted ones, but the original games are just okay at best. Kind of boring, but it’s not a horrible struggle to beat them, and they do get better as they go on, so that’s something.

 

  • Going along with that is the Uncharted Series: This is difficult. I haven’t played the PS4 entries, and I loved 2, but 1 and 3, and thus the series as a whole is rather underwhelming, especially since it’s considered one of Sony’s flagship franchises. And the fact that it is a shameless ripoff of Tomb Raider doesn’t help it either, but it’s done way better than those games, so I guess it balances out.

 

  • Overlord Series: I get a lot of flak for despising this series. I’ve played the first two and find them to be awful. The gameplay is bad as well as the controls. It’s just a mess and no fun at all.

 

  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Series: Out of all the games I’ve played in this series, only Vegas 2 did I truly enjoy. The others are just unbalanced, horrible messes that depend too much on AI and the gamer understanding what the heck is going on. Maybe they are just too complicated for someone like myself, who does not have the patience to learn anything like this.

 

  • Crash Bandicoot Series: I really loved these games when they first came out, but now they are just okay. Definitely not worth getting the recent remaster of the trilogy.

 

  • Xenogears: This game is okay at times, but I really hated it most of the time. Everything is so slow moving, way too much boring talking for half hour+ times, the story is told in an odd way with a lot of build up and a disappointing ending. The end boss is ridiculous and requires far too much grinding and money to be able to beat him well enough, and by that time, you come to the conclusion it really isn’t worth it because you realized the game stopped being fun 10 hours into it.

 

  • Devil May Cry 1-3: These games aren’t bad at all, but don’t live up to the hype they get. They are good, but nothing at all spectacular, though I suppose they might have been when they first came out.

 

  • Jak and Daxter Series: Boy, I really am hating on Naughty Dog. I enjoy all three games, but none of them are truly wonderful. The first is my favorite, but the direction they went after that just wasn’t all that much fun.

 

  • LittleBigPlanet Series: I thought the first game was incredible when I first played it, but then I realized that it doesn’t cater all that well to single player. You need to play online or local multiplayer to really get the full experience and that is just something I have no interest in doing. They are undoubtedly creative games, but aren’t super fun or anything.

My Top 10 DS Games

A while back I listed my top 10 3DS games, so now I’m going to back up and give some love to its predecessor. I bought my DS very late in its lifespan. In fact, to my great annoyance, they announced the 3DS a few months after I bought it. So I don’t have all that many games for it, butĀ  I still managed to nab 41 games for the handheld system, but only played 26 of them. The rest I will get to some day. So of those 26 I have played, which are my 10 favorite? I will also be listing the developer and year they were made.

While this is one of my least favorite Zelda games, it is still pretty fun. It makes good use of the touch/dual screen capabilities, which makes for some unique gameplay.

When they announced that for the first time in over a decade, Mario was going back to the side scrolling formula, I nearly crapped my pants. Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World are two of my all time favorite games, and are much better than the two 3D Mario games that were out at the time. I was never more excited for a game at that point in my life. Until they announced the title. I very much dislike the title, and when I finally played the game, I was severely disappointed. I was expecting a sequel to Super Mario World, but instead got a major regression of the series, so that it is merely a vastly updated version of the original Super Mario Bros. Despite my disappointment, it is still quite a solid platformer.

Well, well, well, here is an instance where Sonic beats his ultimate rival. I first played this in the prime of bad 3D Sonic games, and I hadn’t played a handheld Sonic since the Gamegear, so I didn’t really know what to expect. But what I found was quite a pleasant surprise. This is a great platformer that really takes advantage of what made the Genesis games so fun, while giving them major updates.

This really put a spin on the Kirby franchise, utilizing the DS’ capabilities in clever ways to deliver a brand new adventure for the lil’ pink puffball, and it worked very well.

To anyone who wanted to see Mario and Luigi team up with their newborn selves outside of a sports team or racing track finally got their wish with this game, and it did not disappoint. Hilarious storyline, fantastic and creative gameplay using both generations of brothers, it’s all here and it is wonderful.

The handheld games in this series are always trying out unique forms of gameplay and this one was no exception. It isn’t the best game in the series…far from it, but it is a really fun game nonetheless with a unique leveling system (if you can call it that) and it was the first game to actually advance the story past Kingdom Hearts II, which was the latest game, storywise, for half a decade.

