My Most Wanted For Smash Bros Switch

e3 is less than a week away and I couldn’t be more excited, but mostly I am excited for Tuesdays Nintendo online video, where there is sure to be lots of exciting news, none more so than (hopefully) a good deal of information on the new smash bros game.

Many people still seem doubtful that this is a new game, but rather a port of the Wii U/3DS versions, which would be a huge let down after all the hype, so I seriously doubt it is. Plus when they initially announced it, they seemed to go out of their way to title the trailer “Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros” instead of Super Smash Bros for Nintendo switch, which were how the Wii U and 3DS games were titled.

So anyway, there are thousands of characters people want to see appear in these games each time one comes out. Brawl gave me several characters I wanted added (Toon Link, Wolf, Sonic). After that game, anything seemed possible, especially since they added so many newcomers (though I think Little Mac was the only one added that I really wanted in 4…oh and Mega Man…and Shulk…k that one delivered too).

So here are some characters I would love to see…and no…Ridley and King K. Rool are not going to be on this list. I am not opposed to literally any character becoming playable, and honestly I get excited for any newcomer, even if I don’t know who they are, but I would be a tad more excited if these upcoming characters appear.

First and foremost, I would love to see every character that has been cut back in it, which means Snake, Wolf and especially the Ice Climbers, who were only cut because of the limitations of the 3DS. The only ones that don’t need to come back are Young Link, Toon Link is a perfect replacement and Pichu…cuz why?

And now onto the newcomers I would love to see.

Paper Mario (Paper Mario series obviously)

I know, another Mario character, but he would just be so cool. With a ton of partners and sweet special moves to pull from, he could be a whole lot of fun.

 

 

 

 

Dark Samus (Metroid Prime series)

Aside from looking cool, Dark Samus has an impressive array of powers and abilities, some of them demonstrated as an assist trophy in the last game. Now make it fully playable!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Simon Belmont (Castlevania series)

This has been a third party character I’ve wanted for a while. His legacy on NES, his chain and special weapons all make him a great candidate for smash.

 

 

 

 

 

Sora (Kingdom Hearts series)

I love Kingdom Hearts, so to see the main character in one of my favorite games of all time would be magical. Again, he has an enormous move set to pull from to make him a worthy adversary against Nintendo’s finest.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Luigi (Luigi’s Mansion)

Give Luigi a moveset based off his Mansion games. There is no need to have him a partial Mario clone anymore, though I was thrilled his final smash in 4 used the poltergust.

 

 

 

 

 

Sonic and Tails (Sonic series…duh)

Instead of just Sonic, let these two be a team like the Ice Climbers, since in the Genesis games, they functioned in the exact way the Ice Climbers do now.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Viewtiful Joe (game with the same name)

He is from the team that made Viewtiful Joe, so I guess I would rather see Red, for he is actually a Nintendo character. Maybe give him a combination of all the other wonder’s power which would give him a truly awesome moveset.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country Series)

Either as a team with Diddy or stand alone character, I want her.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Zero (Mega Man X series…not the Zero series look)

I would love to have X, Mega Man and Zero all be in it, but hey, Zero would be a cool addition if I had to choose one, after Mega Man, that is.

 

 

 

 

 

 

And those are just some of my more hopefuls that came to mind right off the bat. Paper Mario is my most wanted for sure, ever since leading up to Brawl. Of course there are dozens more I would love to see in it too.

But I will not be disappointed with who they add, as long as there are very little cuts and plenty of additions, I will be thrilled.

Series Ranked: Sonic The Hedgehog

Sonic has been in the spotlight a lot the past few months, and especially now with the recent release of Sonic Mania, and for the first time in a long while, all the buzz about the speedster seems to be very positive. Sonic Mania is even being called by many to be the best Sonic game ever made…quite an impressive feat that no one thought would ever be said in modern times.

To celebrate Sonic’s good fortune, I am here to assemble a list of all Sonic’s games, from worst to best. And by all of them, I mean just the ones I own. There are an awful lot of Sonic games, I mean an awful lot, and I probably don’t even have half of them. I will not be including spin off games like the fantastic Sonic Spinball or Sonic and Sega’s All Star Racing. It’s about his main line games today…for the most part.

Sonic The Hedgehog (PlayStation 3, 2006)

This game had so much potential. New type of storyline, three awesome hedgehogs with their own campaigns, plus playable minor characters and beautiful level designs. But no…it turned out to be a disaster thanks to the development having been rushed, thus we all got stuck with an unfinished product. When you weren’t waiting for the game to load, you were getting game over after game over due to bugs and glitches, such as springs not bouncing you far enough and many other unavoidable death traps. I only beat this game on sheer luck of no glitches happening within a level. I always say, that if the developers were able to put the right amount of time into the game, it would have been one of Sonic’s finest games, not one of the worst.

This is a compilation of some of the crappier Sonic games. It comes with Sonic CD, Sonic The Fighters, Sonic R and a bunch of games on GameGear… Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, Sonic The Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift 2, Tails’ Skypatrol, and Tails Adventure. Though it’s not fair of me to say they are crappy. I only played 2 of them. I beat Sonic the Fighters which is pretty bad and I didn’t ever have time to beat Sonic CD in one sitting and the stage select is terrible, only allowing you to play part of a stage. Gems technically shouldn’t be on this list, but since I didn’t play most of the games here, I figured I’d throw it in as one, instead of listing them separately.

Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut (GameCube, 2003)

This is an updated version of Sega’s ambitious, first 3D Sonic game. It isn’t very good, but it’s a somewhat well put together game. The variety of playable characters makes it diverse and interesting. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and that robot whose name I can’t remember have fine campaigns, but Amy walks unbearably slow, making her story miserable, and the last character, Biggs the Cat is just awful beyond description. Each level you just fish. I think fishing in real life is one of the most boring things a person could do, but it is much worse in a not so good game playing as a fat, retarded cat. I quit the game at this point, because I couldn’t catch the fish in the second or third level, and as far as I know, there is no trick, just wait and hope it bites…just like real fishing!

The coolest feature of this game is the Chao Garden, where you can raise little blue alien things and level them and evolve them into cooler little blue alien things. I never dabbled in this though, so I don’t know too much about it.

Sonic and the Secret Rings (Wii, 2007)

This is another not so good game. Sonic had it rough in the beginning of this generation of consoles it would seem. But it was still an okay game I suppose. It is certainly playable in any case. It was also very different from previous games, so it had that sort of intrigue going for it. The best part about it is a very, very fun multiplayer party game that could rival the Mario Party series.

Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis, 1996)

This was certainly a change of pace for the Sonic series. As the name implies, you are in a very ugly, confusing, 3D world. It is sometimes hard to land on enemies when you are trying to kill them, but besides that, it’s very fun, but not great.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS, 2008)

Sonic tries his hand at an RPG game, and I’ve gotta say, it’s not bad. I mean, it’s nothing spectacular, but you get a whole slew of playable characters, an interesting story, and  good use of the DS touchscreen to use special attacks. And I guess this would be sort of considered a spin off game now that I think about it. Oh well.

Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii, 2009)

If you ever wondered what all your favorite Sonic characters looked like clad in medieval armor and equipped with matching weapons, then this is the game for you. You even get to play as a bunch of them! It actually is pretty fun thanks to it’s unique qualities. There are a lot of awesome animated cut scenes as well. It has the same control scheme as The Secret Rings, but a bit easier to use. I would recommend this to anyone who hasn’t played it.

Sonic Unleashed (Wii, 2008)

You know, making this list has made me realize one thing. Sega really has gone all out in creating new ways to play Sonic, and I must give them huge respect for that. Most of their games are entirely different and completely unique, and whether they are good or not, it is fun just to experience something new.

Sonic Unleashed is no exception, and this one is literally split down the middle between good and bad. The game has two main gameplay styles. The first is running, mostly side scrolling, high speed sections as normal Sonic that are amazing and incredibly fun. It might be the best Sonic gameplay up to the point of this release. It’s that good. Then you turn into a werehog and punch the crap out of things. This kills the flow of the game and is a bit boring and repetitive. Not a bad game overall, though nothing remarkable.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode I

When they announced a continuation of the Genesis titles, picking up where Sonic 3 & Knuckles left off, it was some of the greatest news I have ever heard in my life. When I played it, it was a major disappointment. It did not have the feel of the old games at all. The controls and handling weren’t the same, and the game seemed to lack the speed and fun of the games it was trying to impersonate. And it was shorter than most of them. A total regression, though it was still enjoyable overall.

Sonic Rush (DS, 2005)

This was Sonic’s first adventure on DS and what a thrill it was. Lots of great, high speed, side scrolling action and a new character to play as. Lot of fun, with great music. This is the way Sonic should be.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode II (PlayStation 3, 2012)

Sega seemed to put a lot more effort into this game than episode 1. It is way better, and we had our old buddy Tails tailing us again. It was a bit longer of a game I believe too, and if you had both episodes, you unlocked a short campaign where you play as Metal Sonic. A very enjoyable game, though it’s feel and control scheme was still that of Episode I.

Sonic: Lost World (Wii U, 2013)

This game was sort of reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy for you could jump and walk around all sorts of floating lands and the like. It had a nice mix of 3D and 2D gameplay and both styles are fun. There are some very funny moments in the story; one line made me laugh hysterically. The game is a bit too easy, but quite enjoyable nonetheless. Yet another unique experience for the blue blur.

Sonic Colors (Wii, 2010)

When this came out, it was the first undisputed good 3D Sonic game to come out in years. Sticking to mostly 2D gameplay with plenty of speed parts and slower platforming parts, it is a joy to play from beginning to end. The Wisp power ups are diverse and fun to use, and the whole carnival in space setting is quite awesome.

But I remember loving it. Every level was so much fun. This was the best handheld Sonic game I ever played and still is. I think…

The modern handheld Sonic meets up with old school Sonic to save the world. You get to race through levels of old, as well as levels from more recent handheld games. It is a lot of fun, taking the best of both genres and mashing them into one incredible game.

