Super Smash Bros- Reactions to All Characters

The Super Smash Bros series has been around for over 20 years now. The idea of this was something gamers back then only ever dreamed of, or didn’t even bother to dream of because it just seemed so outrageous that we were certain it would never happen.

But one day, Nintendo gave us a game that put video games’ biggest stars in the same arena and let you battle each other. The novelty of this idea has still not worn off on me, and each time I play it, I still have that feeling like I’m playing it for the first time (which is something to be said, since I’ve probably put a good few thousand hours between all the games).

This might be because each game boasts an ever-growing roster of fighters, the latest entry, Ultimate completely destroying all previous games when it comes to content.

Every time a new character is revealed, the internet seems to go into a frenzy, mainly because they don’t like the character, or feels they aren’t deservant enough, and that someone else would have filled that spot better. Or people are ecstatic about the new character. Originally, the game’s roster was only reserved for Nintendo characters, but it has since grown to include many fighters from third-party companies such as Capcom and Sega, so that now Super Smash Bros is a celebration of video game history, not just Nintendo’s history.

So to honor this wonderful franchise, and to throw my hat into the online brawl of opinions, I am going to list a quick reaction of each character in the series. The reaction will obviously be from the game they debuted in.

And for the record, I love every single character, and I don’t care who they put in the game, for a new character is a new character, and that excites me, regardless of who it is.

1. Mario: (SSB)

mario-ssb

“Well of course he’d be the first choice.”

2. Donkey Kong (SSB)

“Great choice.”

3. Link (SSB)

“Weird that they went with adult Link, since he’s been a kid in like all his games.”

4. Samus (SSB)

“Well, I guess this is the closest thing we’re going to get to a ‘Metroid 64.'”

5. Yoshi (SSB)

“How in the world is he going to fight on his own? …Oh that’s how. I love it!”

6. Kirby (SSB)

7. Fox (SSB)

“So that’s what he looks like outside of an Arwing. I wonder how he fights?”

8. Pikachu (SSB)

pikachu ssb

“Holy crap, they put a Game Boy character into this game? Why would they do that? But it’s awesome to see what he looks like in 3D!”

9. Luigi (SSB)

luigi ssb

“I mean, he has to be in it, but why does he have the same moves as Mario? Then again, he doesn’t exactly do anything differently in his games.”

10. Ness (SSB)

“Who is that? He’s from what?”

11. Captain Falcon (SSB)

13. Peach (Melee)

31. Solid Snake (Brawl)

snake_070921j3-l

“Oh my God! A third-party character. The possibilities now are huge! But Snake? He seems so out of place. But after playing him, I have faith they can now make any character work in this series.”

32. Ike (Brawl)

“A nice replacement for Roy. At least I know what Fire Emblem is now, even if I don’t know the character.”

33/34/35. Pokemon Trainer-Squirtle/Ivysaur/Charizard (Brawl)

83. ARMS Rep (Ultimate)

arms smash

“YES! I was hoping one would have been in it already, but better late than never!”

And there you have it. After the ARMS rep, there will still be five more characters added to the roster, and I suppose I will add my reactions as well.

As I said, of all these characters, I enjoy playing as every single one of them, so I don’t really care who they put in, whether I know how they are or not, because I know they will do a good job on them. That’s not to say I don’t have my own hopefuls, which I talk about in this post.

What were some of your most memorable reactions, especially when the first game came out?

Kingdom Hearts III DLC: Ranking the 13 Limit Cut Bosses

The second chapter of the KH3 DLC is the “Limit Cut Episode,” one of the most difficult challenges in KH history.

In this episode, Riku is tasked with looking for Sora, so with the help of the Final Fantasy gang, they create data versions of Sora and the 13 darkness’, which thanks to Cid’s cynicality, are extremely murderous machines of pain and vengeance. (This isn’t 100% how it happens).

Thanks to these brutal bosses, I was forced to level to 99 (I was only 47) and get the Ultima Keyblade, two things I’ve never done before in any KH games. Once these two things are accomplished, only then can you stand a chance against such brutal bosses.

Fighting them at first seems like a grueling, unthinkable task, but as each boss falls beneath your keyblade, you feel an enormous sense of accomplishment, and then realize how expertly crafted each of them is.

At first, most of the bosses seem like an impossible entity that will slaughter you in seconds with their insanely over-the-top attacks and combos.

But as you continue the fight, you start to learn patterns and when they are vulnerable, and when to stay the heck away from them. So eventually, they seem not only beatable, but almost easy in a way!

I found myself slightly out of breath after each fight, for they are that intense, and I swear I had to morph my mind into a heightened sense of awareness to compete against these guys, which helped me defeat these tough cookies.

So for fun, I am going to rank them in order from easiest to hardest, in my opinion.

Note that I was playing this on Proud Mode…

XIII

Riku Replica

Dark_Riku_Limitcut_Kingdom_Hearts_III_Re_Mind

This one has some awesome attacks, but he is almost always open to attack himself. I beat him on my first try without any strategy at all, and didn’t even have to use a Kupo Coin. So he’s pretty darn easy, compared to the others.