Okay, okay, so this is technically two games, but since they are nearly the same game, I put them together.This duo is a remake of Gold and Silver, the first sequels in the Pokemon franchise. They also happened to be the last two games I played in the series, though I never owned them. I quickly lost interest in Pokemon after only owning and loving Red/Blue. I felt the series should have stayed with just 150 Pokemon and stopped following it soon after Gold and Silver came out. But then I decided, like 20 years later, to get back into it, and what a better place to start then with these two games? And boy was I glad I did!

These games are just like the Red and Blue versions I cherished so much…except better. More Pokemon are better, I soon found out. I love catching them all, and have put around 300-400 hours into both games collectively, catching all the Pokemon available to me, which is much more than the original Gold and Silver, since they added hundreds of Pokemon from the games that came out between the originals and these remakes. Because of these two, I am a Pokemon fan once more!

This game took the same mechanics and formula as Phantom Hourglass and managed to produce an immensely better game. Everything about it was so fun, especially riding around in a train. I very much enjoyed the story as well.

This turned the series into a mission based game, where you play as Sora’s Nobody, Roxas, carrying out missions for Organization XIII. It actually works pretty well for the setting and incredible storyline. It doesn’t advance the series at all, but instead bridges quite a few gaps, seeing as the game starts soon after Sora becomes a heartless in the first game, continues on during Chain of Memories and finally ends right when you wake up as Roxas in Kingdom Hearts II, thus finally answering that “wtf is going on?” question we all had the first time we played the second game. The game is also really, really fun, so thumbs up to that!

Ironically, this is the first game I played on my DS, so I guess it was all downhill after that. This game is just amazing. It is so creative, so entertaining, so unique, so unbelievably fun, that it completely destroys every other game on this list. Not only is this my favorite DS game, but it is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s that good.

Final Fantasy VI: One of the Greatest Games of All Time?

Continuing on with my marathon of Final Fantasy, I have just beaten number 6 and thought it also worthy to comment on.

For most of my life, I have heard that this is one of the best games of all time, and most people claim this one or Final Fantasy VII as the best in the series. Sure enough, if you look at best games of all time lists, FFVI will likely be at least in the top 20, and for best SNES game lists (as Final Fantasy 3), it will be in the top 5, if not the top 3.

So, you would think I would go into this game with incredibly high expectations. But don’t worry, I treated this like most any movie or game I play…meaning I went in with no expectations…well if anything, they were probably a little low judging by what I think of all the games prior.

What I found was that I was right in not expecting much. The game is mediocre, like the rest of them, and I certainly wouldn’t put it anywhere near “best games of anything.” And yeah, VII is way better. And VII isn’t even my favorite.

But that is not to say that this game was bad though. It was just okay. First let me mention what the game does well.

All the games prior to this one followed a basic format. Walk around on the world map, go to towns, then to some dungeon or cave or castle, fight stuff and kill something or find something, rinse and repeat. While this game does that as well, it doesn’t feel like it. All the environments are very varied and fun to traverse through. The environments just look great and don’t give the game a boring, repetitive feel like some of the others did. In terms of scenery and setting, yes this game is by far the best out of the first 6 games.

They also relaxed a bit on random encounters, making it bearable to walk around in this game. This is a huge plus for me. And what’s more, they even let up on the unbelievably annoying, and seemingly constant status effects. So, in other words, the gameplay is the best I’ve seen so far as well, well except for maybe FF4.

Honestly, through most of the game, it is pretty fun and a solid game overall. I like how the story dictated what characters you could use about half of the time, instead of just picking four of the 14 possible characters and just using them throughout the entire game like a lot of RPG’s do. The story itself started out interesting, but then it just kind of stopped halfway through the game and turned out to be not so great.

I like how every character could learn any spell by equipping the summons. That was a nice touch.

The best addition to this game is the fact that you keep all your experience if you die. You will start at the last time you saved like all the other games, but this time you kept all that hard earned experience, making it easier to ensure you aren’t always underleveled.