I know this is technically the same game, but it is not at all. The story is the same. Modern Sonic and old Sonic team up. But this time it is the modern Sonic from home consoles and you play through different levels than the 3DS version, taking them from console Sonic games and different Genesis games instead. It is a truly great game that plays and feels like the Genesis games when playing as old Sonic, something Sonic 4 failed miserably at. The 3D Sonic levels are remastered and some of the most fun you’ll ever have playing a 3D Sonic game.

Sonic & Knuckles (Genesis, 1994)

As a very young child, I probably played this one the most, but could never come close to beating it. I finally did for the first time probably as an early teenager. This game had the most fun and creative levels, some of the best music, the best cover art, best boss fights and the best addition ever, Knuckles. He has different abilities than Sonic and Tails, which makes for some more fun gameplay. He is way cooler than Sonic and Tails and was my favorite character in the franchise until Shadow came along, which ironically, I always wanted to see a black Sonic ever since I saw the cover art of this game.

This game coincides with Sonic 3, for they were meant to be one game, but was much too big. So instead they made Sonic &  Knuckles the coolest cartridge ever and made it so you can connect Sonic 2 & 3 into the top to allow you to play Knuckles in those games. This game also had a very good storyline for a completely nonverbal game.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (GameCube, 2002)

This game is incredible. A good story told out through 2 campaigns with 3 playable characters in each campaign, each with unique missions to complete. On top of that was the fact that each level had 5 Sonic Emblems to earn by completing various challenges, which gave huge replay value to the game.

A whole slew of awesome upgrades to each character enhanced the gameplay a lot, as well as the new, intriguing characters added to the game. The gameplay is a lot of fun for each character as you travel through amazingly designed stages with awesome music. Each character even has their own style of music for each of their levels.

There is some fun multiplayer too, though nothing mind blowing.

The most time consuming thing is the Chao Garderns. Unlike the first game, I put hours upon hours into growing my Chaos. It is so addictive. I never got bored of replaying the levels to find power-ups for the lil’ buggers. When you beefed them up enough, there are countless events they can participate in against other very strong Chaos. It’s fun. I couldn’t stop playing this game. But eventually a busier lifestyle and new systems and games to play forced me to put a stop to it. If I didn’t have a massive backlog of games, you can bet I would go back to this game.

The reason I say “hard to say” next to Times Beaten is because I’ve played through each level countless times, though only did the full story mode twice.

 

And that’s it! I have a handful of Sonic games in my aforementioned backlog, so I will update this list as I get to them. Who knows what the future will hold for Sonic, but for right now, it looks pretty good.

Final Fantasy VI: One of the Greatest Games of All Time?

Continuing on with my marathon of Final Fantasy, I have just beaten number 6 and thought it also worthy to comment on.

For most of my life, I have heard that this is one of the best games of all time, and most people claim this one or Final Fantasy VII as the best in the series. Sure enough, if you look at best games of all time lists, FFVI will likely be at least in the top 20, and for best SNES game lists (as Final Fantasy 3), it will be in the top 5, if not the top 3.

So, you would think I would go into this game with incredibly high expectations. But don’t worry, I treated this like most any movie or game I play…meaning I went in with no expectations…well if anything, they were probably a little low judging by what I think of all the games prior.

What I found was that I was right in not expecting much. The game is mediocre, like the rest of them, and I certainly wouldn’t put it anywhere near “best games of anything.” And yeah, VII is way better. And VII isn’t even my favorite.

But that is not to say that this game was bad though. It was just okay. First let me mention what the game does well.

All the games prior to this one followed a basic format. Walk around on the world map, go to towns, then to some dungeon or cave or castle, fight stuff and kill something or find something, rinse and repeat. While this game does that as well, it doesn’t feel like it. All the environments are very varied and fun to traverse through. The environments just look great and don’t give the game a boring, repetitive feel like some of the others did. In terms of scenery and setting, yes this game is by far the best out of the first 6 games.

They also relaxed a bit on random encounters, making it bearable to walk around in this game. This is a huge plus for me. And what’s more, they even let up on the unbelievably annoying, and seemingly constant status effects. So, in other words, the gameplay is the best I’ve seen so far as well, well except for maybe FF4.

Honestly, through most of the game, it is pretty fun and a solid game overall. I like how the story dictated what characters you could use about half of the time, instead of just picking four of the 14 possible characters and just using them throughout the entire game like a lot of RPG’s do. The story itself started out interesting, but then it just kind of stopped halfway through the game and turned out to be not so great.

I like how every character could learn any spell by equipping the summons. That was a nice touch.

The best addition to this game is the fact that you keep all your experience if you die. You will start at the last time you saved like all the other games, but this time you kept all that hard earned experience, making it easier to ensure you aren’t always underleveled.

So yeah, not a terrible game. But here is what kind of ruined it for me. Instead of having annoying status effects all the time, this game loved putting in enemies that would counterattack after you killed them. This became quite annoying, as these counters were generally very strong. There is even one part where you only have one character in your party, and when you kill a certain enemy, it countered by casting a spell that turns you into stone. In other words, that’s an instant game over. That is just cheap and/or horrible game design! You shouldn’t be able to find yourself in that kind of situation! And towards the end of the game there are enemies that when killed, instantly kill one of your party members. Why? You just wind up running from them, because you typically fight two of them along with another enemy. It is not worth using the items or magic it cost to revive two characters that are guaranteed to die. This should not be in the game. It doesn’t bring any challenge to the game, it is just an annoying, cheap, unfair way of inconveniencing the player. But you can’t have a Final Fantasy game without those factors involved, it seems!