XII

Vanitas

vanitas

Very similar to his fight in Birth by Sleep, this one seemed kind of familiar, except he’s harder here. He managed to kill me once, but that was because I was shocked at how easy he was and got a little reckless.

What makes him easy is most of his attacks or easily avoided, and he leaves himself open a lot, making him easy to wear down quickly.

XI

Larxene

larxene

This is the only other one beside Riku Replica that I beat on my first try, except I had to use my Kupo Coin. She has a lot of intense attacks, but being aggressive without forgetting to dodge and block every so often will net you an easy victory.

X

Marluxia

marluxia

His trick is a timer that will kill you if you don’t wear him down fast enough. Otherwise, he’s not too tough, and took me only two tries to beat, and that was probably because I didn’t know what the timer would do if it ran out, and may or may not have been a little curious.

IX

Xemnas

xemnas

He can be pretty intense, but there’s nothing that hung me up on him. I beat him in two or three tries, easily enough when I learned his attacks.

VIII

Ansem

ansem

He’s got some vicious attacks, but isn’t all that bad either once you get acclimated to him. He took me three tries to beat.

VII

Young Xehanort

young xehanort

I had a really hard time with him, but that is probably because he was the first one I fought, and wasn’t used to how intense these fights would be. He killed me a good many times before I realized there are actually patterns and strategies involved to be able to take these guys down.

VI

Xehanort

xehanort

For being the last boss, he isn’t too bad. I mean, he’s a beast, but after getting accustomed to his attacks, I found they are sort of easy to avoid and counter. He took me three tries.

V

Saix

saix

These last five bosses are the most intense, unholy devils of the universe. Saix took me probably around four tries, if not more. His berserk is a relentless waiting/dodging game of death, and patience isn’t my strong suit, which is why I struggled against him so much.

IV

Xigbar

xigbar

This guy is a beast. He keeps you at bay with his long range attacks, making this more of a defensive fight, waiting for those few opportune moments to get close and attack, again, which isn’t my style. He took me around six tries to beat.

III

Terra-Xehanort

terra xehanort

This lad has some truly vicious combos and attacks, many that are unblockable until the end of the onslaught, making dodging and then blocking at the right moments essential for victory. He’s a brutal dude who can kill you quickly if you’re not careful. He took me four tries to beat.

II

Luxord

luxord

This guy frustrated the heck out of me. He’s not hard really, but figuring out his little games certainly is, and then getting lucky enough to find him among the cards is always a chore. But once you figure out each of his attacks and develop a strategy, he’s kind of a pushover. Unfortunately that probably took me over 10 tries to figure out.

I

Xion

xion

This one is unlocked with Xehanort after beating the first 11, and she is a relentless bitch.

The first time I fought her, I got her down to one bar of health. Then she proceeded to murder me like 12 times. I gave up and beat her the next day on my first try.

Her attacks are very vicious, and getting hit by one of them opens you up to get hit by a ton more. Specific timing is required to block and counter her attacks, and you have a very short window to hit her.

She constantly gives herself armor too, which prevents you from harming her main health, and she can lower your max health down to nothing so you die in one hit. She’s definitely the toughest in my book.

So there you go. Playing through them is rough, and I don’t think I had much fun, until after I beat them. Then I realized how well-designed the fights were and how accomplished I felt, which made it all worth it.

My Top 10 Wii U Games

Ahh…the Wii U, one of my favorite consoles of all time, and yet woefully ignored by consumers and developers alike. Some of the best games I have ever played are out on this console, and it’s hard to pick 10, but I did my best. Of the 88 games I own for the console, I have only played 71 of them. But here are the best of those ones…

Update 11/11/19- Added new game to list, knocking Mario Kart 8 out off list

rayman legends

Rayman Legends

Ubisoft Montpellier/ Ubisoft

2013

This is one of the best platformers I have ever played. Excellent level design, fast paced action, andjust a whole array of weird stuff going on. Tons of unlockable skins for different characters to play as, satisfying challenge. It’s just great all around.

#9

yoshis wooly world

Yoshi’s Wooly World

Good-Feel/ Nintendo

2015

Speaking of great platformers, this is another one. The yarn or wool world looks incredible and it’s fun how you interact with it. Finding a ton of collectables in each stage kept me playing for hours. There are so many different Yoshis to explore the incredibly clever and fun levels with and fight  the wacky bosses that fill the world.

The Wonderful 101

PlatinumGames/ Nintendo

2013

This game sadly seemed to go completely under the radar. I feel like there was no advertising at all. And this is a travesty, for it is a truly unique and excellent action game with great humor and gameplay, in the spirit of Viewitful Joe.

#7

Paper Mario-Color-Splash

Paper Mario: Color Splash

Intelligent Systems/ Nintendo

2016

Within minutes, I got that classic Paper Mario feeling. There’s something about this series that makes me feel all happy and at peace. I don’t know what it is.

This one follows more closely to the Sticker Star formula, but also manages to be completely unique compared to the rest of the series. In fact, it’s more like a 3D platformer with RPG elements.

It is probably one of the funniest games I have ever played. The story and characters are highly entertaining.

Overall, I’d peg this as the third best in the series, after the first two.

