My Top 10 NES Games

I never really loved the NES, even when it was the only thing out there. But it did have far better options than anything before it, and among all the crap on the console, there were still a few gems. So let’s take a look at my 10 favorite out of the 32 I own, though I have only played 28 of them so far.

#10

Megaman4_box

Mega Man 4

Capcom

1992

All the Mega Man games feel like the same game to me, but just kept getting better slightly, as if it’s one game with DLC being constantly added to it. I was always excited to see what robots they would come out with next.

#9

Megaman5_box

Mega Man 5

Capcom

1992

Like I said, they just keep getting better.

#8

Megaman6_box

Mega Man 6

Capcom

1994

This is the best one on the NES. I told you, I’m not a huge fan of NES, but the Mega Man series is fantastic.

#7

Kid_Icarus_NES_box_art

Kid Icarus

Nintendo

1987

This game is really hard, but also quite satisfying, so that I never really got mad over the countless times I died. The gameplay is just really fun and keeps you wanting more. When you beat it, it’s a great feeling.

#6

Castlevania_II_Simon's_Quest

Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest

Konami

1988

This is a ridiculously impossible to figure out game. But with a walkthrough, it is so much fun and one of my favorite Castlevania games of all time.

#5

zelda-2

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Nintendo

1988

This is another really hard game, but again, quite satisfying. It really is a lot of fun once you get strong enough to hold your own.

#4

Super_Mario_Bros_2

Super Mario Bros 2

Nintendo

1988

Quite a turn from the first game, but man is it fun. A really great platformer.

#3

kirbys_adventure-42565615-42386097-org

Kirby’s Adventure

HAL Labs/ Nintendo

1993

What a unique and fantastic platformer. So much fun…

#2

zelda

The Legend of Zelda

Nintendo

1987

Oh. My. God. This was easily the most ambitious and by far the best game to ever come out at it’s time. It’s a huge game packed with secrets, enemies and items and it just was jaw dropping, and still is really…

#1

Super_Mario_Bros._3_coverart

Super Mario Bros 3

Nintendo

1990

In the way Zelda shattered everything, this game did just as much. It took a classic and improved upon it 100fold. It’s just so big, with so many paths and items. One of the best platformers out there and one of the best games of all time.

And there you have it. My top 10 must haves for the console that started modern gaming.

Final Fantasy V=Annoying Game

Well, I’m back, here to talk about my experience with Final Fantasy V as I plow my way through most of the series. I’ve already spoken about 1, 2 and 4, and now I’ve got a bit to say about 5 as well.

To start, it’s not a horrible game, but it isn’t very good either. I like the story and the job system was kind of fun, albeit annoying at times. But it made for some fun customization options.

There isn’t too much to say about it that I haven’t already said with all the other games. By now I have realized that all these games have one great flaw. There is just so much annoying crap in them that it makes them very difficult to fully enjoy. This one is no exception. So I am going to single out what really made this game annoying.

That would be the last area in the game…

As per all the games, this place is loaded with difficult monsters that would love nothing more than to kill you most savagely. That’s not the real problem though. The problem is is that these monsters prefer you to be a zombie, a rock or a frog before they kill you. This is the most obnoxious thing about this game. Every monster seems to have the ability to turn you into one of these things. And the dungeon is very long, so you are constantly having to cure yourself of these ailments.

The rock and frog status isn’t horrible, for you can cure them with the Esuna spell, but it gets pretty taxing on your MP, so thank God I just happened to stock up on the curative items, Soft (cures rock) and Maidens’ Kiss (cures frog) throughout the whole game so that I had a crap ton to heal with. I stocked up on these because the last three games taught me that they would most likely come up to annoy the hell out of me, and I was right. But what I had not counted on was the newer zombie ailment. This can’t be cured by any spell other than using a cottage on a save point or sleeping at an inn. The only item that can cure it is Holy Water. I unfortunately did not stock up on these, so I only had 4 on me that I happened to find in chests.