 

And speaking of death after battle, there is a spell that puts a timer on one of your characters, usually about 30 seconds. When it drops to 0, that person is dead. But you would think that when you defeated all the enemies in that battle that the counter would stop. But no, it doesn’t. After killing the enemies, the amount of gold, experience and any items you get all show up one at a time, and that counter is still going, so if you take too long to read your rewards or if the counter is very low at the end of the battle, you can count on having to revive the character after the battle.

Another issue with this game is the frame rate during battles. It just randomly slows down badly, often messing up my timing and so many times I’ve used the wrong attack or targeted the wrong thing because the game was too busy sucking to register my button inputs.

But all that is tolerable. What really killed me was the end of the game. As a child, in every RPG, I would switch out all the characters and level them all equally, only to find that towards the end, I was horribly underleveled and had to grind four characters to make them adequate enough to beat the game. So after falling into this trap a whole lot of times, I learned to just pick four characters from the get go, and things got a whole lot easier. It turns out, for FF6, I would have been better off playing this game as a child. For the last area of the game, without any warning or chance to back out and prepare, you have to choose 12 of the 14 characters and split them up into three groups. Most of the characters were within 5 levels of each other thanks to the story having you always using different characters, but most of the time I used the same 4, who were much, much, much stronger than the rest. So now I had to divide them up to carry my weaker members. But I didn’t know this was going to happen, so everyone had crappy gear, didn’t know many useful spells, and were slightly underleveled. I also never got a chance to buy a bunch of items to keep me alive.

So what did I have to do? I had to unequip all the characters I wasn’t using and equip the group I was using with the best possible stuff I had. Thank goodness I never sold any equipment, for some members were stuck with old crappy weapons, but this was better than having none at all.

To make matters worse, the strength of your enemies seemed to have tripled. These fights would have been easy with my A-Team, but now they were downright difficult. The game doesn’t give you enough magic points to use any offensive spells, you had to save it all for healing, and I barely had enough to do that. My saving grace throughout the whole game were 3 items that allowed you to equip two weapons and double attack on each round. So yeah, I beat the entire game more or less just using physical attacks. It was cool.

But anyway, after dying a bunch of times, they eventually all grew a few levels thanks to keeping your XP when you die. Once I finally reached the end of one section, I had to unequip all my weapons, armor, relics and summons, so that they would be available for the next group, then painstakingly equip it all on them. So I just kept moving on, fighting a bunch of bosses with my three underleveled/undergeared groups and somehow managed to eventually beat it. I progressed through the game fairly quickly and easily, but I was in the last area for around 4 hours before I conquered it. The worst part is there is a long boring scene before the last boss that you can’t skip. The first time I fought him, I didn’t know what I was doing, because all your characters might have to fight him, so I ended up fighting him with all completely unequipped characters and died immediately. Then I had to watch the long boring scene again, and lose to the boss again. After the second failure, I understood what was going on, and after once again watching the long boring scene, I went all out and beat him. By the end of it, I was sick of the game.

But they had one more great surprise for me at the end. A long…oh my God, how long…boring…seemingly never ending scene. I kid you not, between the ending and the credits, its over 20 minutes long. The credits are terrible even! Instead of the traditional scrolling text, they opted to just show an airship floating around through clouds while occasionally showing a name or two at time. I mean, it is so uninteresting AND SO F-ING LONGGGGG!

And the game suddenly becomes obsessed with this woman you never even see in the game having a baby. Like towards the end, you go into this town you’ve been to a couple times before, and she’s all the people can talk about all of a sudden. Who is she and why should I care? She isn’t important to the story. She doesn’t do anything useful at all. And then when you beat the game, like 3 minutes of the ending scene is dedicated to this woman. Who is she? Is it just supposed to be some weird happy ending, symbolizing that things live on and grow in the aftermath of chaos? It’s just stupid.

So the game is pretty good until the last dungeon. That is the point I am trying to make I suppose.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years Gripes

I’ve already talked about Final Fantasy 1 & 2, so here I am with another installment as I trek through most of the series. Today I will be talking about the 3 part game known as Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for PSP, but more specifically, the third and final game, The After Years.

Final Fantasy IV is a pretty solid game, and really is quite good. I like 2 better, but I have no real complaints about the game. The second game, titled the Interlude, is just a quick 2-3 hour plot filler basically.

Then we come to After Years. It starts off with separate tales starring most of the cast from FFIV, their lengths ranging from 2-3 hours. Most of these are okay, if not a little monotonous. You basically just venture around, doing God knows what while trying to solve the same mystery in each tale. Because they are so short, you will get in monster fights every 3 steps to make sure you really get your fill of fighting. But this is all okay, except for Edward’s tale, the wuss of the game, who is stuck with even weaker soldiers to help fight you through his tale. This is the longest tale probably, and only because it takes forever to kill anything with this weak batch of people.