#6

smash bros 4

Super Smash Bros For Wii U

Bandai-Namco Games/ Nintendo

2014

Aside from having the coolest cover art of all time, this game comes with some truly great additions in levels and especially characters. A lot of characters got changes made to them too which is nice. There is plenty to do in this game, but getting everything is very tedious, especially farming for the newly added alternative special moves each character has. The board game single player is pretty fun. The game seems a bit lacking however, due to how big brawl was. They can only make it so much bigger. Though it is obvious they put everything they have into this game…and it’s Smash Bros…so it’s timeless fun.

#5

bayo2

Bayonetta 2

PlatinumGames/ Nintendo

In short, this is one of the best action games ever made. Far better than the first one.

#4

super mario maker

Super Mario Maker

Nintendo

2015

This is one of the greatest ideas of all time. Giving players the ability to create their own Mario levels with a ton of ways to do so? Wowee! You could literally play this game the rest of your life, enjoying the millions of stages others have created or just building your own. Some levels are genius, others, not so much. But one things for sure, it’s a whole lot of fun. The one downside is you can only upload 10 levels unless people “like” your levels a whole lot of times, then you can add more. If none get liked enough, they are removed from online, which kind of takes the fun out of making levels, though I see why this is necessary.

#3

New Super Mario Bros. U

Nintendo

2012

They finally stopped f’ing around with the “New” series with this game. This is the first time the platformers could really live up to the old SMW and SMB3. Super creative levels, cool new items and a huge world make this one to remember.

#2

Super Mario 3D World

Nintendo

2013

This game is simply jaw dropping. It gave us everything I could have hoped for. The cat suit is strangely awesome, the levels, gameplay, 4 playable characters…all just incredible.

There you have it…10 incredible games among a whole library of them.

My Top Ten Wii Games

I did not realize how many good games are on this console until I looked at everything I have.

Ahh…the good ol’ Wii. Terrible name, but man did it get people excited. It took me over a year to actually get one for it was selling like crazy. But anywho, when I finally did manage to get my hands on one, I have been building up a library that now consists of 69 games…though I have only played 59, so actually not too bad compared to most of my other systems. There are a lot of games I want to put on this list, but these are the 10 I came up with.

#10

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

re4 wii

Capcom, 2007

I played the crap out of the Gamecube game, so when an improved version came out, I was all over it. Still a great game. The motion controls made it so much more satisfying as well.

#9

New Super Mario Bros Wii

nsmbwii

Nintendo, 2009

While still not nearly as good as SMB 3 or World, this is an excellent platformer that is way better than the first in the “new” series.

#8

Kirby’s Return to Dreamland

Kirbys_return_to_dreamland_boxart

HAL Labs/ Nintendo, 2011

Kirby was hit or miss for me, I really only liked the old game boy games for the most part. Just as I thought they were done making good games for the series, I bought this and was completely blown away. I believe this to be my favorite game in the series.

#7

Mario Kart Wii

mario kart wii

Nintendo, 2008

I have always loved Mario Kart, but none as much as this. I played the fudge out of this game. I did everything you could possibly do in it and I got really stinking good at it. Alas, I haven’t played it in years and am terrible now…

#6

Xenoblade Chronicles

xenoblade

Monolith Soft/ Nintendo, 2012

I had never heard of the Xeno series before this. I thought it looked cool and then suddenly it became super rare and prices online were enormous. I happened to come across it at a GameStop in the middle of nowhere and bought it for the heck of it.

I was blown away. When I thought I was 10 hours in, I was 30. I beat it in 67 hours which felt like maybe 25-30 hours. I just got lost in the story, characters, environments and gameplay. Absolutely superb game.

#5

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

reply_card [Converted]

Retro Studios/ Nintendo, 2007

This game is phenomenal. The Wii controls make you really feel like you are in Samus’ armor. Great environments, new items and cool boss fights make this one to remember.

#4

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

skyward_sword_boxart

Nintendo, 2011

As shown in my series ranked of Zelda games, this is my favorite game in the series (of the ones I have played). Once you mastered the motion controls, the gameplay was quite satisfying. I liked the setting and story of the game quite a bit as well.

#3

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Wii_Titlesheet

Nintendo, 2010

What a magnificent game. So creative and fun. This was a big surprise when they announced it. The fact that they make a sequel just to throw in all the ideas they couldn’t fit into the first game is just awesome. This leads us to #2…

#2

Super Mario Galaxy

SuperMarioGalaxy

Nintendo, 2007

This game is better than the 2nd only because it was a brand new idea and was just insane fun from beginning to end. I literally could not stop playing it. I got all stars for Mario and then immediately did the same for Luigi, which 100% games is something I never take the time to do, especially back to back like that. I just love this game so much.

And my favorite game for the Nintendo Wii is…

#1

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

smash brawl

Game Arts/ Nintendo, 2008

I love this series ridiculously. This is actually the first game I ever preordered. I got to a mall 2 hours before it opened just to be first in line to get the game too…which was a little silly, but whatever. I took it home and have not stopped playing it since. This is the first game in the series that really showed us what the franchise could be. Tons of different modes, crazy stages that you had to watch out for just as much as the characters you are fighting…and a huge roster of said characters and stages. A full blown single player campaign, which stunk but still…and to top it off it gave me nearly all of my most wanted characters at the time.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate- Who Will The DLC Characters Be?

