Super Smash Bros- Reactions to All Characters

The Super Smash Bros series has been around for over 20 years now. The idea of this was something gamers back then only ever dreamed of, or didn’t even bother to dream of because it just seemed so outrageous that we were certain it would never happen.

But one day, Nintendo gave us a game that put video games’ biggest stars in the same arena and let you battle each other. The novelty of this idea has still not worn off on me, and each time I play it, I still have that feeling like I’m playing it for the first time (which is something to be said, since I’ve probably put a good few thousand hours between all the games).

This might be because each game boasts an ever-growing roster of fighters, the latest entry, Ultimate completely destroying all previous games when it comes to content.

Every time a new character is revealed, the internet seems to go into a frenzy, mainly because they don’t like the character, or feels they aren’t deservant enough, and that someone else would have filled that spot better. Or people are ecstatic about the new character. Originally, the game’s roster was only reserved for Nintendo characters, but it has since grown to include many fighters from third-party companies such as Capcom and Sega, so that now Super Smash Bros is a celebration of video game history, not just Nintendo’s history.

So to honor this wonderful franchise, and to throw my hat into the online brawl of opinions, I am going to list a quick reaction of each character in the series. The reaction will obviously be from the game they debuted in.

And for the record, I love every single character, and I don’t care who they put in the game, for a new character is a new character, and that excites me, regardless of who it is.

1. Mario: (SSB)

mario-ssb

“Well of course he’d be the first choice.”

2. Donkey Kong (SSB)

“Great choice.”

3. Link (SSB)

“Weird that they went with adult Link, since he’s been a kid in like all his games.”

4. Samus (SSB)

“Well, I guess this is the closest thing we’re going to get to a ‘Metroid 64.'”

5. Yoshi (SSB)

6. Kirby (SSB)

7. Fox (SSB)

8. Pikachu (SSB)

“Holy crap, they put a Game Boy character into this game? Why would they do that? But it’s awesome to see what he looks like in 3D!”

9. Luigi (SSB)

luigi ssb

“I mean, he has to be in it, but why does he have the same moves as Mario? Then again, he doesn’t exactly do anything differently in his games.”

10. Ness (SSB)

11. Captain Falcon (SSB)

20. Falco (Melee)

31. Solid Snake (Brawl)

“Oh my God! A third-party character. The possibilities now are huge! But Snake? He seems so out of place. But after playing him, I have faith they can now make any character work in this series.”

32. Ike (Brawl)

79. Hero (Ultimate)

80. Banjo-Kazooie (Ultimate)

81. Terry (Ultimate)

82. Byleth (Ultimate)

“There’s got to be one from Fire Emblem. They look awesome at least.”

83. ARMS Rep (Ultimate)

arms smash

“YES! I was hoping one would have been in it already, but better late than never!”

And there you have it. After the ARMS rep, there will still be five more characters added to the roster, and I suppose I will add my reactions as well.

As I said, of all these characters, I enjoy playing as every single one of them, so I don’t really care who they put in, whether I know how they are or not, because I know they will do a good job on them. That’s not to say I don’t have my own hopefuls, which I talk about in this post.

What were some of your most memorable reactions, especially when the first game came out?

My Top 10 Super Nintendo Games

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System…what a console. This has so many incredible titles on it, it is hard to pick 10 without feeling guilty, but 10 I must choose!

I have 52 games for the wonderful console, and have played 44 of them. So here are the 10 that made it on top!

#10- Donkey Kong Country

dkc_snes_boxart

Rare Ltd./ Nintendo, 1994

I remember the first time I saw this game. It was at my cousin’s house. Just from watching him, I was in awe. Never had a game looked so real or so fun. And when he let me play it, I was even more awestruck. I still get that feeling playing it over 20 years later.

#9- Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble

dkc3_snes_boxart

Rare Ltd./ Nintendo, 1996

This game changed the DKC formula while also keeping it almost exactly the same. You had to find parts in the levels to access new levels, there were many different enemies and allies, and Kranky was playing an N64, which was most awesome. It is easily one of the best platformers out there.

#8- Mega Man X2

mmx2_box

Capcom, 1995

This just takes the brilliance of the first game and expands upon it. Starting off with the dash ability is also fantastic!

#7- Mega Man X3

mmx3_box

Capcom, 1996

This game expands upon it’s predecessor in more ways than anyone would have anticipated. So many new items to collect, the coolest looking armor with some of the best abilities in the series. Oh and Zero…YOU GET TO PLAY AS ZERO!!! This game is just a masterpiece no matter how you slice it.