So I painstakingly fight my way to the final boss, only to find that he loves using some spell that does a ton of damage to you, but worse, puts a random status effect on all characters. This is just great, for my first time through, I had used up all my Holy Waters, thus any characters that were zombified had to stay like that. And if you don’t know, this is a serious problem. A zombie character is basically dead, so you lose their attacks against the boss, but they don’t actually die, they instead attack you. And you or the enemy can’t kill them, they will be there forever. You can’t heal them if you don’t have Holy Water, so you are completely screwed and might as well reset the game at this point, because you won’t beat the boss.

So going through from where ever the last save point was, I made sure to keep my 4 Holy Waters. This meant that every time I was turned into a zombie I had to reset the game and try again. After like four tries, I finally made it to the boss and was able to cure all characters that turned into zombies.

This is a needless annoyance. What if I didn’t have any Holy Waters? I would have had to fight my way back out of the dungeon and then buy a bunch of them, and then redo the entire final area all over again! And that is something that just should not happen! Why do all of these games just have annoying, time consuming issues? This doesn’t make the game anymore challenging, it’s just cheap and unfair, stupid and a waste of time. The challenge in a game should not come from such cheap tricks. They are on their fifth game and they still have yet to figure that out!! They wouldn’t be such bad games, but my God! It eventually just gets so irritating that I may or may not look like this…angry.person

And one more thing that is super annoying in this game is the time it takes to bring up the menu. It takes about three seconds. This doesn’t sound like very long, but dear God, when your sitting there just waiting, it seems like much longer.  It takes a tad longer to exit the menu too. So it becomes very annoying.

But the dumbest thing of all about this game is the enemy counterattacks. This is nothing new in the series. Some enemies can counter any of your attacks with either spells or physical attacks. The counterattack would occur immediately after your attack. But not in this game. They would counter whenever they feel like it. And some of these counterattacks are devastating. In the older games, you could react by holding off on an attack or healing someone who was countered, but those simple strategies become obsolete in this game. They will randomly deploy their counterattacks in FF5. So say your guy hits an enemy that counters, you wait a bit, but he does not counter, so you attack again, still nothing, and then again. You’ve done 3 hits to the guy, but one of your characters hits twice in one attack, so that’s four hits to the enemy. After those four hits, he decides to counter with four attacks of his own…one for each hit he took. He will then use his normal attack as well. So that’s five hits coming at you at once. If the counter hits all your characters, there is an extremely high chance you will all die. If it a single person attack, he will likely take out 2 or 3 of your characters.

There seems to be no pattern to when they counter, it is just completely random, and many times have I died due to this horrible flaw.

Would I recommend this game to anyone?

Final Fantasy II-Now That’s More Like It

I recently ranted about the original Final Fantasy. Now I just would like to take a few minutes to talk about Final Fantasy II.

final_fantasy_origins_final_fantasy_ii_battle

Oh my god…what an improvement. The game literally took everything I complained about with the first and fixed it. This is a game I can see people liking and spawning dozens of sequels from.

Not to mention, it added a whole lot of unique qualities not often seen in RPG’s such as every character being able to use any weapon or spell. The leveling system is different too, having to constantly use spells and attacks to upgrade magic and weapon skills, as well as your base stats. It’s the only game in recent memory that I was excited when I got hit by things, because that meant you were that much closer to increasing your defense and hit points.

The only gripe I have with this system is it takes way too long to level up some things. Hit points go up easy enough, but your magic points take forever, as well as spells and weapon skills. The max you can get any of these skills to is 16, but you won’t get anywhere near that. I completed the game with only one kind of high spell…Cure at level 10, and that’s because you have to use it all the time. My weapons skills were level 10 as well.

ffii_arrows3_ps

The game doesn’t make you grind all that much, which is a wonderful thing. I really hate the games that make you grind for hours. This does it very balanced, until the last dungeon. My god is it hard. I was always strong enough to get through any dungeon without too much difficulty throughout the entire game, but then you get to hell or whatever and you find yourself very underpowered.

