My Top 10 PlayStation Games

I’m not going to lie. PlayStation is my least favorite console of all time. Probably because when I was a kid, all the games I had were terrible. We somehow lost all of those games when my family moved, so I guess it wasn’t a total loss. Since then, I have grown my collection with new games, and I’m still not overly impressed. I now have 30 games for the console, and have played 21 of them so far. So of those, here are my top 10.

Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix

Kronos Digital Entertainment/ Eidos Interactive

2001

I tried to play through this game at least 5 times, but always got sidetracked and never finished it. It’s hard as hell, both in combat and puzzle solving. Each time I played I got a bit further before stopping again…darn those commitment issues. I gave up last time because I somehow saved when I walked into a room while getting shot at so every time I load, I die immediately.

Annoying, but still a fun game, and you play as a few sexy protagonists, so that’s always a plus.

SquareSoft/ Square EA

2000

This a pretty good game with a unique combat system that I didn’t really understand, but the story was good and the characters were fun and different. A pretty solid JRPG in any case. The light nods to Chrono Trigger are cool too.

#8

ff7Final Fantasy VII

SquareSoft/ SCEA

1997

This has a great story, awesome characters and decent enough gameplay. I never beat it though. Commitment issues…

#7

mega-man-8-anniversary-edition-playstation-front-coverMega Man 8

Capcom

1997

This is actually probably the worst Mega Man game, but it is still quite a lot of fun. I just wish they did away with the annoying high pitched voice of our hero.

#6

ff9boxFinal Fantasy IX

SquareSoft/ Square EA

2000

This is probably my favorite Final Fantasy of all time. It has a great story, interesting characters and the overall game isn’t overly complicated at all.

#5

x5boxMega Man X5

Capcom

2001

It’s Mega Man X. They are great games. Though this one doesn’t really compare to other games in the series, it’s still highly enjoyable.

#4

x6boxMega Man X6

Capcom

2001

While this is a huge improvement over 5, it is still lacking compared to other titles in the series, but again, it’s still a MMX game, and they are hard to screw up.

#3

rayman-2-the-great-escape-playstation-front-coverRayman 2: The Great Escape

Ubisoft

2000

I don’t even know why this game is so good…it just is. Fun and varied gameplay, great level design and powerups make this a pretty great adventure.

#2

Castlevania_SOTN_PALCastlevania: Symphony of the Night

Konami

1997

This game blew away any expectations I had, easily destroying all previous games in the series up to that point. It felt like playing a Metroid game more than anything, and when you can say that, you know you are in good shape.

Capcom

1997

Yep, my favorite PlayStation game also happens to be my favorite Mega Man X game of all time! This game still had the simplicity of the original 3, but improved upon them greatly. The armor expansions probably give you the coolest abilities up to this point and the gameplay is so refined by now. The series constantly tried to top this and that’s when things turned into over-complicated messes.

My Top 10 NES Games

I never really loved the NES, even when it was the only thing out there. But it did have far better options than anything before it, and among all the crap on the console, there were still a few gems. So let’s take a look at my 10 favorite out of the 32 I own, though I have only played 28 of them so far.

#10

Megaman4_box

Mega Man 4

Capcom

1992

All the Mega Man games feel like the same game to me, but just kept getting better slightly, as if it’s one game with DLC being constantly added to it. I was always excited to see what robots they would come out with next.

Megaman5_box

Mega Man 5

Capcom

1992

Like I said, they just keep getting better.

#8

Megaman6_box

Mega Man 6

Capcom

1994

This is the best one on the NES. I told you, I’m not a huge fan of NES, but the Mega Man series is fantastic.

Kid Icarus

Nintendo

1987

This game is really hard, but also quite satisfying, so that I never really got mad over the countless times I died. The gameplay is just really fun and keeps you wanting more. When you beat it, it’s a great feeling.

#6

Castlevania_II_Simon's_Quest

Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest

Konami

1988

This is a ridiculously impossible to figure out game. But with a walkthrough, it is so much fun and one of my favorite Castlevania games of all time.

#5

zelda-2

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Nintendo

1988

This is another really hard game, but again, quite satisfying. It really is a lot of fun once you get strong enough to hold your own.

#4

Super_Mario_Bros_2

Super Mario Bros 2

Nintendo

1988

Quite a turn from the first game, but man is it fun. A really great platformer.

#3

kirbys_adventure-42565615-42386097-org

Kirby’s Adventure

HAL Labs/ Nintendo

1993

What a unique and fantastic platformer. So much fun…

#2

zelda

The Legend of Zelda

Nintendo

1987

Oh. My. God. This was easily the most ambitious and by far the best game to ever come out at it’s time. It’s a huge game packed with secrets, enemies and items and it just was jaw dropping, and still is really…

Super_Mario_Bros._3_coverart

Super Mario Bros 3

Nintendo

1990

In the way Zelda shattered everything, this game did just as much. It took a classic and improved upon it 100fold. It’s just so big, with so many paths and items. One of the best platformers out there and one of the best games of all time.

And there you have it. My top 10 must haves for the console that started modern gaming.