#6- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

yoshi's_island_(super_mario_world_2)_box_art

Nintendo, 1995

I remember watching the ridiculously awesome commercial where a guy just keeps eating until he explodes. But the game itself is incredible. A completely awesome spinoff from the traditional Mario games, you take control of Yoshi with baby Mario riding you. The concept is amazing and incredibly fun as you go from level to level, playing as different Yoshis, eating bad guys, throwing eggs, and a whole slew of tricks Yoshi could never do before. Yoshi was my favorite character in Super Mario World, and to have him basically get his own game and play as all the Yoshi colors from Super Mario World along with a bunch of new ones was a dream come true.

#5- Illusion of Gaia

iog

Quintet/ Nintendo, 1994

This game is incredible. The gameplay is awesome, especially since you can turn into 3 different people. You learn cool upgrades and powers, the story and character development is exceptional, especially for the time. The use of real world places to tell a fictional story is also amazing. And like all the games on this list so far, it has incredible music.

#4- Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest

dk_country_2

Rare Ltd./ Nintendo, 1995

The gameplay, the music, the character design, the improvements, the way better animal friends, the level design, everything is flawless. I would probably put this in the top 5 greatest platformers to ever exist. Diddy and Dixie are probably my favorite duo of all times.

#3- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

link-to-the-past

Nintendo, 1992

This game does what the original game did. Unleash a massive world crammed with secrets, enemies and items beyond which the world has ever seen. There is so much to do in this game it is insane. I still don’t think I’ve ever found everything. From the first epic minute, to the last, this game just fills you with joy.

#2- Super Metroid

Super_Metroid_box

Intelligent Systems/ Nintendo, 1994

This game showed us what a non linear platformer could be. The game is perfect. The atmosphere, the music, the gameplay, the incredible items and boss fights. It’s all here. I have beaten this game probably around 100 times. I love it dearly.

#1- Super Mario World

Super_Mario_World_Coverart

Nintendo, 1991

As far as I’m concerned, the first game out on the system is also the best. This game is huge. Every level is packed with all sorts of fun things to keep you busy for hours. All the addicting items, the countless hidden pathways that take you through a diverse and clever world map, the ridiculous changes beating the Star Road ensue, the game is just perfect and has kept me entertained for nearly 30 years.

Well there you have it, 10 of the best games ever made, all from one of the best consoles ever made.

My Most Wanted For Smash Bros Switch

e3 is less than a week away and I couldn’t be more excited, but mostly I am excited for Tuesdays Nintendo online video, where there is sure to be lots of exciting news, none more so than (hopefully) a good deal of information on the new smash bros game.

Many people still seem doubtful that this is a new game, but rather a port of the Wii U/3DS versions, which would be a huge let down after all the hype, so I seriously doubt it is. Plus when they initially announced it, they seemed to go out of their way to title the trailer “Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros” instead of Super Smash Bros for Nintendo switch, which were how the Wii U and 3DS games were titled.

So anyway, there are thousands of characters people want to see appear in these games each time one comes out. Brawl gave me several characters I wanted added (Toon Link, Wolf, Sonic). After that game, anything seemed possible, especially since they added so many newcomers (though I think Little Mac was the only one added that I really wanted in 4…oh and Mega Man…and Shulk…k that one delivered too).

So here are some characters I would love to see…and no…Ridley and King K. Rool are not going to be on this list. I am not opposed to literally any character becoming playable, and honestly I get excited for any newcomer, even if I don’t know who they are, but I would be a tad more excited if these upcoming characters appear.

First and foremost, I would love to see every character that has been cut back in it, which means Snake, Wolf and especially the Ice Climbers, who were only cut because of the limitations of the 3DS. The only ones that don’t need to come back are Young Link, Toon Link is a perfect replacement and Pichu…cuz why?

And now onto the newcomers I would love to see.

Paper Mario (Paper Mario series obviously)

paper_mario_wii

I know, another Mario character, but he would just be so cool. With a ton of partners and sweet special moves to pull from, he could be a whole lot of fun.

Dark Samus (Metroid Prime series)

DarkSamus

Aside from looking cool, Dark Samus has an impressive array of powers and abilities, some of them demonstrated as an assist trophy in the last game. Now make it fully playable!

Simon Belmont (Castlevania series)

Simon_Belmont_-_01

This has been a third party character I’ve wanted for a while. His legacy on NES, his chain and special weapons all make him a great candidate for smash.