But the best part about that is you just fight some enemies there, they beat the hell out of you and you become stronger, so I was able to progress somewhat fast regardless, and by the time I made it to the last boss, none of the enemies gave me a hard time anymore. But if you want to get to the last boss, you better set aside a few free hours. I mean, holy crap!! You have to go through a tough and lengthy cave of hell and when you finally get through that, bruised and bleeding, you find yourself in an entire castle you have to climb now, nearly twice as big as the already lengthy cave. It takes forever to get to the boss! Fortunately it was my day off and I could sit there for a long time to beat it.

That is the problem with both these games. The points in between saves are wayyy to long. Throughout the week, I really only play for 20 minutes at a time. I constantly had to shut off the game in the middle of a dungeon, or just leave it on until I had time to complete it. It’s so annoying! And if you die, you are screwed. It’s ridiculous. You have to start all over again. Thank god for the inclusion of memo saves in Origins for PlayStation or I would never have the patience to play these games.

Overall, Final Fantasy is a piece of crap, but Final Fantasy II is great. Now I am on to Final Fantasy IV!

The Console Wars: The Ultimate Winner

Well I can’t think of anything fun to make a console war about, so I guess it is finally time to end my Console War series. Today I will be simply adding up all the place numbers for each console throughout every one of my posts in the series. Then I will rank them from highest number to lowest number, the lowest number meaning the best ranked sum. So like golf basically.

This is no game, this will really see what is the greatest console of all time, as far as being ranked by abstract things are concerned anyway.  I will be writing a number after each console name. This number reflects its total score from all the other wars I’ve done.Well here they are, the 22 biggest consoles ever made, in ranking order from worst to best.

#22 Atari 5200-94

Top 10 Appearances-0

Best Rank-12th

Worst Rank-21st

Image result for atari 5200

This is the worst console ever, but only out of the best 22, so that’s at least one good thing to say about it. It’s name was ranked 19th, controller 21st, appearance 21st, game 21st, and price 12th.

#21 Atari 2600-83

Top 10 Appearances-1

Best Rank-8th

Worst Rank-22nd

The oldest console on the list. It’s name ranked 15th, controller 19th, appearance 22nd, game 19th, and price 8th.

#20 Atari 7800-80

Top 10 Appearances-1 (Price Champion)

Best Rank-1st

Worst Rank-21st

Image result for atari 7800

Rough time for Atari, though it’s age and the market of video games during that age make these consoles really not stand a chance compared to today. It’s name ranked 21st, controller 20th, appearance 18th, game 20th and price 1st. Let’s hear it for the lowest priced console! That is something this one should be proud of!

#19 Sega Saturn-69

Top 10 Appearances-1

Best Rank-8th

Worst Rank-20th

Image result for sega saturn

Widely considered Sega’s biggest failure. It’s name ranked 8th, controller 13th, appearance 10th, game 18th and price 20th.

#18 Atari Jaguar-66

Top 10 Appearances-1

Best Rank-9th

Worst Rank-22nd

Atari’s last console and highest ranked console. It’s name ranked 9th, controller 22nd, appearance 11th, game 13th and price 11th.

#17 Sega Master System-63

Top 10 Appearances-2

Best Rank-7th

Worst Rank-17th

Sega’s first console. It’s named ranked 7th, controller 17th, appearance 16th, game 14th and price 9th.

#16 Xbox One-62

Top 10 Appearances-2

Best Rank-3rd

Worst Rank-21st

Image result for xbox one

Microsoft’s latest console is the first to appear on this list, just one point ahead of the SMS. It’s name is ranked 16th, controller 7th, appearance 3rd, game 15th, and price 21st.

#15 PlayStation-61

Top 10 Appearances-2 (Name Champion)

Best Rank-1st

Worst Rank-20th

Sony’s first console is the first to appear on the list, just one point ahead of the XB1. Close competition! It’s name ranked 1st, controller 15th, appearance 20th, game 9th, and price 16th.

The next two consoles are tied. I will instead choose their rankings by how many top 10 appearances they’ve had, the one with more getting a better spot on this list obviously.

