My Top 10 Super Nintendo Games

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System…what a console. This has so many incredible titles on it, it is hard to pick 10 without feeling guilty, but 10 I must choose!

I have 52 games for the wonderful console, and have played 44 of them. So here are the 10 that made it on top!

#10- Donkey Kong Country

dkc_snes_boxart

Rare Ltd./ Nintendo, 1994

I remember the first time I saw this game. It was at my cousin’s house. Just from watching him, I was in awe. Never had a game looked so real or so fun. And when he let me play it, I was even more awestruck. I still get that feeling playing it over 20 years later.

#9- Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble

dkc3_snes_boxart

Rare Ltd./ Nintendo, 1996

This game changed the DKC formula while also keeping it almost exactly the same. You had to find parts in the levels to access new levels, there were many different enemies and allies, and Kranky was playing an N64, which was most awesome. It is easily one of the best platformers out there.

#8- Mega Man X2

mmx2_box

Capcom, 1995

This just takes the brilliance of the first game and expands upon it. Starting off with the dash ability is also fantastic!

#7- Mega Man X3

mmx3_box

Capcom, 1996

This game expands upon it’s predecessor in more ways than anyone would have anticipated. So many new items to collect, the coolest looking armor with some of the best abilities in the series. Oh and Zero…YOU GET TO PLAY AS ZERO!!! This game is just a masterpiece no matter how you slice it.

#6- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

yoshi's_island_(super_mario_world_2)_box_art

Nintendo, 1995

I remember watching the ridiculously awesome commercial where a guy just keeps eating until he explodes. But the game itself is incredible. A completely awesome spinoff from the traditional Mario games, you take control of Yoshi with baby Mario riding you. The concept is amazing and incredibly fun as you go from level to level, playing as different Yoshis, eating bad guys, throwing eggs, and a whole slew of tricks Yoshi could never do before. Yoshi was my favorite character in Super Mario World, and to have him basically get his own game and play as all the Yoshi colors from Super Mario World along with a bunch of new ones was a dream come true.

#5- Illusion of Gaia

iog

Quintet/ Nintendo, 1994

This game is incredible. The gameplay is awesome, especially since you can turn into 3 different people. You learn cool upgrades and powers, the story and character development is exceptional, especially for the time. The use of real world places to tell a fictional story is also amazing. And like all the games on this list so far, it has incredible music.

#4- Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest

dk_country_2

Rare Ltd./ Nintendo, 1995

The gameplay, the music, the character design, the improvements, the way better animal friends, the level design, everything is flawless. I would probably put this in the top 5 greatest platformers to ever exist. Diddy and Dixie are probably my favorite duo of all times.

#3- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

link-to-the-past

Nintendo, 1992

This game does what the original game did. Unleash a massive world crammed with secrets, enemies and items beyond which the world has ever seen. There is so much to do in this game it is insane. I still don’t think I’ve ever found everything. From the first epic minute, to the last, this game just fills you with joy.

#2- Super Metroid

Super_Metroid_box

Intelligent Systems/ Nintendo, 1994

This game showed us what a non linear platformer could be. The game is perfect. The atmosphere, the music, the gameplay, the incredible items and boss fights. It’s all here. I have beaten this game probably around 100 times. I love it dearly.

#1- Super Mario World

Super_Mario_World_Coverart

Nintendo, 1991

As far as I’m concerned, the first game out on the system is also the best. This game is huge. Every level is packed with all sorts of fun things to keep you busy for hours. All the addicting items, the countless hidden pathways that take you through a diverse and clever world map, the ridiculous changes beating the Star Road ensue, the game is just perfect and has kept me entertained for nearly 30 years.

Well there you have it, 10 of the best games ever made, all from one of the best consoles ever made.

My Top 10 GameCube Games

GameCube is my favorite console of all time at the moment. It hads a diverse, fantastic library of games, some new adaptive abilities with the GBA, and the most comfortable controller ever made. But it’s really all about the games, so let’s see the 10 best in my opinion. It was hard to narrow it down, for of the 39 games I have gotten around to playing out of the 46 I own for the system, they were pretty much all phenomenal.

#10

Super_Mario_SunshineSuper Mario Sunshine

Nintendo

2002

This took the Mario franchise into a whole new territory, and I’ve got to say, it is quite creative and unique, making it fun to play at anytime. Shooting stuff with a waterpack while performing amazingly acrobatic jumps is just so much fun.

#9

Star_Fox_Adventures_GCN_Game_BoxStar Fox Adventures

Rare Ltd./ Nintendo

2002

This is another complete twist of a massive Nintendo franchise, and by far my favorite in the Star Fox series. It resembles more of a Zelda game, with some space battles. But finding items, solving puzzles and beating the heck out of dinosaurs is super fun whether you play as Link or Fox, or really anyone else for that matter.

#8

wwThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Nintendo

2003

Turns out Zelda still does the genre better than Star Fox. But nevertheless, this game took a unique twist as well on it’s franchise, though not as much as the #9 & 10 spots. Using a gorgeous, new graphic style, flooding the kingdom we’ve saved countless times and introducing an interesting new story of sorts, this was one gripping game, though it does have a few rather annoying flaws. But even so, this is one great game.