Sora (Kingdom Hearts series)

Sora_KHIII

I love Kingdom Hearts, so to see the main character in one of my favorite games of all time would be magical. Again, he has an enormous move set to pull from to make him a worthy adversary against Nintendo’s finest.

Luigi (Luigi’s Mansion)

luigi-s-mansion-luigis-mansion-32298744-560-576

Give Luigi a moveset based off his Mansion games. There is no need to have him a partial Mario clone anymore, though I was thrilled his final smash in 4 used the poltergust.

Sonic and Tails (Sonic series…duh)

sonic and tails

Instead of just Sonic, let these two be a team like the Ice Climbers, since in the Genesis games, they functioned in the exact way the Ice Climbers do now.

Viewtiful Joe (game with the same name)

Viewtiful_Joe

He’s awesome and has a nice, crazy moveset that would fit right in.

Wonder Red (Wonderful 101)

Wonder-Red

He is from the team that made Viewtiful Joe, so I guess I would rather see Red, for he is actually a Nintendo character. Maybe give him a combination of all the other wonder’s power which would give him a truly awesome moveset.

Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country Series)

dixie kong

Either as a team with Diddy or stand alone character, I want her.

Zero (Mega Man X series…not the Zero series look)

zero

I would love to have X, Mega Man and Zero all be in it, but hey, Zero would be a cool addition if I had to choose one, after Mega Man, that is.

And those are just some of my more hopefuls that came to mind right off the bat. Paper Mario is my most wanted for sure, ever since leading up to Brawl. Of course there are dozens more I would love to see in it too.

But I will not be disappointed with who they add, as long as there are very little cuts and plenty of additions, I will be thrilled.

Top 10 Game Boy Games

I’ve shown my 10 favorites games for the 3DS and DS, but now let’s take it back to the granddaddy of handheld systems, the Nintendo Game Boy. You remember it, right? That ugly gray, massive brick that took four AA batteries with the diarrhea colored graphics?

Despite its primitiveness, it still was home to many classic games that are still very fun to play even today, over 2 decades later. But which 10 are the best? Let’s find out!

I only have 20 Game Boy games, and only have played 16 of them. I don’t know, that’s just the way it goes. But of those 16, here are my 10 favorite. The developers and release year for each game will also be listed.

#10

gb_kid_icarus_myths_and_monsters_p_7s9lumKid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters

TOSE/Nintendo

1991

The sequel to Kid Icarus for NES, it had all the fun of the first game, but was way down scaled, making it a shorter and much easier game than the first.

#9

KDL2_BoxartKirby’s Dreamland 2

HAL Labs/Nintendo

1995

I still remember the first time I played this game. I loved the first game, but this took it up so many levels. With more powers and neat little friends to ride around on, the game was just so much better in every way.

#8

WarioLandBoxArtSuper Mario Land 3: Wario Land

Nintendo

1994

It’s not every day someone can say they stole not only the spotlight from Mario, but also the reins. Wario became such a popular villain, that he got his own Mario-esque platformer that was so good it rivaled Mario’s own games. It really is hard to say which is better, as far as Game Boy games are concerned.

#7

Super_Mario_Land_2_box_artSuper Mario Land 2

Nintendo

1992

After careful consideration, I found this game to be just a bit better than it’s sequel. This is the game that conceived Wario, which was awesome enough, but the fun, different power ups and unique worlds and levels are what really make this game shine.

#6

Donkey_Kong_Land_2_CoverartDonkey Kong Land 2

Rare Ltd./Nintendo

1996

What do you get when you take one of the best games ever made and slap it on Game Boy? An inferior, smaller version of course…that you can play anywhere! This is a much shorter version of the SNES game, but is still a whole lot of fun.

#5

Donkey_Kong_Land_III_CoverartDonkey Kong Land 3

Rare Ltd./Nintendo

1997

Again, this is just a smaller scaled version of it’s SNES counterpart, but there were some differences as well, which is why it is higher than it’s prequel.

#4

wario-land-2Wario Land 2

Nintendo

1998

I played the fudge out of this game when I was a kid. Having started his own franchise now, he also adopted a more unique style of gameplay, thus distancing himself from his cousin. What we got was a clever, unique and unbelievably fun platformer that I found very hard to put down, even after beating it over and over again.

#3

Donkey_Kong_Land_CoverartDonkey Kong Land

Rare Ltd./Nintendo

1995

This game is amazing. It is the only game in the trilogy that is completely unique from the SNES versions, but obviously it still borrows heavily from Donkey Kong Country. Besides an annoying and terrifying way to save, this is a wonderful platformer.