#14 PlayStation 2-60

Top 10 Appearances-1

Best Rank-7th

Worst Rank-15th

Image result for playstation 2

Following right after its big brother, the PS2’s name ranked 12th, controller 11th, appearance 15th, game 7th and price 15th.

#13 Nintendo Entertainment System-60

Top 10 Appearances-2

Best Rank-4th

Worst Rank-17th

Image result for nes

Just barely scraping the 13th spot after the PS2 is Nintendo’s first major console and first on this list. The NES’ name ranked 4th, controller 16th, appearance 17th, game 16th and price 7th. It’s 2 top 10 ranks over the PS2’s 1 give it the better spot.

#12 PlayStation 4-55

Top 10 Appearances-3

Best Rank-3rd

Worst Rank-20th

Sony’s latest console’s total score breaks the close 1 point difference cycle that seemed to develop for the last few consoles. It’s name ranked 20th, controller 5th, appearance 8th, game 3rd and price 19th.

The next three consoles are tied. I ranked them by most top 10 appearances.

#11 Sega Genesis-54

Top 10 Appearances-2

Best Rank-2nd

Worst Rank-18th

Image result for sega genesis

Sega’s second console is the third to appear on the list so far. It only beat the next ranked console in two wars out of the five, which is why it is the worst ranked out of the three. It’s name ranked 5th, controller 18th, appearance 12th, game 17th, and price 2nd.

#10 PlayStation 3-54

Top 10 Appearances-3 (Appearance Champion)

Best Rank-1st

Worst Rank-22nd

Image result for ps3

Sony’s third console ranks highest out of it’s four, the PS3 just beating it’s younger brother by 1 point. It’s name ranked 17th, controller 10th, appearance 1st, game 4th, and price 22nd.

#9 Super Nintendo Entertainment System-54

Top 10 Appearances-4

Best Rank-6th

Worst Rank-19th

Image result for snes

Nintendo’s second console is the second to appear on this list. It’s name is ranked 10th, controller 9th, appearance 19th, game 10th and price 6th. The fact that it appeared in the top 10 four out of the five wars gets it the highest rank out of the three tied consoles.

#8 Wii U-51

Top 10 Appearances-3 (Controller Champion)

Best Rank-1st

Worst Rank-22nd

Image result for wii u

Nintendo’s soon to be replaced sixth console is the third of seven to appear on this list. It’s named ranked 22nd, controller 1st, appearance 5th, game 6th, and price 17th.

#7 Nintendo 64-48

Top 10 Appearances-2

Best Rank-2nd

Worst Rank-14th

Image result for n64

Nintendo’s third console is the fourth of seven to appear. It’s name ranked 14th, controller 14th, appearance 13th, game 2nd, and price 5th.

The next three consoles are again tied. I ranked them by top 10 appearances, but numbers 5 and 4 tied with those, so I ranked them by which console placed better in each of the 5 wars.

#6 Nintendo Switch-47

Top 10 Appearances-2

Best Rank-3rd

Worst Rank-13th

Image result for nintendo switch

Pretty darn good for a console that isn’t even out yet. This tied with the next two consoles, but had the least amount of top 10 appearances, thus the lowest rank. It’s name ranked 11th, controller 3rd, appearance 9th, game 11th, and price 13th.

#5 Xbox 360-47

Top 10 Appearances-3 (Game Champion)

Best Rank-1st

Worst Rank-18th

Image result for xbox 360

Microsoft’s sophomore console is the second to appear on this list. It’s name ranked 13th, controller 8th, appearance 7th, game 1st and price 18th. This console had more top 10 appearances than the Switch, but tied with the next console on the list. The 360 received a worse ranking because the next console ranked higher in 3 out of 5 of the wars.

#4 Dreamcast-47

Top 10 Appearances-3

Best Rank-3rd

Worst Rank-22nd

Dreamcast

Sega’s final console was considered ahead of its time. It’s very impressive rank on this list might prove it. It’s name ranked 3rd, controller 4th, appearance 14th, game 22nd, and price 4th. It tied with Switch and 360, but had more top 10 appearances than Switch, and beat 360 in 3 out of the 5 wars.