So yeah, not a terrible game. But here is what kind of ruined it for me. Instead of having annoying status effects all the time, this game loved putting in enemies that would counterattack after you killed them. This became quite annoying, as these counters were generally very strong. There is even one part where you only have one character in your party, and when you kill a certain enemy, it countered by casting a spell that turns you into stone. In other words, that’s an instant game over. That is just cheap and/or horrible game design! You shouldn’t be able to find yourself in that kind of situation! And towards the end of the game there are enemies that when killed, instantly kill one of your party members. Why? You just wind up running from them, because you typically fight two of them along with another enemy. It is not worth using the items or magic it cost to revive two characters that are guaranteed to die. This should not be in the game. It doesn’t bring any challenge to the game, it is just an annoying, cheap, unfair way of inconveniencing the player. But you can’t have a Final Fantasy game without those factors involved, it seems!

 

And speaking of death after battle, there is a spell that puts a timer on one of your characters, usually about 30 seconds. When it drops to 0, that person is dead. But you would think that when you defeated all the enemies in that battle that the counter would stop. But no, it doesn’t. After killing the enemies, the amount of gold, experience and any items you get all show up one at a time, and that counter is still going, so if you take too long to read your rewards or if the counter is very low at the end of the battle, you can count on having to revive the character after the battle.

Another issue with this game is the frame rate during battles. It just randomly slows down badly, often messing up my timing and so many times I’ve used the wrong attack or targeted the wrong thing because the game was too busy sucking to register my button inputs.

But all that is tolerable. What really killed me was the end of the game. As a child, in every RPG, I would switch out all the characters and level them all equally, only to find that towards the end, I was horribly underleveled and had to grind four characters to make them adequate enough to beat the game. So after falling into this trap a whole lot of times, I learned to just pick four characters from the get go, and things got a whole lot easier. It turns out, for FF6, I would have been better off playing this game as a child. For the last area of the game, without any warning or chance to back out and prepare, you have to choose 12 of the 14 characters and split them up into three groups. Most of the characters were within 5 levels of each other thanks to the story having you always using different characters, but most of the time I used the same 4, who were much, much, much stronger than the rest. So now I had to divide them up to carry my weaker members. But I didn’t know this was going to happen, so everyone had crappy gear, didn’t know many useful spells, and were slightly underleveled. I also never got a chance to buy a bunch of items to keep me alive.

So what did I have to do? I had to unequip all the characters I wasn’t using and equip the group I was using with the best possible stuff I had. Thank goodness I never sold any equipment, for some members were stuck with old crappy weapons, but this was better than having none at all.

To make matters worse, the strength of your enemies seemed to have tripled. These fights would have been easy with my A-Team, but now they were downright difficult. The game doesn’t give you enough magic points to use any offensive spells, you had to save it all for healing, and I barely had enough to do that. My saving grace throughout the whole game were 3 items that allowed you to equip two weapons and double attack on each round. So yeah, I beat the entire game more or less just using physical attacks. It was cool.

But anyway, after dying a bunch of times, they eventually all grew a few levels thanks to keeping your XP when you die. Once I finally reached the end of one section, I had to unequip all my weapons, armor, relics and summons, so that they would be available for the next group, then painstakingly equip it all on them. So I just kept moving on, fighting a bunch of bosses with my three underleveled/undergeared groups and somehow managed to eventually beat it. I progressed through the game fairly quickly and easily, but I was in the last area for around 4 hours before I conquered it. The worst part is there is a long boring scene before the last boss that you can’t skip. The first time I fought him, I didn’t know what I was doing, because all your characters might have to fight him, so I ended up fighting him with all completely unequipped characters and died immediately. Then I had to watch the long boring scene again, and lose to the boss again. After the second failure, I understood what was going on, and after once again watching the long boring scene, I went all out and beat him. By the end of it, I was sick of the game.

But they had one more great surprise for me at the end. A long…oh my God, how long…boring…seemingly never ending scene. I kid you not, between the ending and the credits, its over 20 minutes long. The credits are terrible even! Instead of the traditional scrolling text, they opted to just show an airship floating around through clouds while occasionally showing a name or two at time. I mean, it is so uninteresting AND SO F-ING LONGGGGG!

And the game suddenly becomes obsessed with this woman you never even see in the game having a baby. Like towards the end, you go into this town you’ve been to a couple times before, and she’s all the people can talk about all of a sudden. Who is she and why should I care? She isn’t important to the story. She doesn’t do anything useful at all. And then when you beat the game, like 3 minutes of the ending scene is dedicated to this woman. Who is she? Is it just supposed to be some weird happy ending, symbolizing that things live on and grow in the aftermath of chaos? It’s just stupid.

So the game is pretty good until the last dungeon. That is the point I am trying to make I suppose.