But anyway, the tales all end in one of two areas, combining all the cast into two separate groups. Once you beat all the tales, you unlock the final tale, (can’t remember what it is officially called). By the time you reach this tale, you are kind of burnt out and are thankful that only another 3 hour segment and the game will be completed.

Well…it was going into this game with that mentality that really made it annoying for me, for the final tale is not short. In fact it is around 20 hours long, which is how long it took me to beat the original game. So combined with all the tales, that’s around 40 hours, which is fine, but I felt tricked that it was so long.

That isn’t even the real issue though. I don’t mind long games at all, as long as the length is through reasonable approaches, like story progression or fun gameplay and the like. This is not the case with the After Years. They just made the game long because they could. There is nothing new and clever at all with this game. It is the same locales from IV, and features the same enemies and bosses.

In short, the game drags on and on, and on, and on, and on, and on. I could type that for hours and if you read it, then you might get a feel of how much the game drags. There isn’t even a well told story, so there is nothing interesting to keep you motivated to beat it. I was just beating it for the sake of beating it.

In the final tale, after doing all sorts of stuff, you go to a new moon and have to trek through a long 14 floors of some tower or something. It might even be longer. After you finally make it through that and you again think you are close to beating the game, you are treated to another 23 floors! Dear god…really?

And again, I stress that this wouldn’t be a problem if it was fun and interesting. It is just a monotonous, never ending adventure. And here is everything I recall that really make these some 37 or more floors even more annoying.

FFIV_PSP_Back_Attack.pngThis is when the monsters randomly sneak up behind you and get in first hits. This also means your characters set in the back row are now in the front and your front row characters are in the back. Characters in the back row are usually there because they have ranged attacks and low armor values. So these back attacks, if the monsters gang up on one of these characters, ensure a speedy death for them.

This wouldn’t be so annoying, except I swear 90% of the random encounters start with back attacks. In fact, they are so often, I eventually switched the rows of my characters so I wouldn’t have to waste time switching their rows mid battle. But guess what? When I did this, the back attacks stopped happening. I rarely got a back attack. So I switched the rows back to normal, and then the back attacks started to happen overly frequent again. WTF!?!?!?!?

In addition to the game being long and dragged out, so are the battles. Even some regular enemies take forever to kill, these battles lasting close to 5 minutes sometimes. And mind you, when you get a random encounter every 1-3 steps, it becomes so tedious and time consuming. That is when the impatience and rage really starts to build. Floor by floor you go, fighting and fighting, unable to escape the relentless attacks. Oh my God, it is annoying!!

And you know what is even longer? The boss battles. Some of these take 10-15 minutes. It is just a marathon of how long you can keep your guys alive while slowly whittling down their health. And to do the most damage, you would use the most powerful spells and attacks, right? But guess what, that is incredibly time consuming as well. The more powerful the attack, the longer the animation is for the attack. Some attacks have an animation of over 10 seconds long. While they look impressive, it just adds to the length of the game horrendously. And just think, you have 5 characters, and sometimes the enemy can have just as much. If everyone involved uses some big attack, that’s like 2 minutes just for one round!

So in short, you get too many random encounters, that take too long to kill using attacks that have animations that are too long, to go through a tower that is too long, to fight a boss that is too long. And when you kill that boss, it takes like 15 seconds for the thing to explode or dissolve away. If this was a good game, you would take satisfaction away from killing it, reveling in it’s elongated destruction. But no… you are so impatient and angry at this point that each extra and unnecessary, tedious second is like someone twisting a knife in your gut.

And let me tell you how many bosses there are in those 40ish floors. Around 30, if not more. All you do in that big long tower or whatever it is is fight bosses. Over and over again. You fight nearly every boss from Final Fantasy 1-6 I’m pretty sure. I’m not even sure if there are any new bosses mixed in there. And to make matters worse, the random encounters become tougher and longer with each floor too! They eventually become all bosses themselves!

Oh yeah, and every time you kill a boss, you have to painstakingly listen to what each of your five characters individually think about that fight. I’m assuming they are thinking to themselves, because they all have nothing to do with each other. It’s like one says, “That was an interesting fight,” then another will say, “That creature had dark powers,” then another says, “It smells like death in here,” then another says “I need new socks.” Who cares? Just shut up and let me take 3 steps so I can fight another monster! This happens after EVERY BOSS!!!

While killing all the demons in hell and traversing through the tower, there are rest points. These usually spawn an entirely unnecessary story sequence which usually consists of two characters talking at night about more or less nothing. The scenes are so boring, so uninformative and so long, that it just all dumps onto the raging impatience of just wanting the putrid game to end. And there are probably about 20 of these scenes too.

And when you FINALLY get to the last boss and beat him, which takes about 30 seconds for him to explode, you think you beat the game right? Nope. Now you have to run from the place you are in, all the while getting in constant encounters with the still dying boss. This part just happens to annoy you further. It dangles the end of the game in front of you, while doing everything that annoyed you for the last 40 hours all at once.

And then when it is finally all over, you are treated to an incredibly long and boring ending. By this time you are so fed up with the game that you just want to see the final screen, save your game and never look at it again. But this never seems to happen, because my god, the ending is so long. The only thing more boring and longer that I can think of are the ending credits to any Assassin’s Creed game.