#2

red-bluePokemon Red/Blue

Game Freak/Nintendo

1998

This was a game changer. The release of these two games literally shook the world and changed the lives of every youth on the planet. Cards and a TV show followed and Pokemon continues to be one of the most popular…things…ever created, and it all started here. The ability to walk around a huge world and catch 150 creatures and use them to fight with an enormous variety of moves was what made this game so appealing. Well that and you could link your Game Boy with a friends to trade Pokemon or battle. It was just such an amazing time to be alive and still brings warm feelings to my heart…sniff…

#1

Metroid_II_US_boxartMetroid II: Return of Samus

Nintendo

1991

Here it is, the best game on Game Boy, as far as I am concerned anyway. This game blew my mind. I didn’t even have to play it to love it. I used to just stare at the cover art because Samus just looks so cool there. But once I played it, I could not believe what an amazing game this is. It destroyed the first game on NES in every way possible. A bigger, much less confusing world jam packed with enemies and secrets, better graphics, new power ups, amazingly better gameplay, etc… I was just so amazed how good this was for a simple Game Boy game. It still impresses me to this day. I can’t wait to get my hands on the remake that just came out.

Well there you have it. The top 10 Game Boy games! I would recommend trying these out if you get the opportunity to!

SNES Classic Is A Disappointment/Predictions for N64 Classic

This is just my opinion. Don’t get me wrong. The idea is wonderful. A miniature retro console packed with the best games to be released on it, all in HD and for an affordable price? It is amazing!

But it really is only amazing for people who missed out on these consoles. People who already owned the NES and SNES aren’t really missing out on much. And many of you may think, “and that is exactly who it is marketed towards, people who missed it…” You are right, but I have a feeling it is even more so towards those who have nostalgic feelings towards the consoles, who want to relive their youths. And to that I say¬† to Nintendo-Stop profiting off our childhoods!! We already gave you enough!!

Nonetheless…If they weren’t so rare, they would be something great that I would probably pick up whenever the price fell.

But everybody knows the NES Classic sold out immediately and if you want one, your likely going to pay 10 times the price.

But anyway, that is not what I want to talk about.

nes-classic-edition-box.png

First off, let me talk about my feelings for the NES Classic. When they first announced it, I was really excited. I had to have one.

And then I realized something within a few seconds. 30 games for the NES! Oh wait, I probably already have most of them, and I really don’t like most games on NES anyways.

Turns out, this was accurate. They put every game worth having on NES on it, but I, and everyone else who has owned an NES or virtual console probably already has them. I owned all the games except 6 or 7 of them already, and some of them I had multiples of through various systems and re-releases and the like. The handful I was missing, I had no interest in ever playing, so I immediately stopped wanting one, and thank God for that, since they are impossible to get a hold of.

But what I am really trying to say here, is that, $60 for 30 quality games is amazing. The limited supply for a limited time approach…why? That’s a dumb move.

But I, like most people, were already wondering if they were going to make an SNES Classic, one of my favorite consoles of all time. I was even more excited when they confirmed it compared to the NES Classic, but again, immediately realized I already have everything on the system worth having…for the most part.

And now we come to the part where I describe why the SNES Classic is so disappointing.

IT IS 20 DOLLARS MORE EXPENSIVE AND HAS 9 GAMES LESS!

Like… what the hell? You can’t tell me that porting all these games onto this little system cost so much more. They are still 25 year old games and not really worth all that. Though, really, again, the price is still pretty fair. But not compared to it’s predecessor. They are not that much more advanced that they need cost so much more.

And price figures aside, why couldn’t they just make it an even 30 games? There are so many worthy titles on that system. What the heck? I bet you they are going to make some bull crap DLC to fill in the 9 missing spots for another $20.

But anyway, if you don’t know, here are the 21 games.

  1. Contra III: The Alien Wars
  2. Donkey Kong Country
  3. EarthBound
  4. Final Fantasy III
  5. F-Zero
  6. Kirby Super Star
  7. Kirby’s Dream Course
  8. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Pastcastlevania4-spot2.png
  9. Mega Man X
  10. Secret Of Mana
  11. Star Fox
  12. Star Fox 2
  13. Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  14. Super Castlevania IV
  15. Super Ghouls n’ Ghosts
  16. Super Mario Kart
  17. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  18. Super Mario World
  19. Super Metroid
  20. Super Punch-Out
  21. Yoshi’s Island

So there’s the line up, and it is an impressive one without a doubt. But some of these are ridiculous choices over some others, though I can see why they would want to vary up the selection a bit.