A few months ago, I posted a list of some of my most wanted characters.

So now that the entire roster has been revealed, save for the 5 mysterious post launch characters, let’s see how I lucked out.

First off I said I hoped all the characters come back, and what do you know? They are. I said everyone except Young Link and Pichu, but we even got them, so it’s pretty awesome.

Paper Mario

paper_mario_wii

Nowhere to be seen. He has been my most wanted since Brawl was announced. I hope they make him one of the characters.

Dark Samus

dark samus

Well here is a win…sort of. While I am happy she…he…it?… is in the game, they made her an echo of Samus, which is disappointing because she has such an incredible move set to pull from. I mean, her assist trophy displayed that in Wii U/3DS.

Simon Belmont

simon smash

Another long time wanted is in the game! Can’t wait, he looks awesome!

Sora

Sora_KHIII

Nothing yet, but maybe they will time his release around that with Kingdom Hearts 3? That would be incredible.

Luigi from Luigi’s Mansion

luigi-s-mansion-luigis-mansion-32298744-560-576

Nope. Luigi is still just the weird slight Mario clone that isn’t anything like Mario anymore.

Sonic & Tails

My dream team is not a reality. Bummer.

Viewtiful Joe

Another perfect character for the smash bros universe is nowhere to be seen. Henshin a no no baby.

Wonder Red

Wonder-Red

A great game on Wii U that went completely under the radar. I guess it’s not surprising he didn’t make it in. But maybe DLC alongside a surprise Switch port would be nice.

Dixie Kong

dixie kong

Not as a stand alone or tag team with Diddy. Just a spirit. But they just might deem her as a worthy extra…

Zero

Zero_Assist_Trophy

Well he made it in as an assist trophy at least. I guess that’s better than nothing.

So looking at this, none of my hopes were fulfilled for the most part. I got Simon, an echo fighter and an assist trophy, and the rest…nothing. Oh well, I’m still excited about all the new additions anyway.

Hopefully I will get lucky and a few of these guys will join the roster with the DLC content.

Games That Most People Love, But I Don’t

I thought it would be interesting to see just how many games I don’t like that most of the world quite adore. This is nothing fancy, just a running list I was inspired to write by the very rare times I’ve bought games simply because everyone was raving about them. Of these times I’ve done so, I wound up not really seeing what all the fuss was about half the time. So let’s take a look and see how much I disagree with the world…

Going to start out with an old classic…

  • Tetris: It’s a fun game overall but it gets pretty boring really fast. Hardly anything amazing outside of 1985.
  • Every basic racing and sports game. Series like Need for Speed, FIFA, Madden, Gran Turismo, F-Zero. They are all fun for a bit, but get old fast, which I guess is why they release  some every year.

  • Halo Series. I remember playing the first one when it came out and thinking it was the worst fps I ever played. I’ve only played the first 3 and was equally unimpressed with them all.

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: I really tried to like this game, but it got boring real fast. But admittedly, it isn’t really my cup of tea. It’s the only game I’ve played in the series and the only one I intend to.

  • Shantae: Risky’s Revenge: This is one of the games I bought simply from constantly reading how everyone found it to be absolutely incredible. Yeah, well..it’s not. It’s just an okay platformer. It is the only one in the series I have played and I’ve no interest to go beyond that.

  • Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat/SoulCalibur Series: These are games I really tried to like, but I just don’t like fighting games, so I guess that’s on me.

  • Speaking of fighting games…Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: I thought this was the coolest game ever when I first played it, but it got old real fast. Again, I don’t like fighting games, but this one did it a tad better than most, but still…meh.

  • Animal Crossing Series: I’ve only tried two games and got unbelievably bored within a few hours. I guess I hate sim games, like the Sims. That crap is boring. Why would I want to live a basic life in a game? I have enough with my own real life.

  • Assassin’s Creed Series: I’ve played everyone up to 3, and only liked Brotherhood and Revelations. The rest are horribly boring and stupid and poorly executed in my opinion. And the two I do like, it’s not a strong like, just like an “okay, that was good enough” kind of deal. Plus the ending credits in each game are enough to make you want to kill yourself.

  • Call of Duty Series: This is a weird one. I actually enjoy all the games very much. But I play the campaigns only, whereas virtually everyone but me and two others I know of play for the online play, which to me is when the series started to decline heavily. The games under the “2” title are some of my favorite fps’ ever made, cuz that was before all that online hooplah and they actually put real effort into the games.

  • Elite Beat Agents (DS): While this isn’t like a huge game to most people, everyone who has played it claims it’s so amazing. I don’t know, I got like 3-5 missions in and found it to be just so very boring.

  • Grand Theft Auto Series: The series is good for mindless slaughtering of innocent people for a half hour, but the actual games, like the campaign and all the meat, is just rather long and boring.

  • Star Fox Series: I actually like all of these games but not to the extreme level that most people do. And I find Star Fox 64, probably the most popular one, to be okay at best and one of the worst in the series.