#7

super_smash_bros_melee_box_artSuper Smash Bros. Melee

HAL Labs/ Nintendo

2001

Hoo boy, I easily put 1000 hours into this game with my friends and family. This took everything amazing about the first game and doubled it. There are so many modes to play, double the characters and probably even more stages. The most fun part was trying to unlock all the characters and stages. But once you did, it was nothing but 4 on 4 all out melee, and it never gets old. It doesn’t hold up all that well today, but that doesn’t stop me from going back to it every so often.

#6

Metroidprime2echoes

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Retro Studios/ Nintendo

2004

This dark and atmospheric game differed quite a bit from it’s prequel, and really, from the rest of the Metroid franchise. It is slightly more story driven and is the first game to feature a whole bunch of new items for Samus to acquire. The deadly double sided world is also very different and cool. Great game.

#5

Sonic_adv_2_battle_box

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Sonic Team/ Sega

2002

This is another game that I put more hours than I care to know in. Thanks to the addicting Chao Gardens, and the incredibly fun and diverse/cleverly designed missions, with special medals to earn in each one, the replay value in this game is enormous. After probably well over 100 hours or so, I still have so much left to do in the game. Though it has been a while since I played it. (Pesky backlog).

#4

viewtiful_joe_p_cdj0m7Viewtiful Joe

Clover Studio/ Capcom

2003

This is another from out of nowhere classic. Completely unique gameplay mixed into an equally unique and bizarre storyline, with a bunch of unlockables makes this challenging game just truly wonderful. The humor is great as well. One of my favorite games of all time.

#3

twilight-princessThe Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Nintendo

2006

One of the last games to come out for GameCube was one of it’s best, and one of the best in the Zelda series. The gloomy graphical style fit the atmosphere of the game so well. A darker, interesting story with new characters and some brand new gameplay mechanics make this one to remember. This also has the best dungeons in the series as well, having deviated a bit from the usual formula.

#2

MetroidPrimeboxMetroid Prime

Retro Studios/ Nintendo

2002

2002 must have been the year for Nintendo to take their big franchises and flip them on their heads. Here is another drastic change to formula. An intense action side scroller became a dark, atmospheric first person shooter that was done so well, it feels to be a logical step in the direction of the series. This game is just perfect. The gameplay, the music, the level design, the enemy design, everything…just absolutely amazing. Easily one of the best games ever made.

And here we are, the best game to ever grace the GameCube!!!

#1

paper mario tydPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Intelligent Systems/ Nintendo

2004

This game is a master piece. Each area you visit is so unique and interesting, making it fun and exciting to explore. The gameplay is fantastic, using the same mechanics from the first game, but tweaked a bit. And what’s more, every single character in the game…I mean EVERY one, even the ones you just pass by, are so interesting and fun to watch or interact with. The large amount of party members and the special attacks are all so cool. The story is highly entertaining and fun to follow as well. It…it’s just so good. Like…I don’t know. It makes me feel like I am in the game, adventuring with Mario in all his papery glory. It is one of the few games where I became legitimately sad when I reached the half way point to beating it, but felt completely and wholly satisfied when I beat it, though I could just restart the game over and over again after beating it, it’s that much fun. But luckily, there is some challenging end game stuff to do to keep me preoccupied.

Great game…sniff.

So there you have it, the 10 best games on a console full of even more. Each one of these games filled me with a joyful spirit that I will carry with me forever.

The Console Wars: The Ultimate Winner

Well I can’t think of anything fun to make a console war about, so I guess it is finally time to end my Console War series. Today I will be simply adding up all the place numbers for each console throughout every one of my posts in the series. Then I will rank them from highest number to lowest number, the lowest number meaning the best ranked sum. So like golf basically.

This is no game, this will really see what is the greatest console of all time, as far as being ranked by abstract things are concerned anyway.  I will be writing a number after each console name. This number reflects its total score from all the other wars I’ve done.Well here they are, the 22 biggest consoles ever made, in ranking order from worst to best.

It’s name ranked 21st, controller 20th, appearance 18th, game 20th and price 1st. Let’s hear it for the lowest priced console! That is something this one should be proud of!

The next two consoles are tied. I will instead choose their rankings by how many top 10 appearances they’ve had, the one with more getting a better spot on this list obviously.

#14 PlayStation 2-60

Best Rank-7th

Worst Rank-15th

Following right after its big brother, the PS2’s name ranked 12th, controller 11th, appearance 15th, game 7th and price 15th.

Sony’s latest console’s total score breaks the close 1 point difference cycle that seemed to develop for the last few consoles. It’s name ranked 20th, controller 5th, appearance 8th, game 3rd and price 19th.

The next three consoles are tied. I ranked them by most top 10 appearances.

#11 Sega Genesis-54

Top 10 Appearances-2

Best Rank-2nd

Worst Rank-18th

Sega’s second console is the third to appear on the list so far. It only beat the next ranked console in two wars out of the five, which is why it is the worst ranked out of the three. It’s name ranked 5th, controller 18th, appearance 12th, game 17th, and price 2nd.

#10 PlayStation 3-54

Top 10 Appearances-3 (Appearance Champion)

#6 Nintendo Switch-47

Top 10 Appearances-2

Best Rank-3rd

Worst Rank-13th

Image result for nintendo switch

Pretty darn good for a console that isn’t even out yet. This tied with the next two consoles, but had the least amount of top 10 appearances, thus the lowest rank. It’s name ranked 11th, controller 3rd, appearance 9th, game 11th, and price 13th.
