10 Of The Most Epic Moments In The Dragon Ball Anime Series’

I was going to say top 10 most epic moments, but let’s face it, nearly every episode has at least 5-10 epic moments within, so picking the top 10 was pretty much impossible. So these 10 listed are some of the most epic, but I can’t say with any real certainty if they are in fact the top 10. Regardless, these moments really got my blood flowing.

I will be excluding the Tournament of Power arc in this one, because that whole thing is just unbelievably epic, so the top 10 on this list would likely all come from that arc alone. So I guess you could say that’s the number one spot in a way.

But anyway, here are 10 of the most epic moments in the four Dragon Ball animes (in my opinion).

#10: Goku’s First Full Episode As A Super Saiyan (Dragon Ball Z)

Why This Moment is So Epic: For like 20 episodes, we watched Frieza decimate the Z-fighters. And when any of them managed to gain ground, he would transform and become even more relentlessly powerful. Even when Goku finally steps in, he is outmatched tremendously.

The entire situation seems hopeless. This is especially confirmed when Frieza survives the enormous Spirit Bomb, Goku’s trump card.

But when his lil’ buddy goes boom and Goku transforms for the first time, the following episode (when they actually start fighting) shows Goku with his new Super Saiyan power actually overwhelm Frieza, outclassing him in every way. The feeling is truly wonderful, and relieving, and oh so epic.

#9: Gohan Vs Goku (Dragon Ball Super)

Why This Moment is So Epic: Let’s face it. We’ve always been curious how Gohan would fare in a fight against Goku ever since the former became a Super Saiyan 2, but especially when he reached his Ultimate Form during the Majin Buu saga.

DBS fulfills this wish with a sparring match of father vs son, so Goku can test Gohan to see if he is ready for the Tournament of Power. The fight is short, but is filled to the brim with intensity and epicness.

#8 Goku Transforming Into Super Saiyan 3 For The First Time (Dragon Ball Z)

Why This Moment is So Epic: The fact that Goku starts off showing Buu all his other forms is awesome. And if you remember the first time you watched it, in the back of your mind you’re thinking, “Wait, is he going to have a third form?” And sure enough, Goku starts talking about digging deeper, and the yelling and screaming begins over one of the best music tracks in the entire series, with some awesome commentary from the other characters building up the hype.

When he finally pulls it off, it’s a rather radically different appearance with a strictly lightning aura. It stills gives me chills every time I see it.

It’s so epic in fact, that I read somewhere the voice actor passed out while recording all the yelling. That’s f*ing epic.

#7 Gohan Transforming Into A Super Saiyan For The First Time (Dragon Ball Z)

Why This Moment Is So Epic: Goku is doing his best throughout the duo’s training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to get Gohan to transform. He finally puts his son against the ropes, and Gohan finds himself recalling all the times he’s let people down while his father’s words and advice ring through his head. He finally let’s it all out, and afterwards, you see him struggle with his anger while he attempts to keep up the transformation. So epic.

#6 Vegeta Defeating Magetta (Dragon Ball Super)

Why This Moment Is So Epic: Vegeta seems to be in a hopeless situation as Champa somewhat cheats and locks him in a glass box so he can’t breathe. Not to mention the fact that his opponent can spew lava and is impervious to like all damage. But after a tough fight, the Saiyan prince gets pretty angry, destroys the glass box, and fires a Final Flash, accompanied by a whole lot of yelling, and then finishes him off with an epic punch.

#5 Goku Using Blue/Kaioken Against Hit

(Dragon Ball Super)

Why This Moment Is So Epic: Hit seems like an unstoppable opponent. Even though Goku improves throughout the fight, Hit is literally always one step ahead of him. But then Goku brings out a move we haven’t seen in decades, the red aura of Kaioken merging with his Super Saiyan Blue one, for an awesome look and even more powerful combination of power-ups. He then unleashes an epic flurry of attacks and finishes it off with a gigantic Kamehameha Wave for a truly epic scene.

#4 Goku Finishing Kid Buu With Spirit Bomb

(Dragon Ball Z)

Why This Moment is So Epic: Majin Buu killed a lot of people. Everyone in fact, save for a handful of folks. After an extremely long struggle against Buu in his many forms, the final battle takes place on the Supreme Kai’s homeworld. Things look entirely hopeless, until Vegeta hatches an ingenius plan that culminates up to Goku tossing a gigantic Spirit Bomb at the lil’ pink fella. After an awesome struggle where Buu still seems to be able to win out, Goku is healed by the dragon, recounts what an a-hole Buu is, and blows him to smithereens in pure epicness.

#3 Vegeta Using Final Flash For The First Time

(Dragon Ball Z)

Why This Moment Is So Epic: Vegeta’s arrogance seems to have gotten the better of him. We all hated him for bullying Trunks and allowing Cell to reach his ultimate form, which proved to be too much. But then Vegeta surprises everyone with a new attack. The lengthy, intense buildup, complete with lightning, shocked characters, and awesome music culminates into an enormous blast of energy, so that for a time, we actually think Vegeta succeeds in defeating Cell.