  • The World Ends With You (DS): The only reason I bought this game was because I heard some of the characters were going to appear in Kingdom Hearts 3D. And with this game being called the best game on DS by pretty much everyone, I thought “what could go wrong?” Well, the idea is cool, but I thought the gameplay was rather terrible and the game seemed to never end.

  • Final Fantasy Series: I do like most of the games, and some I don’t like I find okay. Others I despise. But most of them are just miserable to get through regardless of whether I like them or not, often being littered with unbelievably annoying factors and dumb development decisions. The series as a whole is one of the most overrated things I’ve ever heard of. 7 is not nearly as good as people make it out to be either, though I do enjoy it.

  • Super Mario Bros (NES): People always talk about this to be one of the greatest games of all time. Sure in the sense that it is responsible for kickstarting everything we play today and all that, but that is entirely different from how the game plays. Yes, when it first came out, it was jaw dropping. But today, it’s crap. I like the game, but it’s still crap and definitely one of the worst in the Mario series.

  • Going along with that is Super Mario 64: Again, this game is more famous for being revolutionary. I remember being blown away by the 3D graphics and seeing Mario’s world in all new dimensions, but then I was disappointed by the gameplay and the game itself and I found myself missing 2D suddenly. Again, I like this game, but it’s nothing spectacular.

  • Donkey Kong 64: Like SM64, this just made me wish they made another 2D instead. By the time this came out, the 3D wasn’t exciting anymore, so it didn’t even have that going for it. It’s a good enough game however.

  • BioShock: I don’t know about this one. I played it for like 3 hours and then stopped. I loved the commercials when the game came out and was excited to play it, but I just found it to be a boring mess. I have no interest to play the others either.

  • Borderlands Series: I’ve only played the first two, and actually I had no interest in buying them, but my two brothers wanted me to play it, claiming the second one is one of the best games ever, and so they bought them for me, and I wished they just saved their money. The first one is just barely playable, and the second is just barely okay. They are more annoying and monotonous than fun, and though the games have great humor, I am to miserable playing them to actually be amused.

  • Tomb Raider Series: I haven’t played the rebooted ones, but the original games are just okay at best. Kind of boring, but it’s not a horrible struggle to beat them, and they do get better as they go on, so that’s something.

  • Going along with that is the Uncharted Series: This is difficult. I haven’t played the PS4 entries, and I loved 2, but 1 and 3, and thus the series as a whole is rather underwhelming, especially since it’s considered one of Sony’s flagship franchises. And the fact that it is a shameless ripoff of Tomb Raider doesn’t help it either, but it’s done way better than those games, so I guess it balances out.

  • Overlord Series: I get a lot of flak for despising this series. I’ve played the first two and find them to be awful. The gameplay is bad as well as the controls. It’s just a mess and no fun at all.

  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Series: Out of all the games I’ve played in this series, only Vegas 2 did I truly enjoy. The others are just unbalanced, horrible messes that depend too much on AI and the gamer understanding what the heck is going on. Maybe they are just too complicated for someone like myself, who does not have the patience to learn anything like this.

  • Crash Bandicoot Series: I really loved these games when they first came out, but now they are just okay. Definitely not worth getting the recent remaster of the trilogy.

  • Xenogears: This game is okay at times, but I really hated it most of the time. Everything is so slow moving, way too much boring talking for half hour+ times, the story is told in an odd way with a lot of build up and a disappointing ending. The end boss is ridiculous and requires far too much grinding and money to be able to beat him well enough, and by that time, you come to the conclusion it really isn’t worth it because you realized the game stopped being fun 10 hours into it.

  • Devil May Cry 1-3: These games aren’t bad at all, but don’t live up to the hype they get. They are good, but nothing at all spectacular, though I suppose they might have been when they first came out.

  • Jak and Daxter Series: Boy, I really am hating on Naughty Dog. I enjoy all three games, but none of them are truly wonderful. The first is my favorite, but the direction they went after that just wasn’t all that much fun.

  • LittleBigPlanet Series: I thought the first game was incredible when I first played it, but then I realized that it doesn’t cater all that well to single player. You need to play online or local multiplayer to really get the full experience and that is just something I have no interest in doing. They are undoubtedly creative games, but aren’t super fun or anything.

  • Shadow of the Colossus: Everything about this game is awful. I couldn’t even stomach the thought of finishing it.

  • Fatal Frame series: What a horrible mess these games are. They are definitely playable, but they are just too annoying to fully enjoy.

Dear Developers-Linear Video Games ARE Still Fun

Aside from all the negative attention EA is receiving for their whole Star Wars Battlefront 2 mess, they have also recently been accused of shutting down Visceral Games and moving their Star Wars project to another company because of the linearity of the game. Whether this is true, I seriously doubt it, but they have been recently saying, among other developers, that one, people don’t like linear games as much, and two, consumers want to spend a very, very long time on each game.

I assure you, that I, and many people I know still love linear games. They are just as good as non-linear games, if not better. Admittedly, the world does seem to be so obsessed with “open world” styled games, but I personally don’t understand why. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I like them, but to have every game be like that is just ridiculous.

There is something to be said for games that just have you follow a path or two and not have to worry about where to go next or getting lost and all the joys that come with massive games.

