Resident Evil Series Ranked

With all the buzz going around for the awesome looking Resident Evil 2 remake, I thought it’d be appropriate to rank all the games in the series thus far (the ones I have played anyway). I was going to do this when RE7 came out, but never got around to it.

I’m pretty excited for this game, so it will definitely be fun to take a look back at the long, varied legacy of Resident Evil… so here we go!

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

3DS, 2011

Times Beaten- N/A

This is a pretty fun game, with lots of cool characters and several costumes for each. It gets boring after a while though.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles

Wii, 2007

Times Beaten- 1

This was an interesting game, making fun use of the Wii motion controls. In the sprit of House of the Dead, you replay through the games in an arcade on rails shooter, and even experience some new story elements that they skip over in the main games. It’s not all that great however and is a bit on the annoyingly difficult side at times.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

PlayStation 3, 2012

Times Beaten- 1

This spin off is more like Left 4 Dead. You choose a class and go on a killing rampage. It is intended for online play, but I just played the single player campaign. It’s decent.

Resident Evil Revelations

3DS, 2012

Times Beaten- 1

I wasn’t crazy about this game. It combined the more modern feel of 4 and 5 with the old school way to play and was okay, but left me preferring the full old or modern gameplay. You fought pretty much the same enemy the whole game, and the title confused me. There were no revelations at all, everything just made you have more questions which I assume get answered in the second one. Decent game, but forgettable.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

Wii, 2009

Times Beaten- 1

A much better sequel to Umbrella Chronicles. This just refined everything and the result is that it’s a whole lot more fun. There is more new story elements added as well.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

GameCube, 2003

Times Beaten- 2

A port of the original PS game, this follows Jill during concurrent events with RE2. I didn’t love this game at first, but the second time I played though it, I loved it. Guess it’s an acquired taste or something?

Resident Evil

For the time, this game was outstanding…still is I suppose. I loved it. I played the heck out of it. Trouble is, the save feature didn’t work for whatever reason on my computer so I really kept playing the same parts over and over in maybe an hour, getting a little further in that hour each time. Was awesome, but it got to annoying to even try to complete in one sitting.

Resident Evil 2

Nintendo 64, 1999/ GameCube, 2003

Times Beaten- 2 on N64, 2 or 3 on GC

This took everything amazing about the first game and just improved on it. Nuff said.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X

GameCube, 2003

Times Beaten- 2

This game is just kooky and awesome. The characters and story are set apart from the main series, but it is highly interesting.

Resident Evil 4

GameCube, 2005

Times Beaten- Around 4

I was nervous when they announced this game and said they were changing up the formula I had grown to love so much. But that worry immediately dissolved upon playing it. This was a breath of fresh air for the series. It’s intense action and fast pace coupled with a new and interesting storyline made this something truly great.

This took an already amazing game and updated it to make it even better.

Resident Evil 5

Times Beaten- 3

This took the gameplay of 4 and made it better. The added real time inventory management is a great addition and the story is one of the best in the whole series. Just don’t give any ammo to your partner.

Resident Evil

This is the game that truly made me fall in love with the series. It’s one of the best remakes ever and with all the updates to it, one can finally experience the game that started it all the way it was meant to be.

This is Resident Evil at it’s finest. Tense gameplay, unique/bizarre story, awesome areas to explore, and the dual character addition I just really enjoyed. Not to mention Billy is one of my favorite characters in the whole series.

Resident Evil 6

I enjoyed almost every second of this game. A bigger story told through a variety of characters was a great idea. As for gameplay, they did a great job combining the feel of the old and modern games, plus adding a fresh feel to it on top of it in a way far more successfully than Revelations did. This is one of the very, very few games I was sad when I beat it.

 

 

Well that’s that. I can’t wait to see where the new one winds up!

Are Improved Graphics Killing Our Imaginations?

As the title suggests, I’ve found myself wondering the past two console generations if the constant improvement in video games is spoiling us. When 3D graphics first came on the scene, everybody was amazed at what they looked like. Suddenly everything was so realistic looking. I remember playing Super Mario 64 for the first time and just being wowed. Every game I played on Nintendo 64 and Playstation seemed to get more real looking with each one. But now when you look back on these games, they are eye sores. I literally have to strain my eyes to make any sense of the blobs of color that are the graphics in that generation.Image result for ocarina of time n64

This is interesting, because I am one of those people who hardly notice any real difference in graphics, no matter how big the jump. I remember when I got a Gamecube, I did not even notice the extremely vast graphical improvement until I went back and played N64 again. Then I was like, “Dear god, these games look horrible!”

More recently, I have gone back to playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl after playing the fourth one on Wii U ever since it came out. I had always thought that Brawl looked amazing, but now it looks terrible. The lack of HD doesn’t help either. What I once thought were beautifully refined images are now just a bunch of polygons with blurry edges.

I just can’t seem to wrap my head around the fact that what we once thought were magnificent, flawless graphics can turn into poorly rendered blotches that you can barely make out. It seriously is blowing my mind right now.

I remember playing this, thinking everything looked amazing and wonderful. The people looked so real as well as the environments you traveled upon. looks a fright now. Every perfect little detail can barely be made out now, if it all. Later renditions of Squall in future games such as Kingdom Hearts have made him out to look more or less the same so that I didn’t even notice the change. But when I saw him again in FF8, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It is even more apparent in the older Final Fantasy VII, where everything that looked so nice now is just a bunch of pyramid like polygons stuck together.

 

 

 

 

 

Similar things can be said for every Resident Evil game as well.

It seems the further we advance in technology, the further we leave our imaginative capabilities behind. We do not need to use our minds as much to develop a good looking picture in our heads, because it is right there on the screen. At long last though, it seems like graphics are hitting sort of a stand still. The jump from PS3 to PS4 for example, was quite minimal compared to the leaps and bounds graphics took between all the other console generations. Now it seems that we are just being spoiled with HD and 4K and frame rate, focusing more on refinement and stabilization than gigantic leaps in looks. Maybe this will give our imaginations a chance to catch up.

We obviously think everything looks great because at the time, N64 or Playstation were the best things visuals could offer us, we had not been trained in real power and graphics. We didn’t know better. But something feels dangerous about the way everything we thought looked great really is just a pile of crap. It’s almost like a new system is like a beautiful girl, with plenty of makeup to make her look absolutely stunning. You obsess over her beauty for a few years and then you see her without makeup, what she really looks like, and you’re like “How in the world did I ever find her attractive?”Image result for comparison of women with makeup vs without

This applies not only to video games, but movies as well. I remember being blown away by the special effects in movies when they first came out, but if I go back and watch them now, it’s like “Oh my gosh, that looks so fake, how could they ever put this into a movie!?”

I don’t know, perhaps I am thinking about this too much…