#3 Xbox-46

Top 10 Appearances-3

Best Rank-6th

Worst Rank-14th

Just managing to scrape the top 3 is Microsoft’s first console. It’s name ranked 6th, controller 12th, appearance 6th, game 8th and price 14th.

#2 Wii-44

Top 10 Appearances-3

Best Rank-2nd

Worst Rank-18th

Image result for wii

Nintendo’s fifth console takes the number 2 spot! It’s name ranked 18th, controller 2nd, appearance 2nd, game 12th, and price 10th.

AND THE BEST CONSOLE OF ALL TIME IS…

#1 Gamecube-20

Top 10 Appearances-5

Best Rank-2nd

Worst Rank-6th

Image result for gamecube

The Gamecube doesn’t just win, but it wins by a mile! It’s total score is less than half of second place. It’s name ranked 2nd, controller 6th, appearance 4th, game 5th, and price 3rd.

There you have it! The best 22 consoles ever made have clashed 5 times, and these are the results! The true champions have emerged!

The Console Wars: Names

I have been thinking back on all the names video game consoles have had, and I have been completely underwhelmed with nearly all of them. So, I thought it would be fun to rank them from worst to best. As there are quite a few consoles, I am only going to list the big brands that have popped up over the decades, Atari, Nintendo, Sega, Sony and Microsoft and only their main home consoles. Nevertheless, there are plenty to talk about, so let’s go!

Fun fact- All Nintendo consoles are in red text, Atari in orange, Sony in black, Sega in blue, and Microsoft in green…How fun!

#22 Wii U Image result for wii u

I remember when they first started talking about this console, but before they announced the name, I was thrilled to stop having to call Nintendo’s most current console “Wii.” Imagine my disappointment when they revealed another letter to an already horrible name… Though the name does serve a purpose, implying “we all can play,” or “you can play.” It still is terrible, and the worst name on this list.

#21 Atari 7800

Image result for atari 7800

What the heck Atari? This isn’t even remotely easy to say. 9 syllables the way I say it. Who wants to puke that out? Wii U at least is super fast and easy to say. I guess 7800 is where Atari draw the line with these weird numbers. The Atari 10400 for their next console would just be too much. This name was probably why the console did very poorly.

#20 PlayStation 4

Image result for playstation 4

Really? PS4? You guys are so lazy that you just keep adding numbers to your system names? While this saves on confusing everyone I guess, making it well known that this is an updated system, but crikey it just makes their systems seem so less exciting. Instead of a new system, you always feel like you are getting a really expensive update on something you already spent a ton of money on, and the games are all useless now though. Even the controllers are always more or less the same, as well as the central theme of each system. The worst part is, it’s too late to go back, they have to keep numbering them. It would just be stupid now to stop numbering them. I can’t wait for PlayStation 12!

#19 Atari 5200

Image result for atari 5200

This is just a mouthful to say. I don’t know why they doubled the numbers from their last poorly named system. Was everything double the power, double the fun?

#18 Wii

Image result for wii

This means “we all can play.” It was a clever name I guess, representing the central theme of what the console was all about, but it took me like a year to get used to saying, “Hey guys, let’s go to my house and play my Wii!”

#17 PlayStation 3

Image result for playstation 3

I already said how lazy Sony was with the PS4 name, but when this came out, I lost all hope of them trying to be a bit creative, so by the time PS4 came out, nobody was surprised by the name.

#16 Xbox One

Image result for xbox one

First they jump to a very high number, then they regress back all the way to the number 1? I guess it is supposed to mean something like “all of your entertainment rolled into one” since it does so much cool stuff. But jeez, between this, Wii U and PS4, it is by far the worst named console generation of all time.

#15 Atari 2600

Image result for atari 2600

We all wonder what these numbers mean. Little did we know that this was only the beginning of long nonsensical names for Atari.

#14 Nintendo 64

Image result for n 64

Now this is a lazy name if I ever saw one, (next to all the PlayStation consoles besides the first). The only reason this is this high on the list is because it was a smart marketing idea when this came out back in 1996 during the whole “bit wars” era. Sega and Nintendo fans clashed about bits all the time, so to name a console after how many bits it had was pretty genius, so kids could rub it in Sega fans faces.