To say you don’t like linear games is like saying you don’t like platformers, which is entirely possible if you were born in the last 15 years or so and are one of those people who think because the game doesn’t look and play realistically, it is crap. But should developers really be catering to that audience? Definitely not. They have no idea what a game can be or should be, they are just a bunch of dumb kids and should not be considered gamers.

gow gpThe God of War games are linear and they are some of the best games on their respective consoles. But I bet the new one coming out is going to be open world…oh boy! But this is excusable since it is a reboot, but imagine if God of War 3 was suddenly open world? It would be stupid. Those games are just intense action and it is fun. Many linear games are just as fun. Open world games are much slower moving and you spend an awful lot of time just walking around and looking for stuff. That is why many of them are over 100 hours long.

You could have just as much content in a game with a more condensed world and beat it in 30 hours. So is really adding extra walking time that much better?

Final Fantasy 13 is a game that gets much hate, and I’m pretty sure it is because of the Thundara_FFXIIIlinearity of the game. Big deal. It’s still fun. Just because there is no overworld to explore while constantly getting attacked by enemies trying to find the next town or a cave to explore to look for an item doesn’t make it a bad game. The true core is still there, and that is simply being an RPG set in a fantasy world.

And believe it or not, games don’t need DLC. Put extra effort in development and just pull the plug when it is released. Games typically are better when there is no DLC coming out 3 weeks after the game is released. Some DLC is nice, but most of it is just overpriced garbage that we don’t need. If companies actually did it right and didn’t just use it as a way to make some extra cash, then it would be actually pretty cool. But we live in a greedy, crappy world, so that will never happen.

And a lot of games now focus so much on online play, and how much they can cram into that, leaving single player modes very empty feeling. During the PS2/Xbox/GameCube era, I feel like games had much more girth to them. You got to unlock all sorts of stuff, play through a lengthy campaign that wasn’t obnoxiously long and have a great time doing it.

Now it feels like you get a slimmed down game so the devs can put more effort into the multiplayer, then instead of unlocking things, you have to purchase it later so you can pay the devs to continue to support the online aspects of the game.

Trouble with that is the majority of the gaming world still prefers playing by themselves. People suck. We have to spend all day with people. When we play games, we want to be left alone in a fake world void of other humans.

And really, if you have ever played multiplayer games with people, then you know they are a gathering of the biggest idiots on the planet. 10 year olds fighting with 30 year olds, people swearing in place of using actually grammar… it’s a mess. The gaming community certainly is one of the darker stains on the world, that is for sure. So why continue to go a route that supports such vulgar crap? Give us some solid stuff to play by ourselves. We are the majority of the market after all!

And this, ironically, brings me to the next thing developers have been saying. They claim people want to spend hundreds of hours on a single game. Gone are the days where people play a game and then move on.

This is not the case, I assure. I have a back log of over 300 games, so trust me, I don’t want to spend more than a reasonable amount of time on a game. And I assume that goes for anyone but those “gamers” who do nothing but play online Call of Duty and other online shooters. But I am not saying spending a long time on a game is a bad thing either…for it is not.

But this subject amuses me. Didn’t I just say that I wish they gave us longer single player experiences? Yes, well more valuable experiences, not necessarily longer anyhow.

But anyway, these devs are trying to keep us playing games by constantly coming out with new DLC to play. Trouble is, it’s not free and 99% of it isn’t worth buying. And again, this is really only appealing to people who play nothing but the online aspects.

cod2Speaking of Call of Duty, those games were phenomenal back in the day, when they were nothing but a single player campaign and maybe local multiplayer or whatever. The newer games are still fun, but they don’t come close to what they used to be, because all the effort goes into the online multiplayer.

So why do your original, loyal fans get shafted in favor of these people who like to do nothing but spend countless hours playing against each other? Why can’t they instead make exclusive online shooters, which fortunately seems to be a growing phenomenon, so they don’t in fact screw us single players over.

Another thing devs seem to be so worried about is replay value. How is this an issue if you are not letting us ever stop playing the game!?!?!? So they keep on adding more stuff that we can use on another playthrough and this and that, which is nice, but again, it costs a whole lot more money to do this, especially considering all of this DLC would have been included in the game 12 years ago! This is a big reason linear games are so seemingly unpopular. It is the same thing each play through…

And bottom line is, you really don’t need all this extra fluff in a game to make someone replay it. It could be the most linear game ever, but if the gameplay is fun, I am going to replay it for the sake of just having fun. I don’t need to play it for 200 hours, with new stuff added every 20 of those hours. If the gameplay isn’t all that great, it is going to be a dull, miserable 200 hours. I would much rather play a 5 hour game that is a whole lot of fun 10 times over. And big deal if I don’t replay it immediately. If it is 5 or 10 years down the line, then that means the devs did something right.

Trouble is, they won’t make extra money on it in the months following the games release, which is the whole issue here, so to their company, they did not do something right.

I’m all about trying something new, but don’t let the things from the past that actually worked be forgotten.

The Future Of Super Smash Bros

I have been hearing a lot lately about how people would very much like to see some “Super Smash Bros For Switch Deluxe” something or other, this title being an updated version of Smash for Wii U and 3DS combined, but with some bonus material as well, much in the same manner they did with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokken Tournament DX.

