Paper Mario Series Ranked

In honor of the recent release of Paper Mario: The Origami King for Nintendo Switch, I am going to take the entire series, well, all the ones I’ve played anyway, and rank them from worst to best.

I don’t like saying worst to best, because I think every single one of these games is a grand slam. It’s easily one of my favorite series, out there, (it actually came in fourth in my top 10 video game series).

Aside from them being all great, diverse, unique, creative, and charming, it’s the story-telling and humor that really gets me. I can’t explain it, but there’s a certain feeling I get when playing these games that basically says, “yeah, I’m playing Paper Mario, and I’m ecstatic.”

This series doesn’t have a lot of games, which makes it all the more special.

So here we go!

#5

Super Paper Mario

Wii, 2007

Times Beaten-1

The first to stray from the original formula, this takes the classic Mario platforming and combines it with RPG elements and showers the bizarre Paper Mario creativity all over it. Despite being last on the list, it’s still a wonderful game.

#4

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

3DS, 2012

Times Beaten- 1

This one returns to turn-based combat, but requires you to have stickers to attack. You have a sticker book to hold all your stickers, but it has limited space. Weak attacks are small, and stronger ones are huge, so you’ve got to balance them out and use what’s necessary during battles. This adds a fun strategical element to the game. The game also takes the whole paper theme to a new level.

The game uses a world map like in Super Mario World, dividing the game into stages for the first time. It also involves a lot of back-tracking and puzzle solving, which is impossible to figure out. I needed to use a guide the whole game, because it was so confusing.

#3

Paper Mario: Color Splash

Wii U, 2016

Times Beaten- 1

This one is more like Sticker Star, but instead of stickers you use cards to attack, and have to paint them during battle to make them more powerful. You can play three cards at once, and it is rather fun to set up attack trains to fit the situation. The only trouble is, killing enemies grants you items that when enough are gathered, your paint supply grows. Eventually, when it’s big enough to suit your needs, there is no point in fighting enemies. That’s right, there is no experience and level-ups in this game.

#2

Paper Mario

Nintendo 64, 2001

Times Beaten- 2

The one that started it all, and still one of the most bizarre and brilliant ideas of all time. This is a classic JRPG, but with massively unique elements, though it does borrow from Super Mario RPG. Awesome characters, a variety of partners to help you fight, silly story, it’s all awesome.

#1

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

GameCube, 2004

Times Beaten- 2, maybe 3??

The gameplay in this one is just like the first one. Every area in this level is fantastic and imaginative, and is one of the few games I’ve ever played that I got sad when I beat it. This may be my favorite game of all time, as a matter of fact. Or at least second-favorite.

All these games are hilarious, have fun worlds to explore, characters with quirky personalities, addicting gameplay, and a whole lot of frickin’ awesome.

The world is very divided on this series. Many people complain that they changed the formula and wish the series returned to the the style of the first two.

There’s no denying (in my book) the first two are by far the greatest, but that is no reason to hate on the others, for they are all solid, unbelievably fun and witty games.

Would I like to see a return to the originals? Absolutely, but I am also excited for new ideas, and am anxious to see what other creative, unique, WTF things they can come up with. Which is why I can not wait to play Origami King!

Super Smash Bros- Reactions to All Characters

The Super Smash Bros series has been around for over 20 years now. The idea of this was something gamers back then only ever dreamed of, or didn’t even bother to dream of because it just seemed so outrageous that we were certain it would never happen.

But one day, Nintendo gave us a game that put video games’ biggest stars in the same arena and let you battle each other. The novelty of this idea has still not worn off on me, and each time I play it, I still have that feeling like I’m playing it for the first time (which is something to be said, since I’ve probably put a good few thousand hours between all the games).

This might be because each game boasts an ever-growing roster of fighters, the latest entry, Ultimate completely destroying all previous games when it comes to content.

Every time a new character is revealed, the internet seems to go into a frenzy, mainly because they don’t like the character, or feels they aren’t deservant enough, and that someone else would have filled that spot better. Or people are ecstatic about the new character. Originally, the game’s roster was only reserved for Nintendo characters, but it has since grown to include many fighters from third-party companies such as Capcom and Sega, so that now Super Smash Bros is a celebration of video game history, not just Nintendo’s history.