#13 Xbox 360

Image result for xbox 360

What the heck does that mean? Does it imply gaming has come full circle? If so, how? Was it HD graphics? The only circle I recall from this console is the “red ring of death.”

#12 PlayStation 2

Image result for playstation 2

Okay, as we get into the top 12, I can say these are all good names. PlayStation 2 was an okay name, hence it being number 12 in the top 12. It just let everyone know the successor to the hugely popular PlayStation had come to town. PS2 also had the advantage of being unable to drive the numbering consoles thing into the ground.

#11 Nintendo Switch

Image result for nintendo switch

The name makes sense, since you can basically switch from playing on the TV to playing it outside like a handheld in a flash, but I just feel like it’s kind of a lazy name. Though since it is original and doesn’t have any weird numbers or letters after it, it gets a fairly high ranking.

#10 Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Image result for super nintendo

Talk about long names. Luckily SNES or Super Nintendo were enough for people to realize what you were talking about. After the NES changed gaming forever, when something new came out with the same name, but with “Super” in front of it, it really was impressive, not to mention crapping your own pants exciting. Even now, “Super” sounds so much cooler than if it was just called NES 2. It really made you feel like you were playing with power.

#9 Atari Jaguar

Image result for atari jaguar

This is an interesting name. Why is it named after a menacing cat? I have no idea, but after all the other names in the Atari family tree, this one is awesome especially because this would have been the Atari 10,400. There was even a handheld aptly named “Lynx,” to continue the cat theme.

#8 Sega Saturn

Image result for sega saturn

This is obviously named after a planet, and I don’t know why, but it’s just an awesome name. When you say “Sega Saturn,” it just flows so nicely. The canceled “Sega Neptune” was a really cool name too. Kind of makes me wish someone else would name a console after a planet, or a handheld called the “Pluto!”

#7 Sega Master System

Image result for sega master system

This is a good name, telling everyone who the boss is, though it does come across rather cocky, but it had the games to back it up.

#6 Xbox

Image result for xbox

This console was a box with an X on it, so it was named as such. Pretty simple stuff. I don’t know what the X means though…but it is a cool name for a gaming console anyway.

#5 Sega Genesis

Image result for sega genesis

Genesis is defined as “an origin, creation or beginning.” This would have been a great name for Sega’s first console, but hey, it’s still awesome. It ushered in 16-bit gaming and started one of the best console wars of all time. So I guess it grew into it’s name.

#4 Nintendo Entertainment System

Image result for nes

It’s name was somewhat self explanatory. It was a system that brought you entertainment, much more so than anything seen so far at the point of its release.

#3 Sega Dreamcast

Image result for dreamcast

I love this name. I don’t know why, I don’t know what they are implying, but it is awesome nonetheless. It was so far ahead of its time that perhaps it felt like the system “cast you into a dream.”

#2 GameCube

Image result for gamecube

This is the most bad ass name in gaming history. It is a cube (though technically a rectangular prism) and plays games and is named as such. Can’t get more to the point than that. Plus it is oddly fun to say.

#1 PlayStation

Image result for playstation

And here is the best named console of all time. The PlayStation is just like GameCube’s blunt name, it’s a station you play on, but this just sounded cooler. The word station makes you feel like you are not just limited to the console itself, but instead it draws in everything around you somehow. It’s a very colorful word I guess, at least in my mind! It’s not as bad ass as the GameCube, but it’s more of an awe inspiring name.

So there you have it. If the consoles were to have a war for best names, Sony take best name, but I would say the true winner would have to have the most names in the top 10.

So in last place would be Microsoft, Sony and Atari with 1 console each in the top ten.

Nintendo is the runner up with three names.

Sega comes in first with four! That’s right, of the four consoles they have on this list, every single one of them made it into the top 8!

Sega congratulations, you win the Console Name War!

Come check out next week, when the Console War will move on to controllers!