Well, I’ve got a better idea. How about a brand new Smash game? Doesn’t that sound better? Sure the other one would likely come out a whole lot quicker, but why spend the resources? A brand new game, fitted just for Switch makes a whole lot more sense to me. And this time, without the limitations of the 3DS holding it back, it could be a truly perfect game, as good as it can be for both home and handheld play. That is what I want. Not a remake.

But while we are on the subject, let’s talk a bit about the series and what I hate about it. Well…hate might be a strong word.

Let’s get this straight. I love the series…all 5 games are incredible and I still play all of them regularly. The matches are the best part about this. Local multiplayer and even yourself fighting against 3 computers for the sheer fun of it is truly something incredible.

I love the varying stages and the creative and different ways to play on each one. I love the huge cast of characters, and yes, I am including clones as well. I realize they are just a generous bonus from the developers and not “taking the place of another character” as so many outraged people claim. It’s nice to see a clone character rather than them being just a costume. Anyway, playing four player with random characters on random stages has brought me thousands of hours of enjoyment.

But then we get to the more single player stuff. I can not stand it anymore. The multi-man challenges, the homerun contest, the target challenges, classic mode, adventure mode, all-star mode. Dear God I am so sick of them all!

I can’t sit there and beat all these modes with every character in the game another time. We’ve already done it 5 times, and with an ever growing list of characters, it becomes more tedious and annoying.

TrophyIf they are insistent on leaving these, then at least allow us to use a large group of characters at once, or stop giving out trophies for beating it with each one. If you give no reward that people want, then only those who want to do it for fun can have at it. The rest of us who want to collect everything shouldn’t have to suffer through such repetitive and tedious things.

So here are my wishes for the next Smash installment. Drop all that crap. We don’t need it. Developers should spend all their time on characters and stages. Obviously, most of their time is already spent on this I would imagine, but without everything else, they can give us some more. Include every stage and character that has already been in each game and then add a bunch more. I know that is a lot of content and very unrealistic, but who cares? This is my dream! This is all I care about, as many characters and stages to use them on as possible. Oh and maybe some more unique costumes instead of just recolors would be nice too, like what Project M did. Though they do generally base the recolors off a other costumes, so that is something at least.

Luigi_Palette_(SSBM)

But if they really need to keep some single player stuff, keep the event matches. They are actually really fun to play, so I wouldn’t mind that.

Oh, and what happened to unlocking stages and characters? In the Wii U version, you started with nearly everything. Unlocking characters in Brawl and especially Melee made everything so satisfying and fun, and you felt so accomplished after getting them all. And yes, I know if they take out all the fluffy crap like Classic Mode, how will you ever unlock characters? And I simply say, they will think of something, whether it be the event matches, or doing something specific in battles with specific characters or what not. It could easily be done.

Make the adventure unlocking characters, not collecting hundreds of trophies from repeating the same tasks over and over again. Keep trophies for sure, but good God, we don’t need classic anymore. Or custom moves…those have to go. That was the worst. They forced us to beat modes with the same characters over and over again, praying that we would get all their move sets, only doing so after getting the same ones 50 times before getting that damned last one. That was the most tedious chore of them all.

And this game shouldn’t be a chore. It should just be what makes the game so fun. All out  fighting and trying to win for no other purpose than to have fun. 5 stock matches with no time limit for me, all day, everyday!

Super-Smash-Bros.-

Final Fantasy IX: This Is What I Missed

At long last, my Final Fantasy marathon ends here…for the time being anyway. And I have to say, it ended with a great game, bringing me back to my early days when I first played FF 8 and 7, as I described in my post about the first game.

After playing through this game, I have come to the conclusion that Final Fantasy didn’t truly become great games until the PlayStation. I really enjoyed 7-9. The more advanced system with it’s “powerful” hardware allowed for some great story telling visually with the beautiful cut scenes, and the bigger space spread out on multiple discs allowed for more in game story told through a much larger world as well.

FF9 was also void of any annoying things that plagued the series from 6 downward. There were only 2 cheap instant death encounters I met the whole game, and it was mainly due to overpowered counter attacks. For once, I could go through the whole game without wanting to pull my hair out.

Gone too are the obnoxious amounts of random encounters. Most games had you fighting endless amounts of battles for little experience. FF9 reversed that by having less battles with more experience, and that is just fine by me!

The skill system is great in this game as well. Each equipable item has skills attached to them that can teach one specific character something, or multiple people. This is truly great, for by the end of the game, all your characters know a vast amount of skills that you can equip to fit your needs at any time.

The story isn’t great, but it’s enjoyable enough, and there is great character development. The ending, however, is very weak and unnecessarily long for such a disappointing  payoff. But the character development sort of makes up for that though.

The only real complaints I have about the game is that the encounters take way too long to start…like over 10 seconds you have to wait before the battle begins. First it kind of loads, then you are forced to watch as the camera unnecessarily scrolls through your environment, as if the developers were so proud of the world they created. Then your party and the enemies magically fade in to existence and then finally the fight begins…which brings me to my second complaint.