FF4 is a great game. But stay away from the After Years, because all it will do is shave a few years off your life.

Nintendo Switch-First Impressions

So this past Friday was a pretty relevant day. In case you haven’t heard, Nintendo’s newest console, the home/portable hybrid called Switch was released. Today, I just want to talk about the system itself. What I like and dislike, etc. And I must say, while it is exciting for any company to come out with a new system, it is a whole lot more exciting when it happens to be a Nintendo console, strictly because they offer something different, new and exciting. It gives gamers a chance to experience something they really haven’t before. It isn’t all about graphics. It’s about the experience, about the gameplay. I seem to be in the minority when I say, I buy video games to play them, not look at them.

Any who, let’s get back to talking about the Nintendo Switch.

To start off, I was amazed how small it is. Even though I knew how small it was from videos and such, I was still completely shocked, for it is much smaller in person than you would expect. The whole console is a screen slightly bigger than the screen of the Wii U Gamepad. I’ve actually seen some of the ridiculously large cell phones come close to the size of it. Once you slip on the Joy Con controllers, that adds like 2 inches (if that) to each side. That is your entire console. By far and away the smallest home console ever made. Placing it in the dock, which connects it to your TV, only fattens it up by another inch or two. So the whole console is roughly 9 inches long with the controllers connected, four inches high, and about 2 inches wide. Those are some nice dimensions.

It is welcome news for someone like me, who has an entertainment stand a bit on the small side. I’ve already got a Ps2, PS3, PS4, SNES, N64, 2 Wii’s, Wii U and a DVD Player hooked up to the TV and I’ve more or less run out of space to put anything else in there. The small size of the Switch couldn’t have come at a better time. I can easily fit it anywhere. It makes me pray that every console in the future should downsize. While the Switch isn’t the most powerful machine out there, it is mighty impressive how small they made it nonetheless. Microsoft and Sony should follow suit, downsizing the technology before throwing out these clunky machines, only to resell them smaller years later. But those slimmed down versions are monstrous compared to Switch.

Now I just talked about how small the console itself is, but what really is shocking is how small the controller is. And I’m talking about when you slide the Joy Cons on the controller dock to play it like a normal controller. It is this tiny little guy! It took a bit to get used to using it, because the buttons are closer together than normal. But after a minute or so, you get comfortable with it. Even playing with one tiny Joy Con becomes comfortable after a short while.

While there are many ways to play the Switch, my personal favorite is having the console docked to play on the TV and just holding each Joy Con in each hand, without the controller dock. It gives you a satisfying feeling of freedom. Imagine it is like the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, but without the wire tethering them together. You are not restricted to one space like you are using any other controller in the world either. You can rest your arms anywhere, have each hand in different positions and still play normally. This is especially welcome, since I have two cats that love to sit all over me when I play games, thus forcing me to move my controller to an awkward position to play around the cats, or having to adjust them so I can still play. Now, thanks to the freedom of the Joy Cons, I can have my arms where ever I want, and the cats can lay however or where ever they want.

And you know what else is small? The game cartridges. The cases are tiny, smaller even than a PSP game, or thinner, but taller than a 3Ds game case. And the actual cartridge is about half the size of a 3DS cartridge!

Now I haven’t had too much time to play around with the Switch, but I will talk about what I’ve noticed once the system is on.

Firstly, just connecting it was a problem because the included HDMI cord is too small. It’s about maybe three feet long, but when you have to weave the thing all over the place, it ended up being a few inches short.

So what’s it like when you turn it on? Right off, I don’t like how they set up the app selection in the main menu of the console. It is now like the PS4 or 3DS where everything is just lined up in one long line. I know in the 3DS you can change this to have multiple apps appear on screen in 4×4 blocks or more. I don’t know if you can do it on PS4 or not, but it’s really annoying to have to scroll through 20 different things to find an app or game you haven’t used in a while. I loved the method the Wii U and Wii used. There was like 16 apps or so on the screen. One button scrolled to the next page, where 16 more things would show up. I have a lot of digital games on my Wii U, and they are all confined to 3 or 4 pages. That’s close to 100 apps you can choose from in no time. With the Switch, it looks like you would have to scroll through each one, one by one until you find what you are looking for. I despise doing it in PS4, and I will here. You may be able to change this though, I haven’t looked into it yet.

Another thing that bothered me is there is no music in the main menu or on the eShop. The eShop itself is rather pitiful. You only have the option of buying 9 games, but hey it’s brand new, so I expect both the menu and especially the eShop to drastically improve once more games and updates come out.

Now speaking of games, how did the Switch do with launch titles? Well, I’ve got to say, it’s terrible. Zelda is the best launch title you could hope for, but other than that, there is nothing particularly a must have. There isn’t really anything at all. 1,2 Switch looks pretty cool, but the other games aren’t really my cup of tea, so whatever. What makes it worse, is Zelda isn’t even actually a true Switch title. It’s just a more advanced version of a Wii U game that was supposed to release almost 2 years ago! What were they doing this whole time? We’ve been hearing about the code name NX for like four years! They couldn’t make some good games for it by launch?

Lack of launch games don’t really bother me though. Games will come and when they do, I’ll get them. I don’t need to have everything right out of the gate, but it’s important to most people, so I thought I’d mention it.