So to honor this wonderful franchise, and to throw my hat into the online brawl of opinions, I am going to list a quick reaction of each character in the series. The reaction will obviously be from the game they debuted in.

And for the record, I love every single character, and I don’t care who they put in the game, for a new character is a new character, and that excites me, regardless of who it is.

1. Mario: (SSB)

“YES! I was hoping one would have been in it already, but better late than never!”

And there you have it. After the ARMS rep, there will still be five more characters added to the roster, and I suppose I will add my reactions as well.

As I said, of all these characters, I enjoy playing as every single one of them, so I don’t really care who they put in, whether I know how they are or not, because I know they will do a good job on them. That’s not to say I don’t have my own hopefuls, which I talk about in this post.

What were some of your most memorable reactions, especially when the first game came out?

Metroid 5…Will It Ever Happen?

What is the deal with the Metroid series? Why does it never get any love?

I’ve read it’s really only popular in the west…or is it Japan? One of them it does really well, the other side of the world not so much.

But regardless, it still has to make Nintendo quite a bit of money, so what the heck?

Is the awesome gameplay, great atmosphere, fun exploration and item collecting just not worth anybody’s time? What makes this more frustrating is that there have been about 10,000 “metroidvania” games that have come out in the last 10 years, which is how long ago we got the last Metroid game…besides a remake.

But that is annoying too. I have Samus Returns, I haven’t played it yet, but I can’t wait to when I finally get around to it. But we are in a world where we get just as many remakes or remasters as we do new games.

When Metroid Prime 4 was announced last year, I was super excited, but when that 4 popped up on the “trailer” my first thought was that it was a remake of Metroid Fusion. That is when I realized that I am conditioned now to expect remakes over new games.

And did we really need Metroid Prime 4? That series closed out nicely. Why not go onto a different story line? I love the first person take and would love to see more games in that style, but I would also like to see more third person games like Other M, except done better this time around, and I absolutely would love some more sidescrollers.

The whole time we had the DS and 3DS, we got one game for each, Metroid Prime Hunters, one of the worst in the series, and Metroid II: Samus Returns. But isn’t anyone curious what happens to Samus after Fusion? That had such a cool story line; I couldn’t wait to see where they took it from there. Trouble is, we’ve been waiting almost 20 years to see what happens. And that is simply unacceptable.

I am giving myself false hope that they will release a Metroid 5 alongside Prime 4 like they did with Fusion and the first Prime game all those years ago.

But then again, who knows? Maybe Prime 4 takes place after Fusion and not between Prime 3 and Metroid II, like I assume?

But they need to give us a new sidescrolling adventure for sure. Zero Mission was the last I have played, and it was mind blowing…and again…that was a remake. Probably the best remake of all time…but still.

Just for kicks, look at how spread out the release dates are.

Those are the years of the mainline games. The oughts were a great decade, the success of Metroid Prime and Fusion probably pushing them to make more. But it all stopped with the not so great Other M. Hopefully Prime 4 will push us into another great decade…the 20’s being full of Metroid games!

Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee-Bringing Families Closer Together

This new game has done what I thought not possible.

I am a huge gamer and was in third grade when Pokemon took over the world. I loved the cards, the show, and especially the games…that is…red, blue and yellow. I lost interest in the games a little after Silver and Gold came out, because like a dumb kid, I was like “How dare they expand upon something I love and insult my nostalgia!?!?!”

But a few years ago I picked up where I left off, reentering the games with HeartGold/ SoulSilver, and now have every mainline Pokemon game except the Sun and Moon ones. And I now love the series more than I ever did as a child.

Then Pokemon Go comes out, and I had no interest at all in playing it. But my wife, who despises everything about video games and yells out me regularly for my hobby, has been playing Go nonstop since it came out and absolutely loves it.

I appreciated the game for bringing her into something I have more or less loved my whole life. Suddenly, she became just as knowledgeable as me, if not more so, on the franchise.

So naturally, I tried to get her to play the mainline games, which she will never, ever do and gets mad every time I ask. At the same time, she always asks me to play Pokemon Go, which I still have no interest in doing either. This frustrates my wife, as she claims “You have a thousand video games, yet you won’t play the one I actually do!”