The fighting seems so delayed. It is so slow moving. Sometimes you just are sitting there waiting for something to happen. Even when you have given each member something to do, everyone just kind of dances around for a while, then the enemies go, then one of your characters attack, then the enemy might go again after waiting, then wait some more for one of your guys to go. Honestly, if you tell all four of your characters to do something, it might take close to 2 minutes for your fourth character to finally go. By the time they do, the other 3 have already refilled the battle meter thing and have new commands already inputted. When that fourth character finally goes, you had forgotten what you told them to do and a lot of the time, the flow of the battle has shifted by then so that their attack or whatever is more or less useless.ff9 battle.jpg

But other than that, it is a fun game that I really enjoyed. Now I can finally understand why these games have some kind of following. It only took 9 games and 15 years.

As always, I will rank the games from best to worst. This time though, I will include 7 & 8, though it is a little unfair since I never beat them completely.

Final Fantasy V=Annoying Game

Well, I’m back, here to talk about my experience with Final Fantasy V as I plow my way through most of the series. I’ve already spoken about 1, 2 and 4, and now I’ve got a bit to say about 5 as well.

To start, it’s not a horrible game, but it isn’t very good either. I like the story and the job system was kind of fun, albeit annoying at times. But it made for some fun customization options.

There isn’t too much to say about it that I haven’t already said with all the other games. By now I have realized that all these games have one great flaw. There is just so much annoying crap in them that it makes them very difficult to fully enjoy. This one is no exception. So I am going to single out what really made this game annoying.

That would be the last area in the game…

As per all the games, this place is loaded with difficult monsters that would love nothing more than to kill you most savagely. That’s not the real problem though. The problem is is that these monsters prefer you to be a zombie, a rock or a frog before they kill you. This is the most obnoxious thing about this game. Every monster seems to have the ability to turn you into one of these things. And the dungeon is very long, so you are constantly having to cure yourself of these ailments.

The rock and frog status isn’t horrible, for you can cure them with the Esuna spell, but it gets pretty taxing on your MP, so thank God I just happened to stock up on the curative items, Soft (cures rock) and Maidens’ Kiss (cures frog) throughout the whole game so that I had a crap ton to heal with. I stocked up on these because the last three games taught me that they would most likely come up to annoy the hell out of me, and I was right. But what I had not counted on was the newer zombie ailment. This can’t be cured by any spell other than using a cottage on a save point or sleeping at an inn. The only item that can cure it is Holy Water. I unfortunately did not stock up on these, so I only had 4 on me that I happened to find in chests.

So I painstakingly fight my way to the final boss, only to find that he loves using some spell that does a ton of damage to you, but worse, puts a random status effect on all characters. This is just great, for my first time through, I had used up all my Holy Waters, thus any characters that were zombified had to stay like that. And if you don’t know, this is a serious problem. A zombie character is basically dead, so you lose their attacks against the boss, but they don’t actually die, they instead attack you. And you or the enemy can’t kill them, they will be there forever. You can’t heal them if you don’t have Holy Water, so you are completely screwed and might as well reset the game at this point, because you won’t beat the boss.

So going through from where ever the last save point was, I made sure to keep my 4 Holy Waters. This meant that every time I was turned into a zombie I had to reset the game and try again. After like four tries, I finally made it to the boss and was able to cure all characters that turned into zombies.

This is a needless annoyance. What if I didn’t have any Holy Waters? I would have had to fight my way back out of the dungeon and then buy a bunch of them, and then redo the entire final area all over again! And that is something that just should not happen! Why do all of these games just have annoying, time consuming issues? This doesn’t make the game anymore challenging, it’s just cheap and unfair, stupid and a waste of time. The challenge in a game should not come from such cheap tricks. They are on their fifth game and they still have yet to figure that out!! They wouldn’t be such bad games, but my God! It eventually just gets so irritating that I may or may not look like this…angry.person

And one more thing that is super annoying in this game is the time it takes to bring up the menu. It takes about three seconds. This doesn’t sound like very long, but dear God, when your sitting there just waiting, it seems like much longer.  It takes a tad longer to exit the menu too. So it becomes very annoying.

But the dumbest thing of all about this game is the enemy counterattacks. This is nothing new in the series. Some enemies can counter any of your attacks with either spells or physical attacks. The counterattack would occur immediately after your attack. But not in this game. They would counter whenever they feel like it. And some of these counterattacks are devastating. In the older games, you could react by holding off on an attack or healing someone who was countered, but those simple strategies become obsolete in this game. They will randomly deploy their counterattacks in FF5. So say your guy hits an enemy that counters, you wait a bit, but he does not counter, so you attack again, still nothing, and then again. You’ve done 3 hits to the guy, but one of your characters hits twice in one attack, so that’s four hits to the enemy. After those four hits, he decides to counter with four attacks of his own…one for each hit he took. He will then use his normal attack as well. So that’s five hits coming at you at once. If the counter hits all your characters, there is an extremely high chance you will all die. If it a single person attack, he will likely take out 2 or 3 of your characters.

There seems to be no pattern to when they counter, it is just completely random, and many times have I died due to this horrible flaw.

Would I recommend this game to anyone?