#2 Goku Defeating King Piccolo (Dragon Ball)

Why This Moment Is So Epic: Goku and Piccolo both gain tremendous power throughout this arc, and it seems like Goku will come out top dog. But through some under-handed tactics, the little hero finds himself crippled in most of his limbs. As Piccolo moves in for the kill, Goku faces him with no fear and delivers the most epic punch ever, yelling “I’m coming at you with everything I’ve got!” That gets me every time. So. Epic.

#1 The Cell Games (Dragon Ball Z)

dragon ball z gohan ss2 punching cell

Why This Moment Is So Epic: Okay, so this is more than a few moments. Like the Tournament of Power, the entire Cell Games is incredible, but on a much smaller scale.

Literally everything that happens is so over-the-top awesome. Hercule and his apprentices getting wrecked, we get to see all the Z-fighters the buffest they ever will be, Goku and Cell’s fight is in my opinion the best fight in all of Z, Gohan’s power-up before fighting Cell is so flippin’ epic, the Cell Juniors beating the heck out of people, Android 16 dying to set off Gohan’s first transformation into Super Saiyan 2, with awesome music I might add, where he unleashes crazy power to wreck all the Juniors and punch Android 18 out of Cell.

Whew, and don’t forget, Goku dying with King Kai, Cell coming back stronger than ever, Vegeta losing it after Trunks gets a whole blown through him, and then a final epic Kamehameha showdown between two superpowers. Every episode is killer. Oh man.

It’s obvious why this is my second favorite saga, and Tournament of Power is my first. They literally define Epic!

But aside from those two, the rest is hard to truly rank. As I said, these shows are chock-full-of epic moments, so these are really just 10 out of a very, very long list.

What are some of your favorite moments?

Is Goku Really That Strong?

Goku is the main protagonist of the long-running Dragon Ball series and probably the most well-known anime character of all time, thus I really don’t need to give him an introduction.

Goku is depicted as this unstoppable beast of a martial artist. When the going gets tough, the Z-fighters go to Goku to solve their problems. He’s typically the only one who can stand up to the ever more powerful villains that seem to want to kill him all the time. And even when he’s not strong enough to take them down, he pushes himself until that becomes possible.

So in the Dragon Ball universe, Goku is pretty much the top tier ass-kicker. Compared to all his companions, he is leaps and bounds above them in power. Even Vegeta, Goku’s rival Saiyan and second-most powerful fighter, always seems to be miles and miles behind Goku.

But I gotta wonder. Is Goku really as strong as the shows make him out to be? Because for the most part. Goku gets huge advantages over his comrades, mainly because he let’s them do all the hard parts, while he sits back and watches from a safe distance. So despite usually being the hero that comes out on top each story arc, he really isn’t all that deserving of it.

Allow me to explain, by going through a large amount of Goku’s battles.

Pilaf:

Goku is captured by him and only breaks loose by turning into a giant ape. Granted he beats Pilaf multiple times in the future, but their first run in he nearly dies by the shrimp.

pilaf ape

Jackie Chun:

Goku loses to him in the World Martial Arts Tournament

General Blue:

Goku fails to actually defeat him. The only things that save him from death are Bulma’s advances on Blue and a collapsing cave.

Mercenary Tau:

Goku gets obliterated, and only lives by a stroke of luck. Sure he beats him later, but only after some hard training.

goku vs tau

Red Ribbon Army:

I’ll give him that one. Though that was like the equivalent of Bruce Lee knocking down a beehive with a bee suit on and armed with bee spray.

goku vs red ribbon

Tien:

Goku loses to him at the World Martial Arts Tournament

goku lose against tien

King Piccolo:

Goku gets beaten up by him a few times, and only barely manages to defeat him in the end, even after going through great lengths to gain a lot of strength.

Piccolo:

Goku barely manages to win this fight in the World Martial Arts Tournament, so I guess he’s not a total wuss. But Piccolo had to fight Krillin and Kami before taking on Goku. While he was able to defeat them easily, they gave him more trouble than expected, thus he had to use up more energy, especially when reversing the Evil Containment Wave.

Goku had to fight Tien, who he beat easily, but with some effort, and then had a nice break against Chi-Chi, who posed no challenge at all. So Piccolo was clearly the more fatigued fighter going into their match.

goku vs piccolo

Raditz:

Goku flat out loses, and only manages to actually help kill Raditz by holding him down while Piccolo deals out the only attack between them powerful enough to kill Raditz. And Goku dies. So yeah. Weak.

goku dying against raditz

Nappa

Goku wins this fight easily, but only because Nappa had been fighting for a very long time, taking many attacks from a whole lot of fighters and using up a lot of energy in the process.

goku beats nappa

Vegeta:

He loses spectacularly. Only with the combined powers of himself, Krillin, Gohan, and Yajirobe, and extreme luck, does Vegeta finally go down.

goku kicked by vegeta

Ginyu Force:

Goku beats Recoome in one shot. Like Nappa, Recoome had taken a lost of abuse and expelled a large amount of energy, so sorry Goku, not that impressive.

