Dragon Ball Sagas Ranked

With the conclusion of Dragon Ball Super this week, I’m feeling all sad, so I decided to rank all the sagas from all of the series, including GT. Dragon Ball has been one of my favorite things in life since the mid 90’s, so it is exciting to write this out and actual figure out my favorite stories and what not.

Note that I love the show primarily for the action, the flashy fights and power ups, and humor. I will not be ranking them by story, for in this show, it’s not all that important, and some are far more fleshed out than others, so it’s hard to compare long stories against short ones.

I will be grouping some of the sagas together to keep the list shorter and make it a bit easier. They will be listed from worst to best.

#20

Emperor Pilaf Saga (Dragon Ball)

pilaf saga

The saga that started it all is understandably the worst. It introduces many of the main characters and is a very typical anime, with tons of little boy wiener and pervy jokes, rather than the intense action that the series is known for. Goku pretty much beats everything in one hit. Not that great, but pretty short.

#19

Black Star Dragon Ball Saga (Dragon Ball GT)

Blackstar_Dragonball_Shenron

This one seems to take influence from the Pilaf saga. Both focus on going around on different adventures each episode, looking for dragon balls. It’s got better action, but barely. And there’s Pan. It probably wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t involved. This and the Pilaf saga are the only two on this list that I can say I don’t like. Though the end of the saga picks up a lot.

#18

First World Tournament (Dragon Ball)

first tourn

This saga really steps up from the first one. We meet Goku’s best friend and rival for the first time, and watch as they train for the martial arts tournament and rise up the ranks.

#17

Red Ribbon Saga (Dragon Ball)

red ribbon saga

Goku is again in search of the Dragon Balls, but this time he takes on an entire army. There are some cool villains and it is fun enough to watch, though it gets a bit dull at times. Very good overall though.

#16

Baby Saga (Dragon Ball GT)

dragon ball baby saga

This is a neat story that brings up the Saiyan race’s past and how that comes to haunt the survivors. Baby is a cool, unique opponent who gives the Z fighters a run for their money.

#15

Second World Tournament (Dragon Ball)

Shen-and-his-students

This is where I really start to love the sagas. The first fight between Yamcha and Tien set the bar for the action that we will see from every saga made after this one. It is a great saga, with lots of intense fights. Really good stuff.

#14

Garlic Jr. Saga (Dragon Ball Z)

DragonBallZ_Garlic_jr_Saga

For this being filler, it is quite phenomenal. For once, the center of attention is in the hands of someone other than Goku. The fights are great and the stakes are high. Very good saga.

#13

Golden Frieza Saga (Dragon Ball Super)

dragon ball Goku_and_Vegeta_vs_Frieza

I was a bit disappointed with this one, for the movie, Ressurection F, I found better. I wasn’t thrilled with the use of Frieza as an enemy again, but it is a blast to watch nonetheless. And I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more if I didn’t see the movie first, for nothing was surprising in this saga because of it. Though to be fair, the movie isĀ  my favorite DB movie ever made.

#12

Super 17 Saga (Dragon Ball GT)

FullPowerEnergyWaveSuper17

This was an interesting villain to use and provided us with some good action and use of characters other than Goku (sort of). This saga really stepped up the GT series in my eyes.

#11

Battle Of Gods Saga (Dragon Ball Super)

fan_made_dragonball_super_battle_of_gods_saga_by_obsolete00-dae2ail

This as well is dampened by releasing a movie first, though this time, the series is better than the movie. This introduces some truly great characters that stick with the entire series, not to mention shows us a whole new scale of how big the world(s) are and how pitiful Goku, with all his might, really is.

#10

Majunior Saga (Dragon Ball)

majunior saga

This shows Goku as an adult beating down the off spring of an old enemy. Both Goku and Majunior rise to the finals in an awesome World Tournament, and give us the best fight in the Dragon Ball series.

#9

King Piccolo Saga (Dragon Ball)

king piccolo saga

This is the first truly menacing villain we see in the entire franchise, and it is awesome to watch. Finally we see Goku get beaten easily (well, for the second time, actually), making us wonder how anyone will ever stop Piccolo from taking over the world. A great saga.

#8

Saiyan Saga (Dragon Ball Z)

dragon ball saiyan saga

The first saga of the new DBZ series really takes it a step beyond Dragon Ball. Impossibly strong villains show us that Goku and friends have a lot of catching up to do. We at long last learn the truth about Goku’s past as well. We are also introduced to his son for the first time.

#7

Universe 6 Tournament (Dragon Ball Super)

universe 6 tourn

This is a lot of fun. This is the first saga that Super gives us that wasn’t a movie, and it’s just awesome. A bunch of new characters are introduced, with amazing powers. The Saiyans also face off against their most dangerous (and coolest) villain to date. Lots of good fights within this tournament. Awesome stuff.

#6

Namek Saga (Dragon Ball Z)

dragonball_cast_namek_saga_by_skarface3k3-d78syo9

This one is really long and drawn out and the famous clash between Goku and Frieza isn’t all that great. But soooooooo much stuff happens in between the first landing on Namek to it’s demise that helped push this up the list. Many great fights, power ups and revelations happen that make this one really cool to watch.

#5

Shadow Dragon Saga (Dragon Ball GT)

shadow dragons

The last and best saga in GT and the last saga fans would get for over a decade. It is really a great saga, with a lot of cool enemies, the return of old ones and the fiercest enemy to ever grace the series up to that point and still after Super, is quite formidable. And he’s cool. This saga has some new surprises in it that make it really fun to watch.

#4

Majin Buu Saga (Dragon Ball Z)

dragon ball majin buu saga

This saga gives us a ton more characters, lots of new surprises, an invincible enemy and just so much more cool stuff. It is a lot of fun to watch, though it drags on like the Namek Saga.

#3

Cell Saga (Dragon Ball Z)

dragon ball cell saga

I am including everything with Future Trunks and the androids in this saga as well. This has some of the best action, some amazing transformations, a great suspenseful story, and the use of mostly every character in the DB universe. It is really awesome. And the Goku vs. Cell fight is my favorite one in the whole DBZ series.

#2

Goku Black Saga (Dragon Ball Super)

dragon_ball_super_saga_black_by_saodvd-daesxzp

This has an interesting, dangerous enemy, with a deeper story than the DB franchise has seen so far. There is a lot of twists and turns that make way for some of the best fights that have been in the franchise so far. The last fights are very different from what we come to expect, which was a cool surprise.

#1

Tournament of Power (Dragon Ball Super)

top

This is what the series is all about. Just awesome action with tons of characters, one episode after another. So many surprises happen during the 48 minutes of fighting, and the fights far surpass anything seen in the franchise. The conclusion is really good. The Goku vs Jiren fight is the best in the franchise, and tops off the end well. Speaking of the ending, it it just fantastic and ends the series on a happy, positive note, much more so than DBZ did, in my opinion.

Well there you have it.

Dragon Ball is something I have watched almost my entire life, and I expect to continue rewatching them for the rest of my life. I love all 4 series. They have brought me so much joy. I just hope they come out with more series’. Super showed that they can still make an amazing show and I want to see more.

Though for the past 3 years or so, I have been looking forward to watching the new DBS episode every week, but now that is gone and I will not be able to handle it for a while…sniff… It’s very sad. At least I have the dubbed versions to look forward too!