But speaking of launch titles, this whole argument you can find between gamers on the internet with the importance of launch titles really cracks me up. Most anywhere, you will find someone say “I won’t waste $300 on a console with no games. I’ll wait until they come out with more before I buy it.” Or they’ll say things like this… especially pertaining to Wii U, “there aren’t enough games to justify buying the console.”

This argument really makes no sense. I understand what they mean, but it honestly translates to “I can’t waste $300 because it doesn’t come accompanied with 5-10 $60 games I can buy alongside it.” The other example with Wii U translates to “I don’t have money to waste on the console because there isn’t enough money for me to spend on it after I buy it to justify it.”

What sense does that make? If you aren’t going to jump into the console immediately, then yes, it is smarter to wait for a good bundle or price drops in games, but if the argument is you don’t want to waste money, that is just stupid. If you know you are going to buy it eventually and there are games you want, then you might as well get it. But to each his own. I don’t really care what people do, but don’t bash a console for stupid, nonsensical reasons.

Well, I’m getting off topic here. That is everything I have noticed with the short time I’ve used the Switch. It can only get better from here! If you are one of the people who want tons of games, then I would suggest waiting. If you don’t care, then pick one up, you won’t be sorry.

But remember, the more support for a console, especially early on, the more likely more games and support from developers there will be!

The Console Wars: The Ultimate Winner

Well I can’t think of anything fun to make a console war about, so I guess it is finally time to end my Console War series. Today I will be simply adding up all the place numbers for each console throughout every one of my posts in the series. Then I will rank them from highest number to lowest number, the lowest number meaning the best ranked sum. So like golf basically.

This is no game, this will really see what is the greatest console of all time, as far as being ranked by abstract things are concerned anyway.  I will be writing a number after each console name. This number reflects its total score from all the other wars I’ve done.Well here they are, the 22 biggest consoles ever made, in ranking order from worst to best.

The Console Wars: Rating of Best Selling Game

For the next chapter in my Console Wars series, which can be viewed via the links here…I am going to look a little more into sales figures than I would like, though not in the normal way I suppose. Today I will be ranking the best selling game on each console by ratings, the lowest rated to the highest rated. All ratings are taken from the IGN site. Why? Because it’s the site I found that had all these games on it. I used the community rating for a  broader opinion by the people who bought and played these games. In the event of a tied rating, the game with the higher sales will place at a better rank. I also am not counting any games that were included with the system, because that’s sort of cheating. That means no Super Mario Bros or Wii Sports or the like.

Also, I have no idea how accurate the sales figures are I found, and the older systems are definitely shady. But that’s all fine and dandy, because at the end of the day, this is just a meaningless blog by someone who loves gaming enough to write such strange things. This war is based all on figures, my own opinion has nothing to do with any of these rankings.  All ratings are out of 10.

So let’s get started!

Fun fact- All Nintendo consoles are in red text, Atari in orange, Sony in black, Sega in blue, and Microsoft in green…Wowsers!

 

#22 Dreamcast- Sonic Adventure -3.5

Sonic_Adventure.PNGThis game sold 2.42 million copies, a very nice figure considering the poor sales of the Dreamcast. The game was decent for its time and Sonic’s first adventure in full 3D, but it has not aged well at all, making it rather deserving of it’s low rating.

 

 

 

 

#21 Atari 5200- Super Breakout -6.5

This game only sold 102,056 copies. Again, probably not bad for a very poor selling console. I personally have never played it, or even heard of it until now, though chances are I would prefer Sonic Adventure.

food fight.jpgThis is sort of a made up one. It was difficult to find any actual figures, but this seemed to be a fan favorite and did fairly well nonetheless. It is usually in the top 3 best 7800 games too, so it was probably up there in sales.

 

 

 

#19 Atari 2600- Pac Man -7.1

Everyone has played Pac Man at some point in their lives. I have played it on countless consoles, but I think the first time I ever played it was on the 2600. Good times…I think. This particular version of Pac Man sold 7 million copies.

 

 

 

#18 Sega Saturn- Virtua Fighter 2– 7.9

#17 Sega Genesis- Sonic The Hedgehog 2 -7.9

This wonderful game sold 6.03 million copies, a little lower than I thought for one of the best platforming games of all time. I truly have many wonderful memories with this one. Though this game received the same rating as Virtua Fighter 2, it’s higher sales gets this game placed one spot higher.

 

 

 

 

#16 Nintendo Entertainment System- Duck Hunt -8.0

TDuckHuntBox.jpghis is another classic game that I have not played in well over 20 years. It was a lot of fun, and 28 million other people probably think so as well, (well that’s how many people bought it anyway). It was very exciting to see the duck and dog duo again in the latest Smash Bros game too.

 

 

 

#15 Xbox One- Halo 5: Guardians -8.2

halo 5.jpgI haven’t played a Halo game since the second, but it is no surprise this would be at the top of the Xbox best sellers list, with 5 million copies sold. This figure will likely grow much higher over time.