Sure he managed to defeat Burter easily enough. But was he really all that strong? They always boasted how fast he was, so he probably wasn’t very strong. So as long as Goku could catch him, knocking him out shouldn’t be too difficult.

Jeice, well, he just seems like a big wuss, and is easily defeated by Vegeta later on, so that just shows Goku’s not so great.

And Captain Ginyu? Goku loses to him without them practically even fighting.

goku after body change

Frieza:

Frieza barely even tries in this fight, and completely obliterates Goku. And this is after Frieza has been fighting for a very long time, getting beat up a whole lot, and transforming three times, something that takes up a whole lot of energy.

Even after turning Super Saiyan, which only happens because the ones who counted on him to protect them die, Goku still barely manages to win, and only does because Frieza’s cut down by his own attack. So his own power could destroy him. Not Goku’s.

And krikey! Goku wasn’t even strong enough to kill him with a final blow. Frieza lived through that, and a planet exploding, while cut in two. So Goku, you don’t impress me.

goku vs frieza

Android 19:

Goku loses. Blame his heart condition all you want. But he fought first, which he hardly ever does, and just couldn’t win.

goku vs android 19

Cell:

Goku fights first and loses. He can’t even beat a Cell Jr.

goku vs cell

Pikkon:

They tie in Other-World Tournament. Jeez, the guy can’t even legitimately beat some no-name dead guy in a filler episode.

goku other world tmt

Yakkon:

So Goku wins this fight. But that’s because Yakkon isn’t all that strong. Like at all. He just hides in the dark, and uses his opponents blindness against them, which obviously means he’s compensating for his lack of strength.

yakkon

Majin Vegeta:

He loses. Sure he was holding back, but that’s his problem.

majin vegeta knocks out goku

Majin Buu:

This one’s a little complicated, as he fights he so many times in different forms.

He draws against fat Buu but later claims he could have beaten him, but wasn’t trying to. Yeah, keep telling yourself that, Goku.

He beats Buu viciously when fused with Vegeta, so that doesn’t count.

And he gets wrecked against Kid Buu, though again claims he could have beaten him if he had gone all out at the start of the fight.

He eventually does beat Buu, only after Vegeta and fat Buu hold him off for him so he could gather energy. But Goku can’t take credit, because the brilliant stategy to beat Buu was orchestrated by Vegeta, the butt-ton of energy required to destroy Buu did not belong to Goku, and he only managed to successfully overpower Buu with said energy after being healed by the eternal dragon. So yeah, not really Goku’s win.

goku vs kid buu

Beerus:

Goku loses. But he puts up the best fight among all the Z-fighters because he hides in the shadows while he watches all his friends get the hell beat out them so he can develop a strategy that he fails to come up with anyway. He also needs the power from five other Saiyans to become a Super Saiyan God to be able to stand up to Beerus, so not his own doing. And he still loses.

And let’s face it. Beerus was only ever hit by Goku because Vegeta punched him so damn hard that it shook up the Egyptian cat so much that he couldn’t focus when it came time to fighting Goku. Also, Beerus wasn’t even trying.

goku vs beerus

Golden Frieza:

He loses. The only hope he had of winning was because Frieza ran out of energy. Before that, he was in big trouble. And he still lost. And he would have died had Whis not saved the day, giving Goku another chance to save the world.

golden frieza vs goku

Frost:

He loses.

goku lost

Hit:

The only reason he does well against Hit is because Vegeta is used as a guinea pig. Watching Vegeta fight him allowed him to learn his Time-Skipping technique, but only after Whis explained it to him. Something Vegeta did not have the luxury of. And Goku still loses.

And Hit kills him immediately in their second fight.

hit vs goku

Goku Black/Zamasu:

He gets repeatedly destroyed by this pair. He actually never even manages to defeat them.

goku black zamasu goku

Bergamo:

Okay, so Goku wins this one. Big deal. They aren’t even in the same league. It’s like a 20-year-old punching a 10-year-old in the face.

goku vs bergamo

Jiren:

Goku fights and beats a lot of fighters in the Tournament of Power, but we’ll just focus on the main antagonist, Jiren. Long story short, Goku loses to him several times.

jiren beats goku

So I covered a lot of his fights, but not nearly all of them. These were mostly some of the bigger, more noteable ones.

The fact is, Goku only wins by joining the fight late, to take on fatigued fighters or else watching others fight first, and usually can only win with help of a handful of others.

So you are a great big wuss Goku!