And again, I have all but 4, but I already have Street Fighter II in 2 or 3 other forms, used to own Secret of Mana, and Star Fox 2 has never been released. So really, Contra is the only one I missed and have no interest in playing.

So again, this is a wonderful, wonderful idea for any younger people who may have missed out on this glorious age of gaming.

But here’s what the other 9 should be, to really embrace the system. For starters, Super Mario World should be replaced with Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World.

22. Chrono Triggerchrono triiger

23. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest

24. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie’s Double Trouble

25. Illusion Of Gaia

26. Mega Man X2

27. Mega Man X3mm7

28. Mega Man 7

29. Final Fantasy II

30. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time

There you go! A nice even 30! Though who knows? Licensing and copyrights and all that could prevent a lot of this, and they probably didn’t want to put entire series like Mega Man and Donkey Kong on it.

But this leads me to my next question. Do these mini consoles spell the end for Virtual Console? I feel like this is directly competing with it. Switch does not have it yet, so does this mean it is no longer? Is is just going to be that subscription they talked about where you can stream games? I hope not, personally.

But anyway, yeah, not happy with the decisions behind the SNES Classic overall. And there is evidence now of an N64 Classic coming next year. Those are much bigger games, so I expect that it will cost $100 for 15 games.

I’ll even predict them for you.

  1. Diddy Kong RacingF-Zero_X_(USA)-1
  2. Donkey Kong 64
  3. F-Zero X
  4. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
  5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  7. Mario Kart 64
  8. Mario Party 2
  9. Mario Tennis
  10. Paper MarioPokemon_Stadium_(Europe)-3
  11. Pokemon Stadium
  12. Star Fox 64
  13. Super Mario 64
  14. Super Smash Bros
  15. Wave Race 64

If that is accurate, I have all but 4 again, and used to own one of those four…

SNES REMIX, Where Are You?

This blog is for Nintendo and anyone who owns their products, more specifically a 3DS and/or Wii U. If you own these systems, then chances are you have heard of and probably played the NES Remix titles, (2 for Wii U, 1 for 3DS). All are fabulous games, filled with nostalgia, challenge, fun and excitement. A player can relive his childhood or experience games from a generation they were too young to live through.

When I played through NES Remix, I felt all of these things with the games I was familiar, and even found a game or two I have not played before. After beating most of it I found that the game would be very easy if it weren’t for the god awful controls and handling all games back then seemed to possess. What’s worse, most of the challenges took advantage of the poor handling and forced you to overcome it to beat the challenges within the shortest amount of time possible. To me, this isn’t very fun, all it seemed to do was remind me of why I hated gaming back then and that gamers only suffered through it because it was new and the best thing available at the time. In other words, we didn’t know any better. We didn’t realize we were suffering. But I still remember playing Super Mario Bros at the ripe age of three or four and wishing the controls were better. And the worst part is, those are some of the best controls on the system (for the earlier games anyway). But the game was fun nonetheless, and I wanted more, so I powered on through.

Though after all the nostalgia wears off and the hours of gameplay rack up and you find yourself struggling through some challenges over and over again to get those three stars, you start to realize why you were glad to leave these old games behind when something new came along. That something being the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

I dreamed more of this game actually being in existence over focusing on what I was playing. The SNES has arguably one of the best libraries of games for any console to date, and showcased some of Nintendo’s finest ideas that helped shape the gaming industry as it is today. One of the things refined the most between each system was the controls. With some exceptions, the controls and handling for all the games were phenomenal, the 16 bit graphics were gorgeous on the system and again, great games.

Imagine games such as Super Mario World, Super MarioKart, Super Metroid, A Link To The Past, all crammed into one game filled with challenges and other new exciting surprises Nintendo would be sure to add. It would truly be a wonder to behold. Holding a copy of these game in my hands would make me truly feel like a kid again.

This game would be amazing enough with just Nintendo games, but what if they expanded to third party games as well. Bam! Super Castlevania, Illusion of Gaia (if only) Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3 (6?)…heck pretty much any game off this system would be a welcome addition.

So come on Nintendo! Fulfill my dreams, as well as thousands, dare I say millions others who I am sure share this dream. I for one would be eternally grateful. Not that I am not already, for giving me wonderful memories from my childhood with the SNES, but now it would be nice to have all those memories reinvented and brought forth with new light and a modern day twist.
