More Stupid Things Nearly Every Driver Does…

This post is to coincide with my old post about obvious things 80% of drivers tend to fail to do. This time around, however, I think it applies more closely to 90% of drivers. That’s right, nearly every single driver I see is guilty of this.

The first issue- why in the heck do people wait until the last second to move into an off ramp lane or something similar?

To further explain, imagine you are on a highway with multiple lanes. Now imagine your highway to have exits every few miles. Now imagine those exits having their own lanes to exit off of. Yes, most exits you see in real life will eventually have a lane open at least a somewhat short distance right before the exit, and in some cases, at least half a mile.

My gripe is, WHY DO PEOPLE IGNORE THESE LANES!!!!??? I’m being serious. At least 8 out of 10 drivers will ignore this lane when it opens up and stay in the lane next to it. But they slow down a good 20 mph, thus backing up all the traffic in that lane, and/or forcing others to quickly jump into the next lane to the left, thus most likely forcing people already in that lane to hit their brakes, and before long, at a busy time, BAM! Bumper to bumper traffic.

But anyway, these enlightened drivers will suddenly veer off into the exit ramp just as the exit lane ends, or within the last 20-30 feet of a 500 foot lane. Or my favorite one is the people who slowly move over, driving in both lanes for the majority of the time.

I can’t understand why so many people do this. It’s just so baffling to me. When the lane opens up, quit effing around and move over. It’s not difficult, I swear it’s not! Let us people trying to get places do so…for the love of God!! I can’t tell you how many collisions I’ve avoided from being behind someone who stays in the regular lane while I move into the exit lane. I just always assume the idiot in front is eventually going to move over, so instead of moving further up the exit lane, I fall way back, because the guy in the regular lane is surely going to move over at the last second. This almost always happens. If I had continued on at regular speed, these people probably wouldn’t even look and just move right into me, or at least cut me or someone else off.

My second gripe that 90% of drivers are guilty of…waiting until the last second to move out of a lane closed for road work of something of the sorts. You know what I’m talking about, right? When you sit in traffic for 40 minutes because they close one lane on a 4 lane highway?

Depending on the time of day, this will unavoidably cause obscene amounts of traffic. But if people weren’t so god damn stupid, it  wouldn’t build up as quickly, or in slower times, traffic would be avoided all together.

So what am I talking about that could be avoided? THE FACT THAT MOST OF THE TIME THERE ARE SIGNS ALERTING YOU THAT A LANE WILL BE CLOSED!!!!!

Most construction areas or whatever will put up signs that say something along the lines of “Left Lane Closed In Two Miles.” Some will then give a 1 mile warning and half a mile warning.

Now common sense would tell most people to get out of the left lane as soon as you see the sign. 2 miles is plenty of time to move over to the right without having to cut someone off too badly, if at all.

But no…the few intelligent people that do move over is like the greatest gift to all the other idiots out there. The left lane clears up, so tons of people go into the left lane and slam on the gas, turning the highway into a race track, because they just have to get those 3 cars ahead! Then just when they are about to hit the cones closing off the lane, they quickly cut some smarter person off in the right lane, thus causing that entire lane to quickly come to a complete stop. Now once this lane is stopped, you would think people would just line up, knowing that the left lane is closed.

Nope…

All those bad ass morons just keep piling into the left lane, stopping at the cones and pushing their way into the right lane. Dozens of cars do this, and each one just backs up traffic more and more. And chances are these idiots were sitting in traffic before hand. Your own dumb, selfish actions are what are causing the traffic in the first place…you morons!!! And naturally, people in the lane the idiots are forcing their way into are now moving into the other right most lanes, causing traffic in those lanes as well. And what does that make? A parking lot, folks!

So yeah. That’s all I have to say right now.

The point I’m trying to make is if people paid attention, stopped being selfish idiots (as if) and utilized the tools given to them, traffic would be less of an issue and us people who drive a lot could get back a few hours of our lives each week.

Secrets 80% Of Drivers Seemingly Don’t Know

There’s a lot of things everyone sees every day when they are out driving, specifically what other drivers do, or rather what they don’t do. There are some things I personally see so often that I have come to the conclusion that most people just don’t know about these things they can do while driving to improve their own abilities and avoid causing traffic build up. So I am going to be a nice guy and share some tips

Secret #1

Did you know that you can actually press down on the gas pedal when going uphill?

If you never knew this, I suggest trying it out! So many people go up steep hills and just allow themselves to just drop like 20 mph. But if you press down harder on the gas pedal you can avoid this and actually maintain your speed, thus preventing the abysmal traffic so many people have to sit in on every highway that involves hills.

Secret #2

Your car will not flip when going around turns. This is not to say you shouldn’t exercise caution around turns and adjust your speed accordingly depending on what type of vehicle you are driving. But I promise you, unless the turn is EXTREMELY sharp, chances are you will be completely fine.

In other words, you don’t have to drop 10-20 mph for every little curve in the road, you are quite safe, I assure you. A slight dip in speed, like 5 mph tops might be acceptable, but a lot of times, the speed limit will get you through easily. Often faster than the limit is good enough.

It’s all about maintaining your speed. The worst culprits are the idiots who do like 10-15 under most of the time (I have a lot of winding roads) and then when we finally get to a straight away with a passing zone, these guys think they are hot stuff and start doing 10-15 over, but as soon as that passing zone ends 10 seconds later and the slight curves show up again, they are back to being slow idiots.

Now when you combine turns with hills, forget it, people are going to drive 20-25 under the speed limit. Again, in 99% of the cases, you will be fine, either going down or uphill and with or without turns.

Secret #3

Don’t follow too close to the person in front of you, especially on multi-lane highways. I can’t help but laugh at just about everyone tailgating everyone on highways at high speeds, as if they leave more than a car space in front of them, then they are going to be late to wherever they are going.

car line

This too, is simply not the case. Leaving a safe distance around you will make you no later, I swear it. If anything, it will prevent collision if the person in front of you slams on his brakes. You won’t hit them, and the person behind you won’t rear end you.

And even if a collision doesn’t happen, when the person in front of you hits his brakes, you immediately have to hit yours, and then the person behind you has to hit them harder, and this goes on and on with each person in line having to hit their brakes harder and harder, eventually causing traffic to come to a complete stop.

So you see, traffic and collisions are going to slow you down more than distancing yourself from other cars.

And do try to avoid being one of those idiots who squeeze in to that tiny spot in between to cars when shifting lanes, because again, the person you cut in front of has to hit his brakes and we find ourselves in that same crawling situation. I know I am asking a lot of people to be considerate of those behind them, but I must try anyway.

Secret #4

This one isn’t as much of a common problem, but I still experience it quite often.

Don’t turn on your high beams if you can see someone in front of you! No matter how far ahead of you they are, you’re still blinding them. And make sure you have them off when you are around other cars too! Almost every day some doofus has their brights on, blinding everyone. Pay attention, will you!

And that’s all I will generously share today! Please try to follow these secrets now that you have been enlightened!!