Enter Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee. Eevee happens to be my wife’s favorite Pokemon, and here comes this game that let’s you have one walk around with you.

When I first saw the trailer, I thought it looked very good, was a smart business decision and pretty fun looking. I had no interest in it for myself, but I wondered what my wife would think, and so I showed her the trailer, and she loved it.

I just recently got it for her birthday and it has changed our lives (slight dramatization there). Here we are, playing co-op in a remade game that I cherished as a kid (and still do, really) with my wife in control. I don’t always play with her, cuz I find it kind of boring being the second player, but I find it so much more fascinating to watch her travel through Viridian Forest, battle Brock and all that, sharing the same experiences I had 20 years ago, but now with better graphics and different gameplay. It reminds me of my first time playing the first Pokemon games as I watch her play through it for the first time.  What’s more is she loves it. She actually likes it better than Pokemon Go, which I would have never thought possible.

It is truly baffling to me that when I go to bed, she goes and turns on my Switch and plays Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee for hours. Thanks to this new rendition of Pokemon, our similar interest, but on branching paths, have been joined and we can actually enjoy one of our greatest passions together, and for that, Nintendo, I thank you.

My Nintendo Account: First Impressions

Nintendo-840x420

The new My Nintendo account, replacement of the old Club Nintendo rewards program has at last been launched. I’d like to talk about the differences between the new and old, and see if this is an improvement or not.

Right away I must say I am rather disappointed by My Nintendo. The whole thing is a nonsensical mess. You can receive three types of points. The first being platinum points, which can be used for a 15% discount off select games designated by the site. You can get platinum points by completing missions, though the only ones I’ve seen so far are just linking my Nintendo network ID to My Nintendo Account and logging onto Miiverse or visiting the eShop.

Image result for nintendo

Gold points, which for some reason, are better than platinum, thus reversing what Club Nintendo’s points used to be…and well…every single other type of awards in the history of medals and trophies. These are obtained by actually purchasing games. What aggravates me, is only games purchased off the eShop are eligible. That’s right. With Club Nintendo,  physical copies of all first party games, and even some others provided buyers with a code you could enter to get points. Not anymore. It’s all digital only now, and its bull poop.

The amount of points you get varies on the amount of money you spend on eShop. For example, one mission is spend $40.00-$49.99 for 50 points, the next would be $50.00-$59.99 for 60 points.

And what can you do with these points? You get a 30% discount off some bigger games, like Splatoon, or even some free virtual console games. The good news about these rewards is that they don’t require too many points to obtain them, but the issue here is that you likely are going to be buying all the big Nintendo games off eShop just to get all the points anyway. I, for one, already have literally every single game available for free or discount on the site except for two of them, which I would have already if I actually wanted them. So unless you plan on buying a ton a cheap indie games, which I do often enough if they go on a good sale, you will not likely ever get to use these gold points on anything you really would want to. There are no fun physical rewards to be seen either, another thing Club Nintendo did better.

The third and final type of points are the Miitomo points, obtained for doing things on Nintendo’s first ever mobile app (game?) that launched alongside My Nintendo. There are a bunch of missions related to Miitomo for account members to complete, and a few rewards that I am not sure what they do, due to the fact that I do not own Miitomo, though it is a free app, so if I wanted points that badly, I suppose I could always download it. But obviously, the rewards are usable in the game. You can also combine Miitomo points and platinum points to get the platinum rewards as well, so maybe it is worth spending time on the free app…you know… if I didn’t already own all the games that are discounted via spending earned points. And you can also use platinum points on Miitomo rewards too. So they are basically the same.

Each type of point comes with its own bank and keeps track of them separately for you, which is nice.

My Nintendo feels like it is just a tool to help push Miitomo, with enough junk on it to keep people interested, however so slightly. Does it compare to Club Nintendo? Not even close, this new rewards program falls way short. But I guess it is nice that they do this at all, and I must say it is really quite easy to get platinum points, and by the sound of the Miitomo missions, they seem pretty easy to.

To be fair, the site is brand new, so I am hoping more and more missions and rewards become available as time goes on, and then maybe, just maybe, My Nintendo will become a worthy successor of the missed but not forgotten Club Nintendo.