 

 

 

#14 Sega Master System- Phantasy Star – 8.5

phantasy-star-sms-cover-front-1425.jpgThis was a mind blowing game when it first came out, and it is still a whole lot of fun today. I would recommend it to any RPG fan. It definitely deserves its rating, though I could not find a solid figure on sales, this was always prominent in any report about the SMS games.

 

 

 

#13 Atari Jaguar- Alien Vs. Predator -8.6

Alien_vs_Predator_(Jaguar_game).jpgI have never played a Jaguar, so I have never played this version of the game, but if it is the same one I played on PC, then this game absolutely deserves to be on this list. It sold 6.7 million copies, an impressive number for the Jaguar.

 

 

 

#12 Wii- MarioKart Wii -8.7

Mario_Kart_Wii.pngI love this game! It is one of my favorites, if not my favorite in the whole series. With a staggering 36.83 million sales, I believe it is in the top 10 or maybe top 5 highest selling games of all time!

 

 

 

#11 Nintendo Switch- Probably MarioKart something or another, or Smash Bros, Zelda, Mario etc– 8.9

Mario Kart Switch_2.jpgOkay, so this is cheating since this system is not even out yet, but I simply averaged the rating of the other six consoles Nintendo has on this list and it came out to be 8.9, which sounds like a fair number for Nintendo games, if not rather low. MarioKart is always a hit seller, so I’m thinking that would be its number one selling game for sure. I also averaged the sales of all the Nintendo games on this list and came out with 16.76 million sales. That sounds very right if the Switch does well.

#10 Super Nintendo Entertainment System- Super MarioKart -9.0

smc.jpgNow we are getting into the 9’s category, and it works out perfectly for the top 10. This game hasn’t aged well, but it is still pretty fun to play. It sold 8.76 million units back in its day, and MarioKart has continued to slay sales ever since.

 

 

#9 PlayStation- Gran Turismo -9.0

gran turismo.jpgAnother 9.0 game, and another racing game. This had a very high sales figure of 11.15 million, placing it well above Super MarioKart. I have never played this game or any of its many sequels, so I have nothing to say on the matter.

 

 

#8 Xbox- Halo 2– 9.1

halo 2.jpgThe sequel to the wildly popular Halo. I still remember the week leading up to this release. All the kids in school were going absolutely insane, many of them taking the day off on its release. It sold 8.43 million.

 

 

#7 PlayStation 2- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City -9.2

vicecity_ps2boxThis game sold a whopping 17.5 million copies. It is probably my favorite in the series. Still, I was shocked to see this at the top of the sales list.

 

 

 

#6 Wii U- MarioKart 8 -9.3

MarioKart8Boxart.jpgHere we have another MarioKart game, this one selling 8 million, more than half of all the Wii U owners have this game! Wow! This is a really great game, though I would rank it my third or fourth favorite in the entire racing series.

This also completely solidifies my made up MarioKart Switch game taking the top spot in sales for the upcoming system.

 

#5 Gamecube- Super Smash Bros Melee -9.4

Super_Smash_Bros_Melee_box_art.pngI don’t even want to know how many hundreds of hours I spent playing this game. It is still a fun game today, though it hasn’t aged too well. For the time, it was the best game out there, especially when you had all four players going. The game sold 7.09 million.

 

 

 

#4 PlayStation 3- Grand Theft Auto 5 -9.4

gtavps3finaljpg-e937baThis has the same rating as Super Smash Bros Melee, but it has about triple the sales at 21.3 million! I haven’t gotten around to playing this yet, even though I own it, but I am honestly shocked that with all the great games on this console, GTA would be at the top.

 

 

#3 PlayStation 4- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End -9.5

Adobe Photoshop PDFI haven’t gotten around to getting this game yet, though 2.7 million other people have. While I was completely underwhelmed with the first and third game in the series, I absolutely loved the second game and think this one looks amazing too. I can’t wait to play it…I am sure it will live up to it’s high rating!

 

 

#2 Nintendo 64- Super Mario 64 -9.5

Super_Mario_64_box_cover.jpgWhile this is the same rating as Uncharted 4, SM64 has sold 11.89 million copies. I am shocked this game has such a high rating. While it is still fun to play, I think it is one of the worst Mario games ever made. Though it definitely helped shape 3D gaming in a generation where so many companies were failing miserably at it.

#1 Xbox 360- Grand Theft Auto V -9.5

gta5.jpgWell this is sort of anti-climatic. This game has already appeared on this list, but the 360 version has bested all. It has the same rating as the third and second spot, but its impressive 17.79 million sold copies puts this at number 1. I still can’t believe a GTA game made it this high. When I finally get around to playing it, it better be nothing short of a 10 in my book. Though apparently the 360 version is .1 point better.

 

And there you have it! Microsoft takes it’s first number 1 spot!

But to find the real winner, let’s see who had the most in the top 10!

In last is Atari with 0 yet again…

And tied with them is Sega for 0 in the top 10 as well.

After them is Microsoft with two.

Then interestingly enough, we have a tie for the winner. Sony and Nintendo both have four in the top 10. So to break this tie, I will take the average rating of the four titles in the top 10 from each company. Nintendo’s average is 9.3, while Sony’s is 9.2. Wow! That was a close competition for sure, but Nintendo just manages to squeak out a win!
